Night of 100 Cracks: Hellbound @ Small's by DC-in-Detroit

Noir Leather's "Hellbound"
Small's Hamtramck, 25 September 2010

I've been attending Hellbound events since, oh, the 1940s. Back then (before the war), the events tended to be more like fashion shows with a few appreciative freaks in the audience, and a lot of gawkers. I like what these parties have evolved into.

Small's is a favorite venue of mine. The layout of the bar, and its three discrete areas and countless corners, is well-suited for this sort of party. The dark, cozy booths in the main bar area are perfect for shadowy canoodlings. A spanking bench was set up in the small mid-room, leading to the big performance area with a DJ setup, gogo cage, a little more naughty furniture, a small platform for some more eye-level performance, and the big stage.

This being my first Hellbound at Small's, I wasn't sure when folk would start arriving, or who they would be. I got there around 10 and that turned out to be early, as only a handful had beaten me there (and weren't yet beating each other at all). But I was glad to see that those who were in attendance were clearly not the gawker types -- these were participants.

After fetching my first Red Fish and soda of the night, I clopped my little platforms back toward the main stage and waited for things to get started. Right about then, I heard the unmistakable pop of a sonic boom in my presence. My ears perked, and yonder my glassies swivelled to the young cutie in the mid-room, doing a little demented target practice on the (empty) spanking bench. I set my drink on the ledge, propped my chin on my hand and just nakedly observed him. Because, you know, I'm smoove like that. He noticed me watching (smooooove) and made a gesture as though to ask if I'd like to try my hand. Would I? Would I! (Big nose!)

It had to be after 11 at this point, and there were still no people in the stage area, which was pretty handy considering I was going to need all the space. My guide showed me a basic overhand technique, then handed me his weapon. As I was standing there feeling the heft of the handle, I realized... I'd never done this before. At all. How is that even possible? I extended my arm fully for my first attempt and was reminded -- oh, right, that's why. I'm a natural clod, and it seemed entirely likely that I'd put my own eye out with the thing. My new sensei was patient, though, advising me to snap my wrist later on the stroke (that's what she said [oh I so gravely apologize]). After another few limp attempts, ah-ha! The snap! I was just giddy (in other words, dorky). This calls for another drink!

Back in the main bar, my black-clad brethren were beginning to arrive. Some were the folk you'd usually see at Small's on a Saturday. Some were fresh young faces. Some were kinkster aristocracy. There was leather, of course, and lace and latex, but also denim and thin cotton and -- oh joy to my soul! -- feathers.

There were certainly the usual contingent of the head-to-toe latex-clad, the human doormats, the crossdressers and the plumbing fetishists. Wait, what? All right, that was a new one on me even. Boy wore a mean pair of cutoffs though.

I'm pleased at the direction the stage shows have taken, too. Yes, they're beautiful people. Yes, they're stunningly garbed. But I'll let you in on a little secret: these aren't just performers. I recognize some of these people; this is really what they do. The saddle that was on that burly boy's back? They own that.

There is, I think, a misbegotten notion of these fetish/fashion-friendly events that it's all furtiveness and dirty secrets. It's not; I mean, unless you want it to be (hot). The Detroit fetish community is a bunch of friendly people, and a lot of familiar faces (including, no joke, the man who did my drywall). It's never once occurred to me at any of these events that "oh I hope I don't see someone I work with!" For one thing, if they see me there, it means they are there, too. For another, I look pretty good in PVC and pink fishnets. But beyond that, there is nothing shameful or untoward or weird about what goes on at these parties. Okay, I admit, my weirdness slider may be a little further down one side than your average schlub, but the point is, these are people having fun. And what could be more wholesome?

Confidential to Our Young Whipmaster: You owe me a pair of fishnets.

Now INTRONAUT is preparing to unleash what is perhaps their greatest work yet with the release of Valley of Smoke on October 12th via Century Media Records. The highly anticipated album is full of surprises, including the title track, which is the focus of their latest installment of the In The Valley of Smoke web series. About the Parlotones:
The Parlotones have shared the stage with musical greats, including: Kings of Leon, The Gossip, Violent Femmes, Jimmy Eat World, New Model Army, Evanescence, Staind, The Rasmus, UB40 and Collective Soul. They have achieved multi-platinum-selling status in their home country of South Africa, selling more records there than Coldplay, The Killers, and Oasis combined. Their big-budget music videos have won them a string of MK and SAMA Awards, including a 2010 SAMA Award for “Best Music Video of the Year” for the song “Push Me to the Floor.”South African sensation mixes atmospheric pop-rock with educated lyrical themes, join Blue October on tour September 17.

