Duran Duran are as much of an unstoppable force today as they were when they first formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England – still commanding the respect of the finest players in the game.
During an illustrious career spanning three decades, Duran Duran have remained at the forefront of popular music, consistently pushing the creative envelope and breaking new ground.
Since their inception, the band have sold over 70 million albums, recorded countless hit records, received numerous accolades, and have been presented with no fewer than five prestigious “Lifetime Achievement” awards (MTV Video Music Award, Q Magazine, The BRITS, Ivor Novello, Spanish Ondas).
On their current studio album, Red Carpet Massacre (Epic Records) they have collaborated with top producers Timbaland and Nate ‘Danja’ Hills, as well as long-time Duran fan Justin Timberlake, creating a record that has garnered them some of the best reviews of their career.
Now on the road, with their Red Carpet Massacre World Tour well underway, Duran Duran are returning to US shores for a 22-date run with a spectacular new production that will showcase their latest record alongside all of the hits from their extensive catalogue. These shows will be the band’s first in America since their unprecedented two week run on Broadway last November, when they played the new album in its entirety prior to its global launch.

SEVEN SIGNATURES: PASSIONS IN PAINTING - Lawrence Street Gallery - Fri May 2nd 6-9pm
Opening Reception (public invited)
Friday May 2nd 2008
6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
22620 Woodward
Ferndale
248-544-0394
Lawrence Street Gallery will host “Seven Signatures: Passions in Painting, a group exhibition from April 30 – May 1 with an artistsʼ reception on Friday, May 2 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
Painting can be a lonely endeavor, but these seven women artists have a long history together painting, selling, exhibiting, and sharing weekly studio time at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Cener to offer stimulating critiques, inspiration and encouragement to each other.
They are all members of the Birmingham Society of WomenPainters (a group that begin in 1944 and was instrumental in establishingthe BBAC).
The artists are:
Elizabeth Sylvester and Emily Patz of Beverly Hills, Janet Clarke of Birmingham
Lillian Moran and Marica Tournay of Troy
Margaret Kelleher of Bloomfield Hills
Fran Nicolson of Bingham Farms
Fran Nicolson writes,”I have been painting for over 40 years, in oils, watercolors and pastels. My whole life has been in the arts. When my children were young it was hard to find time to paint so I joined the BBAC and it has been my second home.”
She has been in numerous juried exhibitions as well as one-person shows.
Janet Clarke writes “I paint subjects from nature. Floral bouquets are always painted from fresh flowers in my studio or outdoors. Landscapes are painted on location and from my current sketch book. Her acrylics and watercolors are in many private collections and she has exhibited in numerous juried and one-person exhibitions throughout her career.
Elizabeth Sylvester writes, “I have painted for over 45 years from newlywed apartment to full house to empty nest. Art has been my lifeline throughout life's richest joys and deepest losses. My work has developed from realism to impressionism and on to abstract experimentation.” Elizabeth has been involved with the BBAC for many years and is the current President of the Birmingham Society of Women Painters.
Emily Patz writes: “My recent work includes using acrylic paint on wood and canvas. Collage materials, such as, fabric, paper, sand, crushed eggshells, gel medium, etc. are incorporated throughout the painting using color to unify abstract shapes. Colors used are influenced by my trips to the Southwest.”
Lillian Moran's paintings use areas of color to establish composition. She works in acrylic, sometimes combining it with watercolor and collage.
Marcia Tournay writes, “My paintings begin with a chosen color shape. The next color and shape balance the first. I continue painting until the entire canvas is filled, using the elements of abstract art: intensity, value, and proportion. The next layer will be collage using such items as rice paper, sand, printing techniques, cloth, tissue paper, screen etc. She likes her viewer to be able to read her work; where she began and what layers were successively added.
Margaret Kelleher has Bachelor of Design from U of M and Master of Art from Wayne State University. She has been a member of the BSWP since 1956. She works in watercolor and acrylic. Last year at the BSWP annual exhibit at the BBAC, Margaret was awarded the Best of Show for her painting. Her art reflects her travels to Italy, France, and northwest Canada. She taught previously art to children in Ohio as well as the BBAC.
FREE EVENT: Chicago Children's Choir - The Music Hall
FREE CONCERT
Chicago Children's Choir
Sunday May 4th
2pm
Historic Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts
350 Madison, Detroit, Mi 48226
313 887-8500
More than 40 young singers from the world-renowned Chicago Children’s Choir will be featured guests at the Second Annual Concert of the Detroit Children’s Choir.
Free to the public, the concert will be held at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.“As part of our continued effort to reach and support our youth and provide endless opportunities for our young people’s involvement in performing arts, Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is proud to collaborate with the Detroit Children’s Choir,” said Vince Paul, President and Artistic Director.
“This collaboration doesn’t just engage the young people of southeast Michigan; it creates the condition where great performers and great leaders are born and nurtured!”
A recent study from the Center on Education Policy indicates that the No Child Left Behind law has led to a 16% decline in the time devoted to art and music instruction in Michigan public schools over the last six years.
The loss of the arts and music limits the kinds of skills and capacities children develop in school.Established in 2006, the Detroit Children’s Choir (DCC) uses the discipline of choral singing to enhance self confidence and academic skills while building social awareness in young people in Detroit. During the 2006-2007 school year, DCC operated in four schools in the Detroit Public Schools system – serving a total of 125 children.
The Southwest Neighborhood Choir, a partnership with Living Arts Detroit, is in its second year of operation out of Messiah Church. Now an approved vendor to the Detroit Public Schools, DCC holds in-school choirs in four schools this school year.
In addition, an East Side Neighborhood Choir was formed in 2007 in partnership with Wayne County Community College District’s Eastern Campus. “Connecting children through choir bridges social differences and enhances awareness of different viewpoints,” explained DCC founder Carol Schoch.
“DCC brings together 125 of Detroit’s children in grades 3-8 – representing a wide range of ethnicities, religious and socio-economic levels – in a way that strengthens team building, creativity, social interaction, understanding, and connection.”
This inspirational free event takes place on Sunday, May 4th at 2 PM

