Wild At Heart

Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend. I didn't do too much except some errands with my dad and hit the "Oz" movie which was just OK. Been having a bit of a cool streak here so not much outdoors time either. Anyway, the start of the summer is hear and I was some concerts coming up that I would like to recommend, esp that Stranglers. I saw Hugh a few years ago but a chance to see one of the best proto-punk bands would be awesome. It is shows like this which make me wish I was still in Detroit. Here are my suggestions for this week.

Wednesday (5/29) - Alkaline Trio w/Bayside @ Clutch Cargos

Thursday (5/30) - Amy Gore and Her Valentines open for the Stranglers @ Magic Stick

Friday (5/31) - Uncle Kracker w/Ty Stone @ Downtown Hoedown (Hart Plaza), Fur and Electric Fire Babies @ Small's, Amino Acids open for Against The Grain @ Magic Stick, Paper Route @ Pike Room, Jill Jack @ Detroit School Of Rock and Pop Music (Royal Oak)

Saturday (6/01) - Marshall Crenshaw @ the Ark, Devendra Banhart @ St Andrews Hall, Detroit Cobras @ Magic Stick

The Rev. Horton Heat comments, "We are very excited to be a Victory band now. Since we are going to get back to doing some edgier stuff, it makes perfect sense to be on Victory. Plus, they are as passionate as we are. Stay tuned for some crazy ideas about our new album. Tony said I'm graduating to Pope. Hallelujah!!!"

Like many of the musicians, scholars, carnies and flaneurs that inspired him, Tav Falco is a Southern provocateur grifting his audience with the ol' song and dance act before shuffling out the back door with a wink and a nod. His historico-musico revue, The Unapproachable Panther Burns, originated in 1979 at the nadir of Memphis' postmodern, post-Beale, post-Sun, post-Stax era, when the Mississippi River town had seemingly disappeared from the cultural map and shriveled into an obsolescent landmark.

"What is in a name?" The members of Mustard Plug must have considered this when they casually came up with the title of what seemed at the time to be a short-lived distraction. While also considering the equally ridiculous "Wanker Daddies," "Shrinky Dinks," and "Cookie Puss," it was the title "Mustard Plug" that was chosen as the masthead to carry forth in the band's crusade to bring ska-punk to their humble abode of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Twenty years, 1500 shows and 200,000 album sales later, it can not be denied that the band has surpassed all expectations and permanently staked their claim in contemporary music.

DOLL THE ANTI-AMERICAN IDOL

Doll

Tired of the over saturated, commercially designed and developed music that is being shoved down our throats. Do you want something fresh, honest, in your face? Doll is your band.

Inspired by Sonic Youth, Hole, L7, Flyleaf, they take a no prisoners approach to their music. Their music is a call to all, to stand and believe in yourself, take action, to never be silent. This is more than anthem driven music. There's an intensity that's driven by the drums and bass, overlaid by intricate guitars and atmospheric solos. The vocals will rattle you to your feet.

Doll is Christina Kasper, Peter Kasper, Alex Vance, and Nick Richer. They are from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. They're coming to the Perfect Pitcher in Taylor, MI. I hear the do a blistering version of Billy Idol's White Wedding. Opening are a couple of my local favorites, Glitter Trash and HazardHead. It will be a night of snotty, sleazy, all out rock n' roll.

Rodriguez at the Masonic Theater

May 18th, 2013, at the Masonic Theater

The Masonic Theater is kind of an opera house style theater room. The interior is similar to what you see inside the Fox Theater, but not as ornate, and the capacity is about 10% lower (4404, compared to 5048). In the documentary, Searching for Sugarman, Rodriguez plays to a stadium of several thousand in South Africa in the late 90's. It would take until May of 2013 for Rodriguez to play for a crowd that size in his hometown.

There was a bottleneck of people just trying to get to their seats. It was the result of ushers in tuxedos examining everyone's tickets and guiding them to their seats whether they needed the help our not.

Caught the last half of Jenny O. She's a singer-songwriter with some folk influences that kind of leans more in the indie-pop direction. She was nervous talking to the audience in between songs, but she kept her cool when she was performing. The sound system and the acoustics were great, and she sounded just as clear as her recordings. She'll be back in Detroit on June 23rd, at the Magic Stick.

Much like last November's show, Rodriguez needed help walking out on stage. Unlike last November, he had a band backing him up. They all looked like the guys from Fleet Foxes.

Rodriguez's stage presence was much the same as it has been. He told a lot jokes that he's told on stage before. There was the one about Mickey and Minnie Mouse at marriage counseling, and of course the secret to life. He frequently revealed his age, calling himself a "solid 70". He didn't pontificate about Detroit's politics this time though.