The release of Stardust Galaxies marks the U.S. introduction of a group that has spent the last 18 months on a sold-out, 300-date world tour, packing out 1000+ capacity venues in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Russia, and the UK. Most recently, the band performed in front of a global audience of over 1 billion viewers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Celebration Concert.

Stardust Galaxies’s lead single, “Life Design,” serves as an “ode to those who have created success despite adversity,” says The Parlotones’s front man, Kahn Morbee. “It’s a celebration of those people who have an innate exuberance for life, and pursue the betterment of their own lives and the lives of those around them.”

The band practice what they preach, having become activists against two of the most deadly epidemics in their home country of South Africa: AIDS and malaria. The band has raised funds for The StarFish Foundation and performed at a number of AIDS awareness concerts, including POSI+IVE Rocks. Each year, The Parlotones speak at grade schools in South Africa, educating younger generations on AIDS prevention, and donate all revenue from on-site performances back to the schools themselves for facility renovation and community development. The band also champions for United Against Malaria, an initiative which is attempting to eradicate malaria in Africa.

The South African natives have weaved themselves into the fabric of their home country’s history with performances at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration of Jacob Zuma, Africa Day, Live Earth, and a record-breaking show at the Dome in Johannesburg, where they wrote their own piece of African history by becoming the first South African band to ever headline the venue.

From their origins in Johannesburg, South Africa, the rock 4-piece have achieved multi-platinum-selling status with their darkly romantic lyrics, atmospheric pop structures, and ambitious live shows that have earned them rave response from fans and critics alike.

RE: Robin Goodfellow – Susannah, You See Beyond EP
http://romanticair.com/

Clouds part and the stars come out.
Somewhere in a forgotten forest, creatures of unknown origin dance and dine.
They feast upon hearty board and a wash of dandelion wine.
A rhythmic decay of insect voices and woodland scurrying gives way to a near silent night.
With the seasoned crackle of burning timber,
the tribe eases into an untroubled and merry collective dream.
Not far off, but not too close,
the throaty call of an ancient predator breaks the silence.

For some minutes, reverberations of the distorted howl hang.
Echoes swirl, tripping through the tangled arms and legs of dream-state lovers.
Oh, how the wolf longs to become the chimera in the rainbow trance of the group.
But not tonight.
And so, without a host, the echoes rise into the night sky.

It is a new moon.
That final guardian of earthly sound and light is on leave
as songs of hope, loss and longing simply drift into space.
Into nothing.

Nothing?
Once, you wondered what would exist if the world did not.
But you couldn't really imagine that, could you?
So picture the smallest thing, perhaps the end of a record needle.
Of course, even the sharpest point has some volume.
But is it there or is it not?
This is the point at which Robin Goodfellow enters our world.
We sing their gentle harmonies as a mysterious woodland clan once did.
We ride their waves back and forth and back again in ritual tribute to relations long since passed. We gather beyond the moon as a symphony of synths burst into an infinitesimally small concussion of sound and noise.
Meanwhile, ancient signals expand further and deeper into space.
And as they reach the stars, what knowledge will be transmitted back in time?
Indeed, the stars do not lie to you.

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH - Jazz Cafe Detroit - Thurs/Fri Sept 30th-Oct 1st 2010

GUITAR ICON, ALLAN HOLDSWORTH
at JAZZ CAFÉ SEPT 30 - OCT 1ST

Jazz Café is extremely proud to welcome back, the incomparable, genre-bending guitarist, Allan Holdsworth, for two nights and four shows, Thursday, September 30th and Friday, October 1st at 8PM and 10PM each night, in the cozy confines of the Jazz Café at Music Hall.

Along with his longtime rhythm section stalwarts, Ernest Tibbs on bass guitar and Chad Wackerman on drums, this is a power trio that not only swings, but burns. Holdsworth possesses an incredible physical and technical prowess, and also is a master of digital guitar synthesizers that expand and enhance his style, while pushing the limits of what an electric stringed instrument can musically produce. The saxophone, and not the guitar, seems to be his biggest influence, specifically, John Coltrane’s improvisational excursions and his phrasing, which Holdsworth translates seamlessly to the energetic blasts of the electric guitar.

