When The Willowz formed in 2002, they were just teenagers with ambitious dreams. Fast forward seven years and the band has found itself featured on the soundtracks to such award winning films such as “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” and “The Science Of Sleep,” and on numerous publications’ “best of the year” lists. Nominated for L.A. Weekly’s “Rock Band of the Year,” making Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of the Year, and coveting the O.C. Weekly’s “#1 Rock Album of the Year” for their 2007 record, Chautauqua, The Willowz are gearing up for the release of their eagerly anticipated forth album, Everyone.
Opening the record is “Break Your Back,” a track that starts out with simple percussion and colorful vocals before crescendo-ing into a massive, heavily layered song, paving the way for the remainder of this dynamic rock album. “I Know” rides the waves between garage rock vigor and an undeniably addictive, anthemic chorus. “Way It Seems” highlights lead vocalist Richie James Follin’s incredible range as his falsetto accompanies the always tempo changing song, making it stand out as an original track that can’t be qualified as either fast paced nor a ballad, but rather manages to be both.
The Willowz once again challenge the rock genre with their unique and beautifully crafted sound. Their luscious harmonies and fiercely rocking melodies make Everyone a gem in their already expansive discography.
Canadian rockers Inward Eye are set to release their debut album "Throwing Bricks Instead of Kisses" through J Records on August 18, 2009. The band, which consists of the Erickson brothers, Dave (vocals/bass), Kyle (guitar/vocals), and Anders (drums) will be on the Vans Warped Tour starting July 28th through August 14th. Inward Eye also have touring commitments with Flogging Molly for two weeks in October throughout Canada.
The same day the band is set to embark on Warped Tour,

Everyone is looking for the next big band, the next group that is poised to create a shift in the musical cosmos. For several years now Fearless Music TV has been at the forefront of that search. And the Brooklyn rock/folk group, Hollands, are their newest candidate for success as they cross the East River to perform on the Fearless Music Stage at Manhattan’s Crash Mansion on August 19.
The performance will be airing later in the fall on the internationally syndicated television series, so be sure to stay tuned. Other acts that have recently taken the Fearless stage have been Gogal Bordello, DeVotchka, and Metric.
In preparation for their next release, Mother EP, in October, Hollands has been playing shows all summer and we’ll be wrapping up the season with a show at Brooklyn’s Pete’s Candy Store on August 21.

Formed in 2008 by Cody Dickinson of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue are the "modern blues band for the new generation." HCR represents a return to the juke-joint one-chord trance blues of north Mississippi, styles made famous by local blues legends like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Drawing from the traditional songs and modes of the Hill Country, the band stays true to its roots yet pushes the boundary by incorporating new songs and elements for the next generation. HCR’s debut album, MAKE A MOVE, was released in May 2009 and the band continues to tour in support.

If you haven’t heard French Miami yet, enjoy your last few minutes of peace.
Once their songs get inside your head, they start a permanent loop and you will wake up and go to bed singing along. The only way out of this musical addiction is sleep deprivation.
French Miami’s raucous live shows use rock music structures to hold together more technical musical ideas. Jagged guitars, pulsing synths, and precise stop-start rhythms launch seductive refrains that have forced the crowd’s feet off the floors in post-punk singalong deliriums from SXSW to CMJ. The first time you catch their live show you might be shocked to discover there’s no bassist as their ménage a guitar-synth takes the low end as far as it can go with the head-nodding precision of a mathematical equation.
How is this possible? It helps that they’re multi-taskers. Onstage, French Miami show off the technical cred behind their sound by moving non-stop and playing an average of two instruments apiece, usually at the same time. Singer Jason Heiselmann slides effortlessly between baritone guitar and keyboards while delivering vocal melodies in memorable strands too gritty to be called pop, too irresistibly catchy not to be. Multi-instrumentalist Roland Curtis is usually playing a guitar with one hand and a synth with the other with freakish proficiency. Meanwhile, drummer Chris Crawford does precisely what a drummer should do by anchoring their sound in a minimalist beat, knowing when to let loose and when not to.
This was no easy live show to wrangle onto a record, but French Miami knew the right man for the job. Phil Manley (Trans Am, Fucking Champs) committed their self-titled debut - a unique blend of prog, post-punk, and synth-art rock - to eternity. The album waxes nostalgic on anthemic 90s sounds from Archers of Loaf and Trans Am, tastes the angular grooves of Battles and Holy Fuck, and throws in the earnestness of the Boss and Fugazi to balance the sweet with the sour. The result is terse, jagged rhythms fueled by great hooks fulfilled in noisy abandon.

To listen to Blacklist is to listen to people who have chosen to stand in opposition. Complex and modern themes are wound tightly inside impressionistic lyrics, available to be unravelled by the curious listener or ignored by those who find themselves moved primarily by the force of the music. The band's debut LP, Midnight Of The Century, is raw ambition mixed with raw power. Mixed by Ed Buller (Suede, Slowdive, Pulp, White Lies) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Muse, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, U2, Nirvana), it is a potent dose of rock and roll maximalism.
When the revolutionary Victor Serge coined the idea of a midnight in the century, he was referring to the dark pact between two of the cruelest tyrants the world had ever seen. And yet Serge is perhaps best known for his rambunctious, stubborn attitude in the face of such darkness: "the course is set on hope," he wrote. It is precisely this marriage of extremity to romantic optimism that characterizes Midnight Of The Century -- not just in the realm of ideas, but musically as well. Despite its density of sound and shadowy atmospheres, the record is the soundtrack to an uplifting journey that is as personal as it is universal. It is also a fitting manifesto announcing the arrival of Blacklist.

