OFF! @ St. Andrews Hall Oct 26, 2012

OFF! by Katie Hovland

Old school punk is alive and kicking and screaming. It's full angst and anger and outrage. OFF! is out on tour with The Spits, Negative Approach, Double Negative, and Power Trip. They stop in Detroit at St. Andrews Hall on October 26, doors at 7:00.

OFF! is a supergroup, if there is such a thing in punk. They have a strong history from legendary punk bands, Keith Morris Circle Jerks/Black Flag, Dimitri Coats Burning Brides, Steven Shane McDonald Redd Kross, Mario Rubalcaba Rocket From the Crypt/Hot Snakes. With names like that, you know this is going to be a snotty, sweaty, rip your face off show, punctuated by 1-2 minute songs. As their bio says, "They are the force and spirit of L.A. punk circa '78 resuscitated, reconstituted and re-imagined for a similarly uncertain age."

Supporting OFF! are The Spits. Having been around for 15 years, they ingrained themselves in the modern punk. They devouring the rip-offs and influencing the youth without even looking like they're trying. They aren't trying to reinvent punk, they've just ripped it's head off and drive it home time and time again.

Detroiter's are for a special treat. Negative Approach is supporting OFF! on this tour. They go on tour occasionally, but with a strong line-up like this, now's the time to see them on support our local scene.

If you're nostalgic for an old school punk show or you were too young, come and see what all fuss was back in the day.

I missed the opening set but caught most of Hundred Waters' set and was quite taken with it. I particularly enjoyed Thistle which has a wonderful and whimsical video and Boreal which was near the end of the set. Hundred Waters are on a label with  hip  hop and dub records, most notably Danny Brown. So their record definitely stands out.  Their folky tender lyrics and electronic sound aided by electronic system called logic created a full and atmospheric sound. I enjoyed in particular Nicole Miglis' cunning stage presence and singing and Zach Tetreault's proficient percussion. The label is called biz 3 publicity visit their page at http://biz3publicity.tumblr.com/page/2.  They have only been playing for six months but things are really going good for their career.

The last act Julia Holter was a sophisticated blend of minimalist, avant garde, jazz, eastern classical music, noise and some hints of new wave. The band consisted of Julia who sang in an operatic airy style and a cellist and a drummer.  The masterful and complexity of the playing of the instruments and singing produced a buoyant and layered effect.  Julia's voice took on a deeper tone for the couple of free form jazzier songs. The jazzier songs were heightened by a funky and full bodied groove.  In the third song which had an ample new wave sound she sounded a bit like Kate Bush. Their sixth song was larger than life. It held all of their influences and had a most unusual and satisfying rhythm.
This was an enjoyable evening with two dynamic and unusual groups.

Show Review: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at the Royal Oak Music Theatre

We arrived at the ROMT around 8pm. The show was sold out and there were a few people looking for extra tickets hanging outside the theatre. There was a short line but it moved quickly. I had never been to the ROMT before but the setup was not dissimilar from other theatres I’d been to. We got our tickets, got the tickets scanned, walked into the receiving room and took a peek at the merch table, then continued straight back to the bar.

There was already a decent crowd forming by the front of the stage but the rear of the room was very navigable and there was no line for the bar. Drinks in hand we made our way down to the stage without much bumping or spilling. The majority of the the audience was in their 20s-30s but at one point I did observe a cute couple in their 60s taking out their ear plugs and whispering to one another. We stopped next to a guy in a cowboy hat and I noticed the girl in front of me had on moccasins. As we were waiting for the show to begin Rodriguez’s Sugar Man came on over the speakers and there was an enthusiastic cheer.

A few minutes later CYHSY hit the stage. They opened with Satan said Dance and the crowd sang along shouting “SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!” As much as I tried to make out the lyrics in the following songs to look up later “SATAN” was probably the only word I clearly made out for the rest of the set. I’m not sure if it was the style of the singer or if the vocal mic was low, or a combination of both... but my hearing is also not great so it could be just me.

This was my first exposure to CYHSY so I attempted to write down random words with the intention of looking up the song names later so my review would be more informative but my notes go something like this:

1. Satan
2. ?
3. (Everyone starts clapping along)

4. i know, i know (is this love?)...
5. ahhhhhhhhhhhh oooooooooooh...
6.

CYHSY played 8 or 9 songs/about an hour long set. I eventually stopped trying to make out what songs were being played and bobbed my head along as well enjoying the melodies. The beats were hard hitting and even as we made our way back through the crowd and I could still feel the pounding in my chest from 30 ft away.

