SHOW REVIEW: FAILURE at St. Andrews Hall 5/25

Whenever a dormant band emerges from the ether after years of hibernation, it's easy to speculate on a motive. Why now? What's the catch? Is it an attention-starved cry for help or a money-grab? In the case of the criminally-overlooked 90s band Failure, it was a chance to come back and do it right. And with a stop at St. Andrews Hall over the holiday weekend, I was curious to check it out.

The air was thick with anticipation. A mostly laid-back crowd filled the hall, talking amongst themselves, wondering what was in store for the night. Both long-time fans and those that may have just recently discovered the band stood with eyes fixed to the stage. Once the band appeared and began the opening notes of "Another Space Song," the crowd lit up. (And speaking of lights, the band had a Tron-like setup on stage with ropes of LED outlines that would glow with the moods of the music.) It was obvious from the start that the band was dialed-in, bringing new life to the older material. Since I never saw them back in the day, I can't say for sure, but I would wager that this is the best the band has ever sounded. While keeping in line with the familiar space-rock tones featured on the signature album Fantastic Planet, the lineup of Andrews, Edwards and Scott had a more muscular feel that powered the tunes like they haven't been played in years.

The night was carefully choreographed for maximum effect, starting without an opener and playing two separate sets loaded with gems like "Frogs," "Solaris," and standout hit "Stuck on You." The band was note perfect and played with a fantastic attention to detail. It was obvious that the guys hadn't just been sitting around for the last decade. And it's true, that the guys have been active in different projects (like Autoloux and Replicants) and it made the playing that much better.  The first set ended with a flawless version of "The Nurse Who Loved Me," which gained a second life on A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step in 2003.

After a 15 minute intermission, with the stage aglow the band returned to power through several more tunes, ending with the haunting and chugging "Heliotropic." The crowd went bananas and it was clear that an encore was in order. And without fail (see what I did there?) the band came back and rocked through three more classics, including "Macaque" from their debut album Comfort. At the end of the night it was clear that Detroit had not forgotten about Failure, and hopefully the mojo of this reunion tour will lead to more in the near future.

Check out more Failure right here.

Andy Warhol Comes to Cranbrook Art Museum: Warhol On Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949-1987+ opening June 21st 2014

Warhol On Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949-1987+

Opens at Cranbrook Art Museum

One of six new exhibitions opening June 21st 2014

Cranbrook Art Museum announces the opening of six new exhibitions that will debut with a weekend of celebration on June 20-22.

Beginning with the opening of Warhol On Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949-1987+, the Museum will exhibit almost 100 album covers, including variations of more than 50 unique designs by Andy Warhol throughout his career. Featured in the exhibitions will be the world-premiere of five recently discovered albums from the 1950s that have never before been exhibited. See every cover Warhol designed, from the iconic Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers to the extremely rare Giant Size $1.57 Each, his first Pop Art record cover.

The sculptural furniture of designer/craftsman and former Cranbrook Academy of Art student Paul Evans will be on display in Paul Evans: Crossing Boundaries and Crafting Modernism. And the multifunctional furniture and architectural units of Ken Isaacs will be showcased in Culture Breakers: The Living Structures of Ken Isaacs.

Follow the history of Cranbrook in film in Cranbrook Goes to the Movies: Films and Their Objects, 1925-1975, and study the lighter side of Cranbrook's history in Ephemera: Fragments from Cranbrook's Social Life.

And finally, explore Modernism through the contemporary works of Amie Siegel's The Modernists and Terence Gower's Ciudad Moderna.

"Cranbrook is widely recognized as the 'cradle of Modernism,' a history that we have reflected in our two most recent summer exhibitions, George Nelson: Architect | Writer | Designer | Teacher and Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America," says Gregory Wittkopp, Director of Cranbrook Art Museum and the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research. "This summer we are illuminating some of the lesser-known stories of mid-century Modernism, including two designers that studied or taught at Cranbrook: Paul Evans and Ken Isaacs. We will also look at Andy Warhol, who, although undeniably iconic, is not known for his designs for record covers. His story is one that can only be told here at Cranbrook. With the recent gift of this collection from Frank Edwards and Ann Williams, Cranbrook Art Museum now has the world's most comprehensive collection of Warhol's record covers, including several covers that have never been seen publicly."