"Here it is! The Gories, Detroit's legendary garage rock band back together for the first time in 17 years! Amazing. We knew it was going down so, on route from Bonnaroo to Athfest, we stopped by Memphis and rocked out to ""Telepathic"". This is one of the songs that got me into them when I first found the album, Outta Here, in a stack of trade-in records at Fingerprints in Long Beach, CA. Needless to say... Something worth celebrating for sure. Check out more videos at www.babelgum.com/icecreamman. song: The Gories "Telepathic".

Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition

Vinology’s Kristin Jonna to judge Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition August 4 in East Lansing
Kristin Jonna, a co-owner of Ann Arbor’s Vinology Wine Bar and Restaurant, will serve as one of 22 judges selected for the 2009 Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition, set for Aug. 4, at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing.
This is the third time she has judged the event, which is sponsored by the Michigan Wine Industry. Her father and a co-owner of Vinology, John Jonna has also judged the competition three times. Both Kristin and John Jonna are certified wine specialists.
The event shines a light on Michigan-made wines. “The industry is growing so quickly and in the right ways,” Kristin added. “Better growers, more developed plots of land, investment in proper equipment – all of this will result in lower prices for better wines.”
The father-daughter team behind Vinology believe the experience of learning about and drinking wine should be an accessible, easily enjoyable one. They draw both novices and wine experts to Vinology by hosting such special events as Summer Patio Tastings where guests can sample the best summer wines in the open-air.
The tastings are set for Thursday July 23, 30 and Aug. 13.
In addition, Vinology offers daily Happy Hour specials including half-off wines by-the-glass, $3 pints of beer and more from 4-6 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to close on Wednesdays. Every Sunday from 4-10 p.m., guests can enjoy 50 percent off 50 wines.
Vinology is located at 110 S. Main Street, south of Huron, in Ann Arbor. Call (734) 222-9760 or visit www.vinowinebars.net.

Natives of the New Dawn 8/1 @ the Magic Stick
NATIVES OF THE NEW DAWN * MIDTOWN UNDERGROUND * FLOPHOUSE * 8PM * $10/$15 * AA
Drinking from the same water and breathing the same Detroit Rock City air as the White Stripes, Eminem and Kid Rock -- not to mention predecessors such as Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger, George Clinton andthe entirety of the Motown roster -- NATIVES OF THE NEW DAWN were formed in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale from the ashes of a rap trio that included MC Vince Mann and Gary “DJ Goo” Hoenicke.
Evolving into a dynamic package of sounds and influences, Natives tightly pocketed rhythm section consists of bassist Mic Rob and drummer Tom Wachter, while the fierce guitar work of Joe Fikany, soulful singing of Tony Nouhan, and raw intelligence of MC Vince Mann create the band’s unique, genre-bending style and sound.

This week in MoneyPenny - Tuesday July 28th 2009
Hey, kids. shake it loose together...
Miss Moneypenny has been working hard for ya.
On a recent Saturday we took a drive to Dundee, MI, to the St. Julian store. My folks swear by their red wine vinegar for salads and buy it by the case. They gave us a bottle and I immediately fell in love with the stuff. It makes salad dressing and marinades wonderfully delicious and easy. When I ran out, I went online and saw that St. Julian's has the largest and oldest winery in Michigan and that they have several different kinds of wine.
This was all it took for me to grab
The actual winery is in Paw Paw and looks like a lovely place to visit with tours and events, but a bit much of a drive. So we went to the store in Dundee right across the street from Cabela's. It's a large wine store, with a nice tasting bar and plenty of stuff to pick from. They offered us case price, so we grabbed 6 bottles of their seasoned vinegar and took a trip around the floor to examine each wine and scratch our heads.
We admittedly don't know anything about wine.
When we got home, we didn't really remember most of what we had picked out. So in order to write to you fine folks about each wine, we had no choice but to spend the week drinking it. It was a tough call to action, but for the sake of journalism we braved through it.
St. Julian Simply Red: $8.49
St. Julian Michigan Cherry Wine: $7.99
St. Julian Red Wine Vinegar Salad Dressing: $6.99
Miss Moneypenny's Ruby Salad Dressing:
St. Julian Red Heron and Blue Heron: $7.19
Braganini Reserve Cabernet Franc: $19.99
St. Julian Red: $8.49
In the line of duty we've had a few wine-buzz adventures. My favorite was when we took a little walk down to the nearby train tracks to pick wild raspberries and busted a neighbor doing the same. She ran home and got us a fresh, deep purple jar of her homemade black raspberry jam; all made from wild Michigan raspberries. It is my favorite product of Michigan so far, and it made a lovely snack on toast with more of my wine.
To top it all off, we discovered recently that Faygo has four flavors still made with real sugar and bottled in glass. Sadly, none of the flavors are Rock n Rye, but we made due with Red Pop. After a long day of wine drinking and breezy Michigan summer, I was like a slap-happy, drunken little kid with my glass bottle of pop.
So from all of this I have learned that wine is fun and not snobby, that Michigan is bountiful, and only the BEST stuff comes in glass bottles and jars.
See? Drinking makes you smart.
Bottoms us, everyone!
Now it's time to dry out and pack. One assignment we never turn down is covering the EODM for MCB. We're off to Canada to see Eagles Of Death Metal in London and Kitchener! You didn't think I was gonna get all soft and boring, just drinking in my back yard all day, didja? Well, maybe someday. But not this week. Stay tuned for a mega-dose of super sexy rock-n-roll madness comin your way. The EODM never, ever disappoint. We'll bring 'em some Detroit Steam and give the Devil all your Motorcity love!
Cheers,
Moneypenny