Show Review: Dinosaur Jr. at St. Andrews Hall 9/27

What? What's that? Sorry, I can't hear you, I saw Dinosaur Jr. at St. Andrew's last night. Known for loud, no-frills, straight-ahead pop rock, Dino Jr. roared into Detroit in support of their new album I Bet On Sky.
Reunited in 2005, the original lineup of Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph blasted through an hour set of both old and new material in front of packed house.

No exageration, J Mascis is the loudest guitarist I've ever heard outside of Angus Young. Stoically posed in front of a wall of Marshall stacks, Mascis ripped through nearly 30 years of material with ease and comfort, seemingly ambivalent to the jet engine roar eminating from his guitar. The crowd was enthusiastic yet reserved, letting loose only for classic hits like 90s MTV anthem "Feel The Pain.' The new material including current single, "Watch the Corners" holds up just as well as the classics, giving little indication of a band that was non-existent for almost a decade. The guys still have the chops that made them an underground favorite in the late 80s and seem to have transcended into the mainstream, finally gaining the attention they deserve.

Zombie Cat The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty is a book written by Isabel Atherton, illustrated by Bethany Straker, and published by Skyhorse Publishing. Atherton and Straker compliment each other splendidly. This book is a humorous tale about a typical lazy cat named Tiddles who becomes a zombie due to being attacked by a gnarly radioactive mouse after a toxic spill occurs outside of town. When he wakes up he is among zombies. Tiddles yearns to live with his owner Jake and does not want to devour brains.  However upon encountering him Jake is horrified by kitty's gruesome new appearance but still connects with his former pet.

Will it be enough? Will Jake let him back in his home?  I won't spoil the ending for you. This is a must read. I adored the illustrations and all the fun cultural references. Michael Jackson references and converse high tops in a few shades are a few of many details that are delightful. This would be perfect for a zombie and horror film fan. Actually October is a few days away. Snap this one up.

Classical Beauty The History of Makeup is a wonderful volume of various trends in history of prettying oneself up. The social, economic, and political climate of the time of various trends discussed played heavily into this timeline of beauty. Over 430 colorful images reference each period of history adeptly. It is informative, fun, and visually pleasurable to take this journey. Trends in BC Egypt and early makeup pigments are discussed.

Makeup trends from the 1920s to today are at length discussed.  Legendary beauties like Clara Bow, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Kate Moss, Christie Brinkley, Twiggy, and Audrey Hepburn appear in this book. Their influence on culture is detailed. Profiles of cosmetic and toiletry designers, vintage and contemporary ads, makeup application guides, and makeup color palettes pertaining to each decade are concise and eye catching. I highly recommend this volume to any makeup artist, cosmetologist, teacher, student, and makeup consumers. To understand the present well it is important to examine the past. And there are plenty of looks that would be fun to borrow from the past. What goes around comes around right...

This book uses insight from examining your birth chart and your horoscope. It is very important to know exactly when you are born to get a personalized birth chart. A great goal easily gained from reading this book is to understand yourself and others better. If the goal is even remotely achieved then the venture is worthwhile. I found this book to be extremely insightful. The personalized birth charts of well known scientists, doctors, actors, and writer' such as Carl Jung, Barbra Streisand, Anais Nin, and Scott Fitzgerald are included in this volume.

Human behaviors and desires define this book.  Concepts of Jung and Freud and viewpoints from  Perls and Sartre help illustrate the importance of how people communicate.  For some individuals stability is the most important aspect in life. For others it is love. Early in the book concepts and measurement techniques help to determine everyone's distinctive and unique birth pattern psychology.  Later in the book analysis is used to convey strengths and weaknesses of specific patterns. It is easy to complete a self-analysis by the time you finish this book.

Show Preview: Datsik Oct. 5, Royal Oak Music Theatre

The first time I heard the name Datsik was at the Identity Festival last year. On the way into the show I asked people who they wanted to see and their overwhelming reponse was "DATSIK!" During the show I got my first injection of the Datsik experience - a loud, dubstep, heavy noiseblast that send the crowd into a frenzy.

Since last year I've been dosing with Datsik being careful not to consume too much because his musical brew can leave you gasping for air. His first full-length release "Vitamin D" included explosive collaborations with Jonathan Davis of Korn and more. Currently Datsik is on the Firepower tour with Terravita, xKore and Getter playing dates across the US. The Datsik show comes our way at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on Friday, Oct. 5th.