It all kicks off with the ArtMembers' Opening Reception on June 20 from 6-10pm, featuring the music of NUCLASSICA and the Music Institute at Cranbrook. The exhibitions open to the public on June 21, and we'll continue to celebrate with the PNC Bank Family Fun Celebration on July 22. See below for details about each exhibition and dates/times to join the fun.

FEATURED Exhibition Details

Warhol On Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949-1987+
June 21, 2014 – March 15, 2015

The exhibition is drawn from Cranbrook Art Museum's preeminent collection of record covers by Andy Warhol, a recent gift by Frank M. Edwards and Ann M. Williams, and premieres five recently discovered covers from the 1950s that have never before been exhibited. The album covers range from the extremely rare to the widely recognizable; together they offer a unique lens to survey the artist's career from a young graphic designer to a cultural phenomenon. At the same time, the exhibition documents the history of the mass-produced vinyl record and the zeitgeist of these eras through the inclusion of music, video, and artworks from the Museum's extensive Andy Warhol collection, including nine prints, which are a recent gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Listening booths in the gallery will allow viewers to play select albums, thereby producing an experience between the cover art and the music—rock, classical, opera, jazz, soul, experimental—the way Warhol intended. The exhibition also includes album covers by other musicians that have controversially appropriated Warhol's imagery and testify to his influence on subsequent generations.

The world-premiere presentation of Warhol on Vinyl: The Record Covers, 1949 – 1987+ was organized by Cranbrook Art Museum and curated by Curator of Contemporary Art and Design Laura Mott. The exhibition is sponsored by the Jeanne and Ralph Graham Exhibition Fund and the Clannad Foundation.

Wild At Heart

The wonderful photographer and model Bunny Yeager has died at the age of 85. People have heard of Bunny because of her long association with Bettie Page and the many pictures she took of Bettie. However, Bunny was a good model herself, mostly in swimwear, some of which was custom-made (esp bikinis). Bunny also published several books on photography and she was the first women to shoot for Playboy. I have one of her Bettie Page prints and would like to recognize Bunny as a remarkable woman in many ways, and she did break into the field of photography as a pioneering woman, too. RIP Bunny!

Here are sme shows I recommend for the week:

Tuesday (5/27) - Samantha Fish @ Callahans

Friday (5/30) - Dewtons @ Smalls, Avett Brothers @ Meadowbrook, Dierks Bentley @ Comerica Park

Saturday (5/31) - Kellie Pickler @ Comerica Park

Sunday (6/1) - Band Perry and Annabelle Road @ Comerica Park

TONIGHT--Ronny Tibbs & the 305's, LE VOYAGE, and TART

New Way Bar
23130 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale, Michigan 48220

Tonight is certainly one show I'm looking forward to. Le Voyage is a band I've seen a few times and believe to be one of the very best 'must see' bands from Detroit- like an early 2000's Radiohead with more of a Phoenix vibe in the hip shaking. Also, TART- I caught a set at The Loving Touch and New Way Bar and heard amazing things with delay pedal guitar work and very cool art-punk female vocals.
Ronny Tibbs and the 305's- who I assume are closing the night- are another band I'm genuinely excited to see. With a nod to the greats of yesteryear, they take traditional tonal influence and rhythms  and rock it from a matured indie-rock mindset. Their drummer is a nice guy too.

#HeresToDad - Miller Lite Fathers Day Promo

Make Dad’s day with Miller Lite’s original can!
Win a chance to toss out the first pitch on Father’s Day, thanks to Miller Lite

Orion Township, Mich. (May 15, 2014) – This Father’s Day when you cheers to dear ole Dad, you might choose to do so with the same light beer that changed the industry four decades ago.

Miller Lite transported us back in time by bringing back its original Lite can earlier this year. The nod to nostalgia continues this Father’s Day as beer and baseball bring families even closer together.

