UPCOMING: Jerry Vile: The Secret of Life...Revealed! 19 May

I love it when someone doubly-convinces me to do something I was already going to do. Jerry Vile really has been -- well, more than a fixture, an integral working part of Detroit arts and culture since before I've been cognizant of the fact that Detroit has arts and culture. One of my prized display pieces is a small Jerry Vile I bought the night someone tried to carjack me. Ahh, memories...

Jerry Vile's "The Secret Of Life...Revealed" Art Spectacular
One Night Only
Saturday, May 19th 7pm-10pm

Bankle Fine Arts Building
2944 Woodward, Detroit, MI
$5.00 Art Viewing fee (No Freeloaders)

I am writing this not only because I am a friend of Jerry Vile's, but also more importantly I needed to write this - because Jerry Vile (or whatever name he is using) is usually his OWN WORST ENEMY.

Yes he is doing an art show- and from what I've seen of the work, it puts him in an entire new light. That and the flyer is pretty clever too.
-Rick Manore

A List of why Jerry Vile will NEVER make it or it could be WHY HE SHOULD MAKE IT.

- He refused to let me find him a gallery (being sort of influential in that way) No, he insisted on a one night show - at the Bankle no less.

- Charging an "art viewing fee" of $5 is not unheard of, but probably because of the cost of the so-called "complimentary" shrimp and that STUPID shrimp cocktail dress code thing too.

- Crediting his assistants on the work. (Warhol is spinning 120 RPMs)

- His making fun of art and artists and the art world in general - pretentious unveilings, using the term, artiste when referring to himself.

- His policy of refusing to sign some pieces unless the buyer cooks him dinner.

- What is he going to do this time? It's been true of his bands (notably the Boners), his publications (Orbit, Fun, White Noise) and his events (primarily the Dirty Show) The element of surprise has always been Vile's métier- whether stupefying audiences as The Flying Nun (complete with wires and flying) with his 1980s Punk theatrical band, The Boners- or his decade long running Pop-Cult Infotainment rag, his monthly Orbit, which not only surprised- but incurred some colorful lawsuits as well.

- Vile likes to get a rise out of people. Shocks them. Makes them laugh, tricks them, and most of all, he surprises them. Count on "The Secret Of Life Revealed" to probably unlock a secret or two about life - though it may not be what you were expecting- or hoping to see. Either way, you won't forget it.

So, is it delusional behavior, or prescient genius?
You make the call.

Love him or hate him, Jerry Vile is undeniably one of the cleverest people to come out of this city, and his lengthy resume is a testament to his cultural importance. And given his history, if he were a resident of either coast, he would likely be a star by this time. More than once I have credited him with being "The most important figure in Detroit sub culture of the last 25 plus years" and I still stand by it.

Hell, even Wayne State University Publishing is commemorating Jerry's Orbit years with a coffee table tome, venerating the magazine that was Jerry's Pop Art canvas for 10 years. Mixing humor with the truth and a whole lot of exaggeration, Orbit was legendary in making the whole scene in the 1990's- look important.

He is doing just what he has always done- however this time it is on the walls - floors and probably the ceilings of a gallery.

THIS IS LIKE NOTHING ANY ARTIST IN DETROIT HAS ATTEMPTED.

And if he pulls off a fraction of some of his ideas here... God help us.

Vile has done art shows before; usually painting, computer art and photographs. The difference this time is his focus is on art (and he is NEVER focused). His other shows have been part time- this one he's taking very seriously (whatever that entails in Jerry's world).

In the past he has built miniature versions of the Bohemian Hall and CPop Gallery and then filled them with vermin (live rats in this case). Accompanying his paintings were writings about each one that were as the painting themselves, weird, and usually hilarious, it was like walking around the inside an Orbit magazine. Will the Bankle be his next Skinner's Box Of Contemporary Art spaces?

At the last Dirty Show he did three pieces (one uncredited) and were considered the best of show by the majority of patrons, although they were almost evenly divided on which piece they liked more.

It was upon seeing this that I realized that Vile might be something more than an artist whose work I liked; I was viewing an artist who was doing work... that dare I say, was important. Now that he credited himself, I understood what makes the Dirty Show so unique rather than just a bunch of erotic pictures on the wall is it is simply an extension of Vile himself.