Born in Bradford, England, Holdsworth cut his teeth in early 70’s progressive Rock bands like Tempest, Gong and the legendary, Soft Machine. In 1978 he would form arguably the last of the great Prog-Rock super groups, UK, along with former King Crimson and Yes Drummer, Bill Bruford and bassist, John Wetton also from Crimson- as well as violinist/multi-instrumentalist, Eddie Jobson who had played previously with Frank Zappa and Roxy Music.

As Progressive Rock gave way to the DIY aesthetic of Punk Rock, Holdworth gravitated toward improvisational instrumental fusion, pioneering a sound and lead style that guitar virtuoso, Eddie Van Halen would deem as a major influence.

Upon the urging of former Miles Davis drummer, Tony Williams- who was responsible for nudging Davis’ work to include Rock-based riffs and motifs, featured Holdworth on his hallmark album, “Believe it”. Holdworth continued blurring the boundaries between Rock and Jazz in the 1980’s with his next primo instrumental guitar and experimental group, IOU - which was also the name of his first solo record, with drummer Gary Husband and bassist, Paul Carmichael. The group would also include stints by Jeff Berlin and Cream vocalist, Jack Bruce, who would contribute vocals to their 1984 Grammy- nominated, “Road Games”.

In the early 90s, Holdsworth also appeared in a jazz “supergroup” with other great jazz and fusion legends, including Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, and Michael and Randy Brecker among others. 1992's Wardenclyffe Tower furthered an exploration of Holdsworth's own designs for baritone electric guitars (built by luthier Bill DeLap) and broadened the use of his chordal orchestrations and solo phrasings via the SynthAxe.

The release of Holdsworth's next album project, None Too Soon (1996) marked a departure in style from this impressive string of previous group projects. It provided Holdsworth the opportunity to showcase his interpretation of some classic jazz standards and several originals by one of England 's best-known jazz pianists, Gordon Beck.

Holdsworth recorded some of his favorite, lesser-known jazz standards, along with several Gordon Beck originals, in a “straight-ahead” jazz vein, drawing upon Beck's talents as an arranger.

Wild At Heart

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Well, it’s getting to that time when the last show is right around the corner. This Saturday (10/02), I will be hosting my final show of Wild At Heart on the airwaves of WXOU 88.3FM (www.wxou.org). I hope everyone can tune in. I don’t really have anything special planned in terms of music, but I might have an interview with RA Mihailoff talking about the new slasher film Hatchett II (to be reviewed here next week).

As my time here in Detroit gets shorter, I am still trying to experience as much of the city as possible. My most recent thing was a tour of the Detroit Yacht Club which is the private marina and sailing club in located on its own island off of Belle Isle in the Detroit River between the MacArthur Bridge and the DTE generating plant. The DYC clubhouse is a beautifully restored 1920s Mediterranean-style villa that holds the distinction of being the largest yacht club in the United States. The origin of the club goes back to the 1870’s, though the current building was built in 1923 by George Mason (the same architect who designed the Grand Hotel, GEM Theatre and Detroit Masonic Temple among other buildings in the area). The facility includes 2 pools (with Pewabic tiles), a large trophy room and a grand ballroom and is open for membership for interested parties and you don’t need a boat. On the tour I went on, they gave us a nice buffet to snack on which included meatballs and some wonderful desserts. If you are looking for a club to join, you can contact Jack Lyon by phone (313-824-1200 x233) or email (membership@dyc.com). At the club, you can even take lessons on how to race a yacht.

Detroit Yacht Club

Also, mentioning the Grand Hotel, it is time for Part II of my trip to the Upper Peninsula. Day 2 saw me wake up to catch an early morning ferry courtesy of Shepler’s Mackinaw Island Ferry service. The ride going over was a bit bumpy but not that bad as we got up close to the Mackinaw Bridge before heading over. We had a great view of the island including the Grand Hotel and the two light houses in the bay.