"Join the Walk MS: Movin’ in the "D" at Comerica Park and become part of a powerful movement to create a world free of MS.
We’re planning an exciting day of fun, with a route that shows off some of the highlights of Downtown Detroit! Of course, there’s nothing like the giant Tiger in front of Comerica Park, and we’re right across the street from the magnificent Fox Theater, but you’ll also see Campus Martius, Cobo Hall, Hart Plaza, Greektown and Ford Field.
If all goes well, you may also have the chance to stroll along the incredible new Riverfront walkway! We look forward to seeing you, and we know you’ll be working hard to help us raise $400,000 at the Detroit site!
We have great online fundraising tools in My Participant Center that make it very easy to ask for and receive support, and donations can be turned in through June 13, 2008 (July 18, 2008 if you participate in Traverse City) to qualify for prizes.

"Hojas Rojas number one rule is no acoustic guitars. Though their latest album features synthesizers and triangle, all recordings were done in analog in the band's hometown of Minneapolis. The group has only two influences: Jack White and Kurt Vonnegut.
Northville's The Morgan Fair features every creepy-sounding instrument you can think of and a strangely calm and clear vocals. With a name like The Copper Thieves, you know this group is from Detroit. Psych out with them on a Thursday night at the PJ's Lager House!"

Poi Dog Pondering pics/interview - Alvin's Detroit
Described as body music Poi Dog Pondering has been creating good vibes since 1986.
PDP started playing music in Hawaii and quickly moved to the main land picking up other members in Austin Texas before settling down in Chicago in 1992.
I was fortunate to sit down and meet Frank Orrall (a founding member) at Alvin's earlier this month before their show. The first thing I noticed was how friendly Frank was, even stopping fans to say hello by name. PDP has an organic process in writing and recording and enjoy traveling and playing on the road. Poi Dog Pondering is a 12 piece band who usually plays sold out shows in Chicago's Vic Theater and the Metro.
When PDP hits the road not all members are able to travel, and "that's the fun part, adapting and staying liquid". The fans agree some traveling from as far away as Ft. Wayne Indian and Toledo, Ohio. "There are about 200 of us who chat online and meet up before shows" said Chris Hernandez "I've been to 50 shows myself", I might mention Chris was setting up to record the show live, something PDP encourages. One fan put it best "If you don't like music, your not going to like this band".-- Amy Palomar

Torch with a Twist - Cliff Bells
Once a month Cliff Bells in Detroit transforms into a Big Top for a traditional Vaudevillian Show. One which not only engages the audience for 3 hours (seems more like 3 minutes) with classic burlesque shows and snake charmers, it spills into the streets at intermission with fire eaters and jugglers.
Torch with a Twist was created by the lovely and talented Grace Detroit who is, of course, a torch singer. Grace had this idea a couple of years ago after an inspiring trip to Burning Man where she met many of the act in this tight nit group. Each performer is responsible for their own costumes and acts and not everyone can make it to every show, so each month is different and I personally want to see a few of those acts over and over again.
You can find Torch with a Twist on myspace and each month at Cliff Bells. This group is taking off, recently performing at the Music Hall's Fringe Fest and now has a few gigs at the Jazz Cafe.
If you haven't seen them do so soon, with an act this great you'll thank me for it.-- Amy Palomar