You can say a lot of bad things about him but you can't call him - BORING.

His paintings are fun, but it is this new contemporary work that is what sets him apart from his past. He's working with video, sculpture, dioramas, and of course performance art (or stand-up comedy that hangs on a wall). Because EVERYTHING Vile does and has done is performance art, even if he doesn't know it.

While he may not be the best painter in Detroit, he just may be its best artist. His humor can be stupid- but it can also be profound. He may shock in his incisive social commentary. Remember that only a minimum amount of what he does is erotic when it comes to his own work.

So don't laugh, we just may have the next Dean Koons, Damian Hirst, or Banksy right in our midst.
Why? Because it's not just an exhibit- it's an art spectacular.

Eleanor Friedberger at the Magic Bag

Eleanor Friedberger
w/ Hospitality
Thursday, May 3rd, at The Magic Bag
$12, Doors at 8

Who is Eleanor Friedberger? Friedberger is previously known for her work in Chicago power-pop harmonie-music The Fiery Furnaces, a band she created with her brother Matthew at the turn of the millennium. They’re too modest to mention that they’ve won a number of awards, sold out happenings the world over and made nine albums, most recently Take Me Round Again, a collection of cover songs from their previous album. That experience, combined with the fact that The Fiery Furnaces aren’t breaking up, inspired her to make her first solo record, Last Summer, last summer.

In the music, you will hear the casual confrontation of the most emotionally direct Fiery Furnaces songs, plus a lot of snap, crackle and pop. In fact, in these songs made of memories, you will hear the future. Sparks, Donovan, Procol Harum, Kath Bloom, Lô Borges and Todd Rundgren too. Friedberger’s phrasing is as good as anyone’s; even better, when the line’s over and most other singers would leave it right there, she’ll throw in an unnecessary extra syllable—a “yuh” or an “er,” even an “oh oh.” It’s like she hates silence. “Eleanor Friedberger’s music improves on silence”: there’s your headline.

With Last Summer, Eleanor Friedberger may well be telling us about last summer, or various last summers, or even—WATCH OUT!—the last summer there will ever be. . . One thing is certain: she’s playing a long game. Welcome to Level One.

FREE TICKETS & CD: Walter Trout's "Blues For The Modern Daze" - Callahans Auburn Hills -

MCB has a pair of tickets and signed CD ready to roll to one lucky winner
email motorcityblog@earthlink.net for you chance to win and get to this show!

April 24th, marks the release date for contemporary guitar legend Walter Trout's passionate new album Blues for the Modern Daze. His 21st studio album, Blues for the Modern Daze returns Trout to his blues roots and finds his songwriting at a creative and personal zenith. The album, released through Provogue Records/Mascot/MRI, is currently streaming in full as part of MSN Music's Listening Booth series, and you can also check out the lyric video for the first single, "Lonely."

"I thought it would be exciting to make a blues album now," Trout explains. "I liked the idea of capturing the energy of my touring band playing live in the studio, and in terms of subject matter, the state of the world is perfect for writing blues songs."

Trout spent five years in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and was a member of Canned Heat, two supremely influential blues rock bands. He's also supported a slew of classic artists including John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton and Joe Tex. As a front man the six-string virtuoso developed a reputation for tornado-strength live shows that led famed BBC disc jockey Bob Harris to call him "the world's greatest rock guitarist" in his influential book The Whispering Years and won Trout the sixth spot on BBC Radio One's list of the Top 20 guitarists of all time.

Blues for the Modern Daze was recorded at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood, California, with Trout and engineer Eric Corne producing. It's the fifth time Trout has collaborated with Corne, who contributed to the arrangements and sonic palette of the songs that Trout wrote and demoed on acoustic guitar during the year before the sessions.

"Not only does Blues for the Modern Daze capture my interest in exploring a side of my music that's rooted in my first musical love, it reveals something about me, too," he explains. "It sums up the thoughts and attitudes of somebody who is getting a little older and is feeling a little like he's a part of another era, with different values and a different perspective on life than often seem to be prevalent today. And I stand behind those values, like compassion, authenticity and honesty, as strongly as I stand behind my music."

