Detroit River Days 2012

I spent the weekend down in Detroit along the river front to take in the Detroit River Days Festival, now in it's sixth year of continuing success. Growing up in Boston, MA, with time spend in Florida and Georgia in my teens, I never thought I would end up here in Metro Detroit. Everyone I ever met from Michigan along my travels never had anything good to say about the Metro Detroit or Flint areas, most of them being former GM employee families that had been laid off and transplanted during the 80's. Whatever tales of doom, desolation and destruction described to me back then are a far cry from the region I've come to know and call home over the past 20 years I've lived here. I've lived here in this state longer than any other place I've ever lived my entire life and cannot even fathom thinking about leaving it.

Kicking off the weekend downtown with exemplary weather, you would have to look hard to find the despair and depression often described to me back then. The River Walk was alive with a bustle and hustle that made me reminisce of the times I spent in downtown Boston growing up as a child, when my parents used to take us downtown on the subway to wander the wharf, Faneuil Hall, the New England Aquarium, and all the other great options that Boston had to offer. This weekend, downtown Detroit gave me that great feeling of spirit, community and culture that had been missing from my life for so long, I had almost forgotten what it was like. Smiling and laughing, Metro Detroiters from far and near wandered along the jewel of the river front that has been renewed, rejuvenated, and restored to something that is truly a treasure for everyone to enjoy.

The scent of hot grills wafting out over the midway with the many delectable foods that we know and love from our region was enough to make me forgive my diet. The aural rhythms of the many local bands who represent the soul of Detroit, from the Howling Diablos to The Infatuations to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Civic Jazz Orchestra floated along the wind, capturing spontaneous audiences that ebbed and flowed from stage to stage. The cool, soothing waters of the water spouts with children and parents of all walks of life mixing together in laughter. The grand view of the Ambassador Bridge with the majestic Detroit River, deceptively lazy, on up to the protected marshland and viewing trail that meanders north along the river, offering a tranquil sojourn from the cacophony of the midway scant yards away.

Kudos to all involved who made this event happen, especially those at the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. I am proud to call myself a Michigander these days, and look forward to many more events in this city that is a far cry from the desolate ruination that the media across the nation often portrays us as. Detroit rises, and I am excited to be here with all of you to see it happen.

Tunde Olaniran and more, PJs Lager House, Friday, June 29

Tunde Olaniran is a singular talent. He is a unique singer that pulls his diverse background into an eclectic combination of indie pop, funk and hip hop. Label it what you will, Tunde will settle for “dance” as it is music that gets your ass as well as his shaking.  Speaking with Tunde, hearing his enthusiasm for his community in Flint as well as his larger collection of friends involved with art and music, it’s easy to see why he’s seemingly always happy – he’s works hard to stay that way.

Tunde traveled around the world when he was young spending time in Germany, Nigeria and London. But as it turns out, it’s always been Flint that Tunde calls his home and the place he loved growing up. “I feel like Flint nurtured me as an artist, as soon I got a few opportunities to perform,” He continues, “I feel like getting back to Flint gave me more than what people would think it would bring me.”

While Tunde’s played in various bands, including Stereoluxx, he’s currently solo with a series of ep’s to be released as his “Transgressions.” The first will be out in July and contains his song “Cobra” which came out last year with an arresting video (see below). Tunde performs with 2 dancers that have travelled with him to New York and Washington DC. He likes his stage show to be more of a performance that is fun to be viewed. “I don’t really want to mess around with electronics on stage and the girls bring something more to my show, to me, my live show goes beyond what people expectations are set to be.”

This Friday he’s performing at PJ’s Lager House along the illustrious Marco Polio and the New Vaccines, Pop Goes Duane, who Tunde has performed with but has never seen Duane’s act, and Arlow Xan. It’s a great line up that Tunde is excited to be a part of.  It’s also one of those rare shows that combines a diverse set of local artists that are all striving to give the audience something to remember.

I Am Young Detroit 2.0 Launch Celebration

I Am Young America, L3C is proud to announce the launch of I Am Young Detroit 2.0 on June 30, 2012. IAYD launched in beta in 2009 and was created to attract, retain, and empower young entrepreneurs in Detroit by providing relevant content, resources, engagement and funding opportunities.

This summer, the new IAYD will feature expanded profiles of young entrepreneurs - each one connected to a related educational how-to guide, interactive workspace, home, or business tour, business profile and real-time p2p experiences that will give readers the chance to connect.