This show has the promise of being the show of the year with dynamic lighting and an assault of sound that won't be matched. So you'd think with all the amped up phrases I've been using Datsik would be a pretty intense dude but it turns out he's a very cool, laid back guy that's easy to spend time with conversing on his career.  Check out this video I did with him last year. Then, be sure to check his show out by any means necessary!

Girl in a Coma Show Review

Girl in a Coma 28

Girl in a Coma is becoming one of my new favorite bands. Feral, ferocious, to be cliché, fierce. Listening to their cds, you can hear the power and energy in their music. It's catchy, but not saccarin. It has bark and bite, but a sweetness to it. Then, you see a live show.
There are no prima donnas here. The girls help bring out and set-up their own equipment. Once, done, they get right to it. They come to play and play they did. High energy output right from the start. Look at the first few pictures, you can see the attitude. They were strutting across stage, dancing around and snarling out lyrics. Even during the slower songs, the power was still there. The crowd was feeling it too. They were up dancing, jumping, and throughly enjoying the show.
Girl in a Coma is a rising new star. They write great songs, put on a energetic live show, and are gracious to they fans. Do yourself a favor and grab one or two of they cds. If you get a chance to see them live, you won't be disappointed.
Check out the photos from the show. Click on photo to see Hi-res version.

In support of the release of her new LP, LeelanauDana Falconberry returns to Detroit on October 23rd with Heartless Bastards

Dana Falconberry suffuses the majesty of nature in the orchestral pop-folk she elegantly crafts in Leelanau, her inaugural release on Oakland, CA's Antenna Farm Records. Citing influences ranging from the prints of artist Gwen Frostic, the books of Willa Cather, and the stark, childs-eye beauty of the Swedish film Let The Right One In, Falconberry finds lyrical inspiration in her idyllic childhood retreats to the Great Lakes State's Leelanau peninsula. The result is a set of eloquent verse reflecting upon the region to which she has returned almost every summer since she was born. "There is this general feeling of nostalgia, but the album is also about the triumphs of being a kid - a celebration of running on the beach or in the woods," Falconberry explains.

BROADWAY in Detroit REVIEW: La Cage Aux Folles by Firefar

When a tranny in a floor length gown going by the name Ms. Lily White Ass warms the crowd with lots of love for Detroit and jokes from political Mormons to black and jewish lesbians with power tools, well you know it's going to be a fun and unusual ride.  God, I love my gays!

The ride is called La Cage Aux Folles at the Fisher Theater - running Sept. 25 thru October 7.  George Hamilton stars as Georges - all bronzed and satiny in his crushed velvet jacket he has limited musicality but not bad for a septigenarian.  The absolute show stealer is Christopher Sieber, playing Georges partner, Albin. The "Les Cagelles" are very talented with the tightest legs, abs and ass you will see anywhere that doesn't have a bouncer named Rocko at the door. They are happily eager to show off their "special skills" in this performance.

Now I know what you are thinking; musicals are fine except for all that singing and dancing they do.
This is entertainment people! It's what they do! And they do it very well.

Take your mom, dad, granny, husband, wife, lover, gay lover, kids, whoever as long as they are over 5.

It's a great gift and a great time.

Double Day Bonanza at PJ's Lager House

Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 9pm
Thee Oh Sees / Ty Segall / Timmy's Organism / Gardens
$15 day of, or $12 adv tix (will call) @ PJ's Lager House - 1254 Michigan AvenueDetroit, MI 48226 or call (313) 961-4668 w/ Credit Card.

Thee Oh Sees are the latest incarnation of songwriter, singer, and guitarist John Dwyer's ever-evolving pop-folk psychedelic group. Dwyer, who hails from Providence, RI, has been active on the San Francisco indie scene since the late '90s, working with several bands, including the Coachwhips, Pink & Brown, Yikes, Up Its Alive, andSwords & Sandals, among others, and he formed OCS (which is an acronym for Orinoka Crash Suite, Orange County Sound, or whateverDwyer decided it was on any given day) initially as a vehicle for the experimental instrumentals he was producing in his home studio. In time OCS morphed into an actual band, and worked under the usual flurry of names, most notably as the Oh Sees or the Ohsees, and eventually as Thee Oh Sees, featuringDwyer on guitar and vocals, Brigid Dawson on vocals and tambourine, Petey Dammit (sometimes listed as Petey Dammit!) on bass, and Mike Shoun on drums. Sounding a bit like the Mamas & the Papas run through a seriously bent garage blender, the band signed with the German Tomlab label and released Sucks Blood in 2007 and The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In in 2008. Thee Oh Seessecond full-length effort Help appeared in 2009 and featured a bit of a garage rock vibe mixed with the band's psych-pop sound. The album Warm Slime followed in 2010. Thee Oh Sees pulled double duty the following year, offering the pop-leaning Castlemania in June, followed in November by the heavier, wilder Carrion Crawler/The Dream, also the band's first recording with second drummer Lars Finberg (The Intelligence).
http://www.theeohsees.com/