Walter Trout's tour kicks off later this week in Solana Beach, CA, and continues through September. Dates can be found below.

HATCHBACK 6 - April 28th through May 26th 2012

New gallery opens with exhibition of 48 artists

Hamtramck has a new venue for art. For the past five years, Hatch has
hosted an annual juried art exhibition at Café 1923, an independent coffee
house.

This year, Hatchback 6 will be in a building that used to serve as a police
station and a home for nuns.

In 2008, Hatch purchased Hamtramck's former police station for one dollar.
It has worked for four years to convert the building into an art center,
which will feature low-cost studios, a workshop with a darkroom, a printing
press and a kiln, a classroom, a gift shop of locally made goods and a
gallery.

Hatchback 6, an annual juried exhibition, will open Saturday, April 28.
Gilda Snowden, a well-respected Detroit artist and College of Creative
Studies professor, served as juror, selecting nearly 70 artworks from an
open call for submissions. Among the 48 artists are Topher Crowder, Jack
Summers, Laura Macintyre, and Marianne Burrows, who will be opening her own
gallery and artists studios in Hamtramck soon.

"The Detroit area is full of possibilities," said Christopher Schneider,
founder and president of Hatch. "Artists are snapping up opportunities and
are doing a number of exciting things. Hatch is a prime example."

Hatchback 6 runs from April 28 to May 26. The opening is Saturday, April 28
from 5 pm to 9 pm, and will feature a modern dance performance created by
James Cornish and music by Todd Luneack. The gallery, located at 3456
Evaline, will be open each Saturday from 1 pm to 8 pm or by appointment.

Each Saturday during the exhibition Hatch will have artist panels from 6 pm
to 7 pm to discuss their work, followed by a live band from 7 pm to 8 pm.

All events are free and open to the public.

The schedule is as follows:

May 5th: The Space Band

May 12th: Team Marshall

May 19th: The He-Bops

May 26th: Mother Whale

Hatch is still raising money to complete further needed renovation. "We
have put hundreds of hours of sweat equity into the building," said
Schneider. "We have also used donations and grants to replace the roof, fix
the electrical and plumbing, and repurpose the interior. The gallery and
studios are essentially complete. Now we need to replace the furnace and
complete fixing up the workshop and classroom."

Hatch is trying to raise $5000 through a Kickstarter grant online. Search
for "Hatch" at www.kickstarter.com.

Contributors receive art from Hatch members as an incentive.

Starting in 2006, HATCH began coordinating an ongoing series of exhibits by
area creatives at the newly-opened Café 1923, a coffeehouse in a historic
building across the street from Hamtramck's iconic Kowalski meat plant. The
group participates in numerous festivals including the People's Art Festival
at the Russell Industrial Complex, Art Detroit Now, Dally in the Alley, the
Shadow Art Fair in Ypsilanti, the Detroit Urban Craft Fair, the Hamtramck
Labor Day Festival and the Hamtramck International Bazaar. Musical events,
gallery crawls, community educational workshops, artist trading card
exchanges, book discussions and more round out the group's schedule.

Greg Fadell/ "Nothingness"/ Re:View Gallery/ Opening April 28

Who- Greg Fadell

What- Nothingness

Where- Re:V1ew Gallery- Midtwon Detroit

When- Opening reception Saturday, April 28th 2012 - 7pm 10pm

Re:View Gallery is pleased to present new works by Greg Fadell in his first solo exhibit entitled Nothingness.

In this body of work, Fadellas large black and white canvases serve as a container for both his physical painting process and his liberating mental exploration of nothing.  With self-created brushes and water based paint formulas, Fadell successfully achieves a push-pull experience using only black and white layers of gesture.  The contrasting tonalities draw the viewer in with a perceived sense of depth. However, upon closer investigation, there is not the expected thick build up of paint, but rather a thin film that deceptively resembles a photographic print a literal flatness of surface. This duality of depth and flatness provides a unique visual dialog each and every time the viewer engages with the paintings.

Fadell's work resists signifiers, concrete function, or imposed meaning it arises from a genuine connection with the profound experience of creativity. In Nothingness, he constructs a space for the viewer, one that is empty of distractions and the meaningless discourse of everyday life, a space where one can be immersed in the infinite possibilities of nothing.