Ferry

Upon landing, I walked around a bit including going through the Biddle House and Mission Church and some local stores before getting on my carriage tour of the island which included stops at the Wings Of Mackinaw Butterfly Conservatory, scenic Arch Rock, Fort Mackinaw and Grand Hotel. The ride itself was around 2 hours and very relaxing as we got puller by teams of 2 and 3 horses. The island itself doesn’t allow cars. The only cars on the island are a police cruiser and fire truck for emergencies. This dates back to 1900 when a vacationer brought his car to the island and caused an accident which killed a couple of horses. Ever since then, you have only horses, bikes and in the winter, snow mobiles. The trip through the State Park includes the local cemetery also. The Park is Michigan’s oldest State Park.

Horse carriage

Arch Rock

I had lunch at the Grand Hotel which was very expensive but one of those you just have to do. The buffet, priced at $40, includes a variety of salads, lunch meats, you-peel shrimp, carved beef, fish, chicken and a nice dessert bar. While the cost is high, you are paying for the beauty of the surroundings which are extravagant. I had a nice view of the water while dining and afterwards, went out onto the porch which is the longest in the world. The hotel has an on-site art gallery, tons of historic items on the walls and in display cases (including Christopher Reeves hat from the movie “Somewhere In Time” which was filmed there, a carriage museum and some gorgeous gardens. Of historic note, the hotel hosted the first public demonstration of Thomas Edison's phonograph on that very same porch. You just feel rich walking around the place and at over $250 a night, you should.

Grand Hotel

After dinner, I walked around Fort Mackinaw. It was a military outpost built by the British during the American Revolutionary War to control the strategic Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron (and by extension the fur trade on the Great Lakes). In use from the late 18th century to the late 19th century, it later became the scene of two strategic battles for control of the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. During most of the 19th century, it served as an outpost of the United States Army and eventually closed in 1895. The view from the fort is very nice as it overlooks the town and the lakes. I have been through many forts in my time and the only thing that really separates this from others is the view. The grounds are well kept and they do firing demonstrations at regular interviews and have a nice history of the island in one building. If you enjoy this type of thing, this is a nice fort to tour.

Fort Mackinaw

Afterwards, I walked around town until the last boat was ready to leave. I got a quick ice cream and a relaxed downtown atmosphere as things were winding down. Back on the mainland, I stopped by a local pastry shop for a pasties before going to bed and getting ready for day three which will come at a later date along with some cool things I found in Windsor this week as I went on a day trip prior to a Bobby Vinton concert at Caesars.

Here is a list of some upcoming shows this week.

Tuesday (9/28) – Citizen Smile opens for Acorns @ Pike Room

Wednesday (9/29) – blues-harp master Charlie Musselwhite @ Callahans

Friday (10/01) – Fireworks w/The Swellers @ Magic Stick, James @ Royal Oak Music Theatre, Shirock @ Academy Of Sacred Heart (Bloomfield Hills), Broken Social Scene @ Michigan Theatre, Jeffrey Osborne @ Fox Theatre, Savoy Brown @ Magic Bag

Saturday (10/02) – King’s X opens for Accept @ Emerald Theatre, Irish folk rockers Great Big Sea @ Chatham Capitol Theatre, LeAnn Rimes @ Macomb Center For The Performing Arts, Mustard Plug @ Blind Pig, Graham Parker @ Corner Brewery (Ypsilanti)

Sunday (10/03) – Primus @ Fillmore Theatre

Monday (10/04) - punk rockers DOA @ The Loop (Windsor), Ra Ra Riot @ Blind Pig

I hope you enjoy you week. I can’t recommend it enough to tour Mackinaw Island if you get a chance. I hear a nice time to go is when the lilacs are in bloom or during the islands jazzfest.

UPCOMING: HEDLEY - Monday Oct 4th @ Crofoot Pontiac

HEDLEY ANNOUNCE U.S. HEADLINE TOUR IN SUPPORT OF NEW RELEASE THE SHOW MUST GO ALBUM, DUE OCTOBER 12th

Multi-platinum Canadian band Hedley – who recently added another three MuchMusic Video Awards to their tally, including Video of the Year for their single "Perfect" – will be hitting the road in support of their October 12th U.S. release of their third studio album, THE SHOW MUST GO. Kicking off October 4th in Detroit, MI, Hedley will take their melodic, celebratory rock on the road with a headline tour across the U.S. (Tour dates below). Fans can also log into to http://www.headlyonline.com/ for video updates from the band's Canadian arena tour throughout September, including messages to each market on the October U.S. tour!