The new site will also empower citizens everywhere to champion young entrepreneurs via CitySpotters, I Am Young Detroit's new mobile and web platform that will allow users to earn points by ‘spotting’ a promising new business idea or movement led by a young doer, by playing a ‘supporting role’ as mentor, resource provider, or educator, or by answering user-submitted questions. Points are then used to redeem local gifts and promotions that further support the young entrepreneurs featured on the website. Additional methods of earning points will be added as the platform and user-base grows. Eventually IAYD will use data from CitySpotters to digitally map people, businesses, neighborhoods, and movements in ways that inspire, inform, and evolve in real-time.

I Am Young Detroit will celebrate the launch of 2.0 and Cityspotters with food, music, networking, and featured products by local entrepreneurs.

This event will be held on Saturday, June 30 from 3pm to 7pm at D:hive Headquarters located at 1253 Woodward Street in downtown Detroit. Attendees will be offered the opportunity to sign up and earn their first points on sight. In conjunction with the day’s festivities, Barry will also be celebrating the Grand Opening of D:pop, her latest pop-up retail venture.

Live Review & Photos: Japandroids at Chicago's Lincoln Center by Von Ecker

Last week Chicago was invaded by the Japandroids, a high energy rock duo from Vancouver , British Columbia with Brian King (guitar, vocals) and David Prowse (drums, vocals). The band exploded on stage at the sold out show at Lincoln Hall with a rocking whirlwind full of sound. The guys really killed it from start to finish and I think that its just crazy that a couple of guys could create so much intensity.

But to put it bluntly even though the band kicked ass, the crowd just didn't give back the energy Japandroids deserved. I know that if this band came to Detroit the audience would be going nuts. Sweat infested, whirlpool mosh pits would be formed instantly. Shoes would be lost, t-shirts from concerts past would be destroyed and every sweat drenched person in that venue would come out smiling feeling they got their monies worth. These Japandroids are not a fly by night band. In fact they almost called it quits after two solid years grinding it out until in 2008 they decided to go on an all or nothing kamikaze tour ending at Pop Montreal and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and they got a big break they were looking for. Pitchfork Media stumbled upon the band and gave there song "Young Hearts Spark Fire" a 'Best New Music' designation, instantaneously exposing the band to a large audience outside of Canada bringing back a breath of life into the band.

Since the Pitchfork review the duo have been working non-stop touring over in Europe and North America. I'm a big supporter of the underdog especially when they are on the rise to the top. So to see that the Japandroids are on the rise landing a record deal, selling out venues and even appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, MTV Live, and recently on Last Call with Carson Daily, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I only hope that the Japandroids make their rounds to Detroit, so they can get a taste of energy from real music fans. If you'd like to get a taste of the Japandroids you can pick up their latest album Celebration Rock and get your droid on.

Show Review: The Infatuations @ Detroit River Days June 23, 2012

With so many bands to pick and choose from in Detroit to see on any given night, you would do no wrong by heading out to see The Infatuations. Appearing on the Michigan Lottery Stage on Saturday at the 2012 Detroit River Days, just before the Howling Diablo’s closed out the night, the band stopped countless people in their tracks with their infectious funky Motown sound. Blending a mix of funk, soul, pop and just about every other aspect of music that defines Detroit since its birth, The Infatuations breathe a fresh life in to the music scene.

A sizable crowd had already gathered to see them play, and only swelled from there, transfixing festival goers passing by on the midway, stopping people in transit outside the fence on the sidewalk, lost in the moment of the music, not caring where they had to go because they had arrived at where they knew they wanted to be. By the time the began cranking out their notable hit "Dancing on my Knees", which won them the 2011 Vitaminwater “People’s Choice Award” at the Detroit Music Awards, the crowd had become standing room only, several in the crowd up and dancing in front of the stage.

If Detroit knows one thing at all, it's good music, and the crowd was well aware of what The Infatuations brought to the show. The night's performance found them impeccable in their display of their instruments, especially Caleb Gutierrez's amazing voice which spans a good 5 octaves, if not more. Backing him up with the iconic Detroit Motown funky sound on guitar are Christian Draheim, Chris Polite and Nick Behnan, who strum and strut about the stage like they've been doing for ages. Behind them, but hardly far from sight or sound, The Wolf on bass, Robert Myers and JT Lee on percussion lay down the underlying thick groove that fuels the dynamics of the bands sound.