Greg Fadell was one third of the legendary 1990s art collective, AWOL. Fadell, a U of M Film School Graduate and Professional Skateboarder has always been a study in contrasts. AWOL was a perfect vehicle for  agitprop with a decidedly Detroit bent as they mixed and mashed up contemporary culture in a blenderizer of Film, Early Digital Technology and rapier wit, AWOL influenced everything from local artists to national Ad Agencies.

Fadell's brilliant use of limitation, has plenty to say about abstract expressionism, conceptual content and the art hegemony which makes these decisions as to what is important and what isnt, all in fluidly controlled black and white. If Mark Rothko had born a Skate Punk- He would be Greg Fadell

Just recently got back up North after driving my parents back from Florida.  Not the best way to spent a vacation but one does what one needs to do for their parents.  I did manage to get some free time for myself so here are some cool places to stop at if driving between Florida and New York/Michigan.  The fun of course started in the airport.  I have noticed more cool stuff in airports in recent flying.  Flint, MI has an old car and some area museum displays while Phoenix has various art displays.  Rochester, NY has a couple of old planes and a tree made of brass worth $100, 000 and Orlando has Disney displays, etc like the picture below.

In Florida, I found myself basically around the pool despite being a little chilly though I did get a chance to go to my favorite shopping area, Old Town.  It is basically a strip mall area with shops on both sides of a brick street.  They have everything from an arcade, nostalgia stores and specialty shops.  They also have good restaurants and various rides like a zip line and bungee cords.  Every weekend they have some nice old cars that come through and I got a few pictures.  It is a really cool place to hang out and one of my favorite unique shopping areas I have been to in my travels around the US.

Upon leaving Florida, the first two nights were spent in areas with nothing really close by to see though it was some nice driving on route 441 through Dublin, GA and later route 77 to Lincolnton, NC (which has a cool used book store next to the City Hall).  By the time we reached Staunton, VA via route 81 my father was feeling a bit better as we ate in a cool diner called Ms Rowe's which specializes in great home cooking and some awesome desserts.  The pies are made fresh daily and are heavenly.  Staunton is also the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson so I had to stop by his birthplace and museum.  The red house is where he was born and spent the first year of his life before his parents moved to Atlanta.  He was born in the first floor room on your left.

They are currently showing a great exhibit dedicated to the WWII in the basement exhibit and I enjoyed seeing his 1919 Pierce Arrow.  Wilson was the first president to join AAA and another cool fact is he is the only President to actually earn a PHD (not one of those honorary ones most Presidents get, he actually did the work).  What is it that makes old houses seem even cooler when a famous person, esp a President, has lived there?

They also have a Frontier Culture Museum which is interesting if you have kids.  I was a bit bored walking though and I was going though overly quick due to time constraints.  I would have liked to have spent more time taking my time on the grounds which would have probably made it more fun.  The school kids seemed to really being enjoying themselves as they were walking around the grounds.  They have a bunch of old homesteads from the different parts of the world including homes brought over from Ireland (like the blacksmith shop pictured below with the guy making actual nails),

England and Germany.  They have a mock up of an African village and are building an Native American village to open this year.  They also have some nice old American homesteads.  Each house has someone to talk about the history of the house you are visiting (as well as some native livestock ranging from cows to chickens) and the last house I went through had the guys hanging out playing some period music.

Downtown Staunton also has a a antique fire truck on display at the firehouse, a small old car collection open weekends, a camera museum and some nice dining. Don't forget the many trains that run past the town and the hotel we stayed at.

From Staunton, we went North on route 15 and stayed in Williamsport, PA, home to the Little League Worlds Series.  It is a nice town to visit though not many rooms due to all the workers from the frakking business in the area.  If you stay in the town be prepared to spend a bit more for a room if staying in the town.  While there, I did check out a cool art exhibit on the Penn College campus dedicated to digital space art.  I would recommend it but the show ended the day after I was there.  I also checked out the Thomas T Taber Museum which focuses on the history of the town looking at the logging industry, Native Americans, a war memorial for town veterans, etc.