He threw covers into the set sporadically. I didn't always catch what they were right away. Someone else had to inform me when he did a Cole Porter, or a Nina Simone song. I didn't need any help identifying Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". It was weird that this song got a bigger crowd reaction than any of Rodriguez's originals. Overall the whole performance was tight, and there were several standing ovations.

Last November Rodriguez sold out the Crofoot at $20 a ticket. This was after the documentary about him came out, but before it was nominated for an Oscar. This show was announced after the Oscar was won, and the decision to have it in a huge theater paid off. This show sold out, with balcony seats at $35, main floor at $45, and the "orchestra pit" (first two rows?) at $55.
That's a long way from playing to a sparse crowd in a public park that didn't have to pay anything two years ago.

$40 t-shirts had me feeling the Establishment Blues all over again.

Wild At Heart movie review = In The House

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog

Wild At Heart

Just caught this very interesting French movie by Francois Ozon, "In The House" which sounds more like the title of a home invasion movie than a story about a forlorn teacher and his gifted, yet unusual pupil. English teacher Germaine is finding it painful to be reading his student's listless and inane writing assignments when he comes across part one of a series of stories written by the introverted Claude, a 16 year old loner, about a friendship he is starting up with a fellow student, Rapha Jr. From a broken home, Claude visualizes what like in Rapha's household would be like and uses his talents at math to work at becoming his tutor. He uses his access to essentially spy on his home life and integrates himself slowly in the general day-to-day flow of the family even finding himself lusting after Rapha's mom. The movie takes a somewhat understated voyeuristic tone as his teacher becomes smitten with this story.

Germaine sees real talent in Claude's work and wants to mentor him to see if Claude can find the success as a writer that Germaine failed to find. Germaine straddles the line of what is real and what is made up in Claude's stories as he shares the stories with his wife. Germaine slowly becomes as obsessed with Claude's stories as Claude is with Rapha's home life and takes a bigger and bigger role in shaping the outcome. The movie does a great job on keeping us wondering what is real and what is made up in the storytelling process as we reach the end of the story. We have this feeling as Germaine's wife both wants to hear more about the stories but is concerned that her husband is becoming too involved in the process for his own good.

Like Germaine, we as viewers also become entranced by Claude's increasingly invasive insertion into this families life. And when things start to unravel, Ozon does a wonderful job showing the destruction of the intellectuals (Claude, Germaine and his art gallery working wife) and the strengthening of Rapha's more conventional family. The movie is very well acted and the relationship between Germaine and Claude never gets totally out of touch. Ozon keeps in very realistic and plays on our own voyeuristic needs to keep us entranced by the story. It is a joy to see the way Claude feeds his story to his teacher and tries to manipulate him in finding him interesting. This is a very fascinating film and well worth catching. It opens tonight at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak.

I gives this film an A-. Don't miss this film.

Rock on The Range Day Two

Day Two

Saturday, May 18

Rock on The Range decided to turn things up a few notches on day two. The Babst Blue Ribbon stage was in full swing along with the comedy tent in addition to the Jager and Monster main stages.
Gemini Syndrome along with Clutch pulled in some of the biggest and most boisterous crowds on the Jager stage. The Black Veil Brides fans destroyed the PBR stage very early on.
The biggest winner of the night was most definitely Stone Sour. Waves of crowd surfers rolled in on top of the crowd keeping the security guys in full swing for the entire set.

KID CONGO & THE PINK MONKEY BIRDS
NEW ALBUM 'HAUNTED HEAD'
OUT MAY 7TH THROUGH IN THE RED RECORDS!

Magic Stick Detroit
October 25th 2013

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds are proud to bring you the brand new video for 'Conjure Man', from the limited-edition 7-inch single, out now! 'Conjure Man', is a swampy new original, while the B-side is a deranged cover of an old Seeds tune, 'Lose Your Mind' . Neither track will be featured on the band’s upcoming album, 'Haunted Head', to be released by In The Red Records next month.

Legendary guitar stylist Kid Congo Powers (The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and long time cohorts, bassist Kiki Solis (Knife In The Water), drummer Ron Miller (Up The Academy), and guitarist Jesse Roberts (Sandrider, The Ruby Doe) are set to release a brand new album, 'Haunted Head', on May 7th (their third album for In The Red)! Jesse engineered and Ron mixed the album, at the now well-known Harveyville Project High School in Kansas. Waking from a nap in the swamps of outer space, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds ride a geisterbahn into the hypnagogic, a place between sleep and consciousness also known as the “Haunted Head”.
