Show Review – Bleached & No Parents at The Loving Touch April 2016

With the announcement last Thursday of Prince’s death it was certainly a day marked with sadness and memories of the exceptional artist. But, moreover,  with an announcement as heavy as this one, it was a day to be social. To get lost in a crowd with the aid of music blaring loud enough to block the mind from misery and stimulate the feet. Bleached along with No Parents brought all this and more to the Loving Touch with a high energy performance of raw, melodic punk.
No Parents

No Parents from California kicked the show off with a batch of fast punk that may not have left much a of mark on the early, subdued crowd but it was still a fun enough start for things to come.

As the crowd multiplied, Bleached took the stage with a fury of sweet and sassy guitar, bass and drums. Pulling most the songs from their latest album “Welcome the Worms,” Bleached played with a wild abandon that had the singer and bass player joining the crowd for a dance and careening across the stage oblivious to cords and mic stands. While their songs have the rawness of punk, they are also laced with a syrupy pop goodness. Standout moments from their set included a joyous cover of the Ramones “Today Your Love, Tomorrow the world” and their own “Sour Candy.”
Bleached 4-21-2016

I won’t lie, it took some extra energy for me to make it out to the show, but Bleached easily repaid it back with dividends.

Thrival Innovation + Music Festival - Another festival worth a road trip!

Thrival Innovation + Music Festival Showcases Pittsburgh’s Creative and Tech Boom September 20-24, 2016.

First Music Lineup: CHVRCHES, Thievery Corporation, Metric, Lettuce, and more.

Besides making the trek out to Moogfest in a couple weeks, I've also added the Thrival Innovation  + Music Festival to my MCB road trippin' experiences for 2016.
Launched in 2013 by Pittsburgh-based nonprofit Thrill Mill, Inc., Pittsburgh’s Thrival Innovation + Music Festival is an annual week long event that showcases the former industrial juggernaut’s resurgence as a dynamic tech and creative hub.

Running September 20-24, the festival features multiple days of immersive, innovation-focused programming, capped by a diverse two-day outdoor live music experience with world renowned talent. Thrival musical headliners include CHVRCHESThievery Corporation,Metric, and Lettuce with additional acts to be announced. Former headliners include Panic! At the Disco, RJD2, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, Wale, Moby, Portugal. The Man, and more.

Thrival Innovation programs will explore three themes: AuthentiCityThe Ripple Effect, andLost and Found.

AuthentiCIty speaks to the complexities of Pittsburgh’s rising status as one of the most livable cities in the U.S., as well as America’s top food town and other accolades.

Thrival executive producer, Dan Law, explains, “Recently, Pittsburgh finds itself on a number of ‘top’ lists, but so much of our city remains undiscovered to a broader audience. The festival offers that unique opportunity to witness why Pittsburgh is a modern comeback story.”

The city’s tech boom has been a driving force in its comeback narrative attracting industry stalwarts like GoogleAppleFacebook, and Uber. However, Thrival’s Ripple Effect theme also explores the smaller ideas that eventually lead to big impacts emerging outside of the tech giants’ umbrellas — particularly within the realm of startups and entrepreneurship.

The festival’s third theme, Lost and Found is an examination of rediscovered industries and skill sets that are shaping our modern economy — a theme embodied by the landmark venue anchoring the weekend music experience, the Carrie Furnaces. This national historic landmark was once a part of the historic Homestead Steel Works.
For limited time tickets for the music festival early bird tickets are only $49, get them here!

COMING UP / WIN TICKETS! DBS HYBRID II: Sonya Belaya & "Crazy" James Baljo [piano vs. electric guitar]

TUESDAY, APRIL 19TH AT 7PM >>

Sonya Belaya (piano) and "Crazy" James Baljo (electric guitar) @ the Ecumenical Theological Seminary (fka First Presbyterian)

Two monolithic solo traditions come together for a unique sonic experience; the classical piano, and the all-American electric guitar. "Crazy" James Baljo, known as guitarist for Wolf Eyes, is an unmistakable force on the stage, sounding somewhere between Jimmy Hendrix and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He claims ownership of each improvised moment, a riotous demeanor matching the gritty uproar from his guitar. Another sonic force is Sonya Belaya, the phenomenal pianist hailing from Ann Arbor. Sonya and the piano seem to be adjoined when she plays - a very special presence, truly captivating and expressive in her renditions of Classical and Contemporary music. Our second HYBRID concert: shredding of strings and keys.

Tickets: $10 online (until day before), $15 at the door

While he is healthy otherwise, and a non-drinker nor does liver disease run in his family. He is considered stage 4 as the tumor has spread outside of the liver. He had undergone chemo and was in the operation room for major surgery when it was decided, last minute, that he was not a candidate for surgery at that time. This was devastating news for the family. He is currently back in chemo. PHOTOS: Escort at The Loving Touch

NYC-based Escort rounded out 3 back-to-back midwest dates on Friday night at The Loving Touch.  The show was energetic and electric from start to finish.  An exuberant crowd drew in closer and closer to the stage as the night went on, while front-woman Adeline Michèle let us know a few times that she felt like she was "here partying with friends".  It did feel that way as all of us moved and revered together to hits we loved from the first album and a slew of favorites from their sophomore album "Animal Nature" released this past fall.

"Animal Nature" stays true to the tradition of clublands holy trinity - New York, Chicago and Detroit - while staying on the forefront of modern disco and a new era of not-so- underground dance music. In an age where the dance music is over saturated with countless producers churning out an endless stream beats and remixes, Escort stands out, in part, by creating dance music the old fashioned way: with impeccable production, musicianship, and songwriting.
Escort also brings their uncompromising approach to the stage. In an era where dance music is dominated by samples and computers, Escort has developed a reputation as one of the premiere live dance acts, capable of performing their elaborate recordings note for note. Including their renowned single "Cocaine Blues", a loose reinterpretation of the 1976 Dillinger classic that received rave reviews and quickly became an underground sensation.

The night ended with a medley of classics including crowd favorite, and Detroit anthem, Inner City's "Good Life".  And, yes, that was a short interpretation of Lil Louis' "French Kiss" that followed...sadly Adeline did not do "that part"!
