Cinetopia Filmmakers Join the Festival to Discuss Their Work
An amazing array of directors, actors, producers and film critics to take part in screenings and panels over the 10 day festival

Film festivals involve more than simply presenting great films, something Cinetopia Film Festival proves with a great lineup of screenwriters, directors and actors to this year’s festival, taking place June 3-12.  In addition to welcoming renowned film critic LEONARD MALTIN and award-winning Disney animator ANDREAS DEJA to discuss the works of the Walt Disney Studios, Cinetopia welcomes these talented filmmakers to the stage:

HUNKY DORY: DIrector/screenwriter/producer MICHAEL CURTIS JOHNSON (an Eastern Michigan University alum) and screenwriter/producer/lead actor TOMAS PAIS will take part in post-film discussions following all the festival screenings of the film.

BLACK MOUNTAIN POETS:  Executive producer JON RENNIE will participate in post-film discussions following all the festival screenings of the film. 

SEMBENE!  Director/producer JASON SILVERMAN (a University of Michigan alum) will take part in a live Q&A following the opening night June 3 screening of the documentary, as well as a post-film moderated Q&A via Skype following the Friday, June 10 screening.

SUITED:  RAE TUTERA, the onscreen subject of the film and co-founder of Bindle & Keep Clothiers, will take part in a Q&A following the opening night June 3 screening and DANIEL FRIEDMAN, onscreen subject and co-founder of Bindle & Keep Clothiers, will take part in a Q&A following screenings on June 8 and 9, and 11.

THE ALCHEMIST COOKBOOK:  Director/screenwriter (and Grand Rapids native) JOEL POTRYKUS will take part in post-film discussion following the opening night June 3, along with cast and crew, and Joel himself will participate in a discussion following the June 8 screening of the film.

TYRUS Director PAMELA TOM will be on hand for a post-film discussion at the June 4 screening of this documentary.

HOME CARE:  Director and screenwriter SLÁVEK HORÁK will discuss his award-winning feature moderated live via Skype from Prague following the June 4 and June 10 screenings of the film.

MISS STEVENS:  Director/screenwriter JULIA HART and screenwriter/producer JORDAN HOROWITZ will take part in a post-film Q&A for both the June 4 and 5 screenings of the film.

UNCLE HOWARDAARON BROOKNER, the director, onscreen subject and nephew of the film’s subject, Howard Brookner, will take part in a live Q&A following the June 5 screening and Aaron will also take part in a post-film moderated Q&A via Skype following the Saturday, June 11 screening.

AS I OPEN MY EYES: Director and screenwriter LEYLA BOUZID will discuss her award-winning feature moderated live via Skype from Tunisia following the June 7 and June 10 screenings of the film.

PRESENTING PRINCESS SHAW:  The onscreen subject, SAMANTHA MONTGOMERY (a.k.a. Princess Shaw), will take part in a post-film moderated Q&A following the June 8 screening of the film.

OPERATOR:  Director/screenwriter LOGAN KIBENS, screenwriter/producer SHARON GREENE, and the film’s lead actor MARTIN STARR will all take part in post-film discussions at the June 9, 11 and 12 screenings of this film.

HOLY HELL: Director and onscreen subject WILL ALLEN and producer TRACEY HARNISH will discuss their documentary with a post-film moderated Q&A live via Skype on June 4 and also join us in person for a Q&A following the June 10 screening of the film.

SHAKE THE DUST: Director and photographer ADAM SJÖBERG will take part in a post-film Q&A following the June 11 screening of the film.

LITTLE MEN: Lead actor THEO TAPLITZ will take part in a post-film Q&A following the June 11 and June 12 screenings of the film.

Cinetopia passes are on cinetopiafestival.org and include Festival Passes (offering unlimited film screenings, priority admission, opening night parties and other hospitality events), Movie Passes (unlimited film screenings and priority admission) and a Student Passes for those with valid student identification (unlimited film screenings). 

Tickets to individual films are $12 for the general public, while members of the Arab American National Museum, Cinema Detroit, DIA, Charles H. Wright Museum, The Henry Ford, and Michigan Theater can purchase tickets at the member price of $9.  All tickets can be purchased at cinetopiafestival.org.

The Trip Metal Fest taking place this Memorial weekend at various Detroit venues is featuring electronic music in all its different forms: experimental, industrial, funk, punk, techno and more.

The events seeks to establish Detroit as a place to see unique music happenings and maintain the city’s long-standing status as the birthplace of revolutionary music genres.

Curated by Wolf Eyes' Nate Young, the festival will feature performances from Wolf Eyes, a collaborative performance from Andrew W.K. and Young, synth pioneer Morton Subotnick, Hieroglyphic Being with Marshall Allen & Danny Ray Thompson of the Sun Ra Arkestra, and more.

There will also be film screenings at Third Man Records, two "Everything Is Terrible!" shows at Cinema Detroit, a long-distance conversation with composer Pauline Oliveros, and more.