THE SHOW MUST GO is preceded by "Perfect," Hedley's first official U.S. single release, which won two MMVA's in June (including Video Of The Year), impacted at radio on July 26th. "Perfect" became Hedley's 10th consecutive #1 video at MuchMusic earlier this year, a new record for a domestic artist at the video channel. The piano-based power ballad has received more than 1.5 million views at YouTube, and can also be seen on top-rated music site VEVO, as well as the band's website www.hedleyonline.com . The band also recently completed a sold-out Canadian arena tour, with US friends Boys Like Girls as direct support.

Hedley's second album, Famous Last Words broke platinum 10 days after its release in October 2007. The lead track, "She's So Sorry" (which won the MuchLOUD Best Rock Video Award), was followed by more Top 5 hits: "For the Nights I Can't Remember," "Never Too Late," and "Old School," all of which were #1 at MuchMusic (with the exception of Old School which had no video). "For the Nights I Can't Remember" swept the MMVAs that year, winning Best Video, Best Cinematography, and Best Director. At the Canadian Radio Music Awards, "For the Nights I Can't Remember" won the Fans Choice Award, Song Of The Year, and the Chart Topper Award.

"The American people are about to make a new best friend" says Hoggard, who came to prominence as a finalist in the 2004 season of CTV's Canadian Idol on a bet, and later asked fans to vote him off when it became apparent that he might win. The front man puts the credit for Hedley's success right where it belongs: "Much of what we've accomplished has been based on the relationship we've established with our fans. They've progressed and grown right alongside us." For further information go to http://www.hedleyonline.com/

BOOKA SHADE Reurn to Detroit in Oct. 22nd

This past year, Berlin’s BOOKA SHADE—Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier—have cemented themselves as one of the most sought after international electronic live acts. On their last round of dates on this continent earlier this year, highlights included a sold-out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City which saw a stage invasion from the crowd (the New York Times (5/19/10) wrote, “This German electro duo is a perennial favorite of dedicated clubgoers – on a dark, sweaty dance floor, its slinky compositions become heavy with intrigue and promise.”), a Red Rocks Colorado performance that literally ‘rocked’ and stellar sets at Washington state’s Sasquatch and the Movement electronic festival in Detroit to close out each.

In support of their 2010 album More! (Get Physical) the electronic music producer/performers, armed with their keyboards, synths and electronic drum kit, will set off on a 10-date tour.

Strange Boys
Terrible Twos
Natural Child
Gentlemen Jesse & his Men
$7
On The Strange Boys from Austin, TX "...There’s something very sixties and very Dylan-esque about The Strange Boys’ music. It might be the powerful harmonica...or the sense of urgency that hits on R&B-inspired title track “Be Brave,” or it could just be the commanding, croaky croon of lead singer Ryan Sambol himself. While Sambol’s ambling, off-kilter singing voice might seem couched in nostalgia, there’s an element of honesty and genuine appreciation that seeps through...electric organs, neat guitar melodies and a good balance between breezy and old-time, set off Sambol’s soulful voice. The band brings an intriguing, never pandering, blend of genres- from soul to blues to modern day indie rock-packaged as Texas blues." - URB.com.
"The first act was the Terrible Twos. They came out fast and frenzied and hammered through a set. Although the keyboards sounded great, the remainder of the band sounded as if they had just received some news that a close friend had betrayed them, and rather than face legal repercussions for beating up said friend, they decided to release their aggression by savagely abusing their instruments"-some journalist guy, We couldn't say it better!
Natural Child wields a lumbering haze of low-speed cannabis-core steeped in '60s psychedelia. From amped up punky bouts of singable stoner pop, to simmering rumbles that sound like what things might have been if Black Sabbath hailed from sunny Tennessee instead of gloomy Birmingham (England, that is). "
Atlanta's Gentleman Jesse & His Men have found love in the rich, power-pop offerings of the 1970s. With an emphasis on pop more than say, power, Jesse & His Men re-imagine licks as dreamt up by the likes of Nick Lowe, the Modern Lovers, and the Nerves. But they aren't so much an update or study of 70s power-pop as a celebration of those sounds and all their jangling tentacles. While slightly less indebted to the punk kinetics of the Buzzcocks or Damned than the Exploding Hearts were, Smith and his bandmates still follow the same blueprint as the Hearts did so successfully and infectiously."