“There’s something special about sharing a beer with your dad on Father’s day – and the Miller Lite Original Lite Can is the perfect way to bridge that generational gap and pay homage to the guy who’s been your best friend for as long as you can remember, ” said John Ford, Miller Lite field marketing manager and Royal Oak resident. “We’ve been helping create great memories for nearly 40 years and we’re always excited to offer new Miller Time Moments for our fans. Watching the Tigers play baseball on Father’s Day. Wow, it’s going to be a perfect day!”
Even more memories can be made this Father’s Day – thanks to Miller Lite and the Detroit Tigers, too. Fans with an Instagram account are encouraged to upload photos of with their own fathers and hashtag them #HerestoDad by May 31 for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Detroit Tigers game on Father’s Day, June 15 at Comerica Park.
Fifty of those who enter – and show the best photos – will win tickets and entry to the Party in the Park picnic, complete with food and Miller Lite. Of those, one lucky fan will be chosen to throw out the first pitch.
For more information on the contest, visit tigers.com/millerlite. Keep an eye out on the Detroit Tiger’s Facebook page for the best photos.
Powers Distributing, the number one distributor of MillerCoors across Michigan, understands the family connection. Not only is the company celebrating its 75th year in business, but Powers Distributing is family-owned. Brothers Gerald and Robert Powers co-own the company as presidents and Gerald Powers’ son John Powers us national on-premise chain account manager.

Powers Distributing serves Oakland and Macomb counties, where MillerCoors is the second largest beer brand by sales. The Orion Township-based business and its owners understand the impact of the iconic, temporary packaging. The white limited-edition Original Lite cans are being sold in 12-, 16- and 24-ounce sizes through Sept. 30, 2014.

“Customers are flocking to the original, authentic beer that created the light category,” said Jeff Bright, director of marketing for Powers Distributing Co.

TOMORROW: the Counter-Elites and Amino Acids at Corktown

 The Free Life
Narc Out the Reds
The Counter-Elites
The Amino Acids
Friday, May 23
Corktown Tavern
1716 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI 48216

Hey, check out this local outfit, The Counter-Elites. After I met them a few weeks ago, a strange thing happened. They gave me a copy of their CD and...I listened to it. All the way through. More than once—the thing actually stayed in my car's CD player for a couple of days. Trust me, this is an accomplishment.

This show will be the most fun you've had in a month. You like fun, right?

Motor City Comic Con: A Super Good Time

Motor City Comic Con strolled into town this weekend with three packed days of celebrities, comic book artists and cosplayers up the wazoo! Friday started with the usual pace of a nice size crowd of fans getting an early peek of the show. This year’s show more than ever before was full of big TV stars. William Shatner had a long line that wrapped around the aisles the entire weekend. I read he’s 82- years-old, but he must have a jacuzzi with the secret of youth formula because he never tires. Scott Wilson, Hershel from AMC’s the Walking Dead, had a steady line as he greeted every fan with a smile and words of wisdom. Saturday was a full house with what must have been thousands of fans inside while hundreds of others were searching for parking spaces. In the showroom the aisles were full comic artists displaying their work. The hidden gem of the show was J. O’Barr, hidden at the back of the hall but displaying pages of his work on the Crow and sharing stories of Detroit in the 90’s.
Scott Wilson of the Walking Dead

On Sunday the best panels came when John Barrowman of Torchwood shared his enthusiasm for Scifi and meeting fans. Katie Cassidy of Arrow was charming and comedic during her panel as she spoke about her love of fashion and acting.

But, honestly it was hard to focus on the comics and artwork with a hall full of cosplayers. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn cosplayers were there in droves among the Star Wars faves and several others costumed up as our superhero favorites. At the end of the weekend, my stash from MCCC included original artwork, a few cheap trade paperbacks, autographs, a few hundred pictures and a thousand memories.

UPCOMING: Failure - 5/25 at St. Andrews Hall

One of the year’s most anticipated reunions,  Failure are now out on their first tour in 17 years.  The band performed their first show in February at the El Rey in Los Angeles which sold out in moments and was described by Spin as “so dynamic, sweeping, warm and expansive that it felt like the perfect combination of an arena show with an intimate setting,” with the Orange County Register calling it “an almost spiritual experience."

Widely hailed as one of the most underrated alternative bands of the 90s,  Failure covered some of the same sonic territory as Soundgarden, Nirvana and Tool, but set itself apart with a lush and textured sound. Original members Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards and Kellii Scott make a stop this Sunday night at St. Andrews Hall.