It is a nice place to browse but make sure you give yourself at least 2 hours to do it justice.  One thing I have noticed in most museums in this country is that they almost always have a piece of Michigan in them.  Most area historical museums whether in Syracuse, NY or anyplace else usually have at least 1 vintage car and that car is almost always a Ford from Detroit like this 1919 beauty.

The real gem of the museum is in the basement for the Shempp Toy Train Collection which is very impressive.  The collection houses over 300 of his trains with a number of rare or one of a kind.  I have seen many train collections over the years including the Lionel Museum in Detroit and this is perhaps the finest I have set my eyes on.  It is worth the visit to the museum all by itself.

That is a brief overview of some of the fun things I saw on the trip and if I was traveling by myself, you know I would have stopped at many more area attractions.  After all, I'm the guy you drove from Detroit to Mackinaw in 11 hours after all my stops.  Most of these things I came up with on the spur of the moment from the hotel lobbies but there are some great things to see across this country (as well as many rip offs) but I think the journey is very important.  One should make time to find unique restaurants like Ship II Shore in Douglas, GA or Ms Rowe's in Staunton instead of the popular chain restaurants.  I can eat at Applebees or Fridays here in NY or back in Detroit so give me something different while on the road.  And give me something interesting and maybe educational like a Presidents house (everyone should visit at least one), an old time village (the Henry Ford Museum is the best) or a local history museum (there are so many cool smalltime museums of this type around (they don't all have to be the Smithsonian).  Heck even seeing something like the oldest steel bridge in VA can be mildly entertaining.

So get out and do a road trip somewhere even if just around the Detroit area whether it be the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, MI, Stones and Bones Museum in Sarnia, ON, the many on-campus museums at Michigan University in Ann Arbor or even just the ice cream parlor in Hell, MI.  Just get out and do something fun this summer.

This Weekend Is Motor City Nightmares

I've been to Motor City Nightmares the past couple years and for me it's always been a scary good time. Last year I hung out with Kyle Gass from Tenacious D. This year's guests include Tony Todd who was recently seen on Chuck but is best known as Candyman and Sid Haig from the Devil's Rejects and several hundred other horror movies. There's several more guests, vendors selling all sorts of horror related merchandise and your chance to see several local short and full length horror movies. There's plenty to do their the entire weekend. Hours are Friday 5pm -10pm, Saturday 10am -7pm and Sunday 11am - 5pm at the Sheraton Detroit Novi.

Here's a podcast I did last year featuring material form last year's MCN:

Show Review: Felix Da Housecat & Anthony Atalla Bleu Detroit Apr. 20

On a day with a series of mishaps it only made sense that I would drive out to Boss Club in a worked up frenzy to see Felix Da Housecat, only to find a barren parking lot. Retaining my “last to know” status, my friend and I quickly scoured our cellphone internet apps to see what happened to the show. After a few minutes of “where the hell is Felix playing” we found out the concert was at the last minute moved to Bleu Detroit, due to a facility problem at Boss Club.

The change in venue was maybe a blessing in disguise as Bleu is a small but comfortable club that already had a fine night planned with Anthony Atalla DJing, so, Felix was the icing on the cake. The night was packed with a well-dressed crowd showing high spirits on the dance floor. Also on high risers were dancers adding some appealing sights to the already impressive night.

Anthony Atalla’s set was a fast moving barrage of percussive house, with several moments of hands in the air and cheers as his set progressed. As the night was running a bit late, we had some thoughts about cutting out before Felix Da Housecat but decided to at least see the beginning of his set. Felix took to the laptop and boards a little after 1am and played a set of eclectic and aggressive dance music, the crowd got an influx of renewed energy and while the space to move was small, everyone was making the most of it.
Felix manages to avoid all the current clichés attached to electronic music and play his own brand of music that pulls out early acid house, electro, even 70’s and 80’s hits, all weaved together in a frantic mix. Several parts of his show were culled from his latest release “Burn the Disco,” Felix remains one of those rare DJ artists to release high quality original material year after year, never slowing down or repeating himself. After 2am with weary eyes and weak legs we left the night knowing there’d be hell to pay the next day, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Be sure to check out upcoming shows brought to you by Nabil Presents, whatever the location.