Burying ’60s sing-alongs and dance crazes beneath waves of reverb and giddy thud, Ty Segall has carved out his own shelf in the neo-psych garage alongside SF compatriots and collaborators Sic Alpsand Thee Oh Sees. As an exploration of the space between Cro-Magnon fuzz and atmospheric acoustic psych, Ty Segall continues to crank out the best new garage rock from San Francisco.

Detroit Cobras / Tyvek / Melvin Davis and United Sound / Natural Child
$15 day of or $12 adv tix (will call) coming soon @ PJ's Lager House - 1254 Michigan AvenueDetroit, MI 48226

One of the earliest groups to emerge from the Detroit garage rock scene, the Detroit Cobras developed a reputation as the Midwest's finest (and most distinctive) cover band -- while the bandmembers devoted themselves to performing other people's material rather than recycling established hits, the Detroit Cobras dug deep into the well of vintage R&B and primitive rock & roll sides, building an individual identity out of lost classics from the past which they modified to fit their swaggering aural personality.the Detroit Cobras were formed in 1995.

As Detroit continues its seemingly irreversible slide into the tar pits of economical despair, new traditionalists Tyvek have unashamedly taken the reins and harnessed the ambition to keep their slurred and manically refreshing noise pop bouncing around the skulls of everyone still breathing in the real, uncategorizible fumes of the original new wave. With an already impressive trail of essential releases left behind them, including last year's debut album and an infinitesimal stream of "tour-only" CDRs, the band seems to always be evolving, yet never straying far from the original cacophony that earned them a spot in the hallowed halls of modern punk's elite erratics. And as dynamically diverse as Tyvek's recordings have become, their live set also seems to shift dramatically with each new appearance, ranging from a monstrous five piece to the currently stripped-down three-piece that easily gets the job done without sacrificing any of the intensity or brazen brevity that's earned them their fanatical following. With relentless touring, razor-esque songwriting and the ability to adapt to their surroundings without resistance, it's no wonder why they're so adept at captivating the off-center sounds of bygone-era DIY scrapings and spinning it into gold, all without ever really showing any influence of the Detroit "sound" that's known the world over. This trait alone deserves massive respect and forges their creativity in a unique light, as pioneers and as individuals who set forth to create their own thing in their own time, and in essence, are clearly executing some of the most exciting sounds in underground music today.Tyvek's In The Red debut, Nothing Fits, is a scalding collection of amped-up and thrust-out songs that crank up the energy level far beyond their previous releases, and decimate the detractors into the abyss. It's Tyvek at their fiery, screaming best, and if this doesn't curl your eyebrows and your toes simultaneously with excitement, then you might need to settle for something musically akin to hospital food or take another laxative, because this blast of new recordings might just flush out your system to the point of personal emergency. http://www.myspace.com/tyvekmusic

Melvin Davis never scored the crossover hit that would have made him a star, but few artists on Detroit's soul music scene had a more impressive résumé than Davis, a singer, songwriter, drummer, and bandleader who worked with everyone from Smokey Robinson andDavid Ruffin to Wayne Kramer and Dennis Coffey. Davis was born on August 29, 1942, and as a child, his family moved back and forth between Detroit and Milledgeville, Georgia, where his grandparents had a farm. As a boy, he developed a passion for music, seeing Little Richard perform at a juke joint near the family farm and hearing Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers at a church potluck dinner. At the age of 17, Davis joined the Navy and in his spare time began teaching himself to play the piano and guitar and started writing songs. In 1961, he released his first record, "I Don't Want You" b/w "About Love," on the local Jack Pot label, and his next single, "Playboy" b/w "I Won't Be Your Fool," was issued by the fabled Fortune Records, home of such local legends as Andre Williams, Nolan Strong, and Nathaniel Mayer. While Davis had already established himself as a powerful vocalist and skilled pianist, he also took up the drums and landed a regular gig at the Ebony Club in Muskegon, Michigan with his band the Jaywalkers, which included a promising young singer named David Ruffin. The Jaywalkers played regularly all over Michigan and cut a session for Fortune, but it was never released, and Davis' next record, "Wedding Bells" b/w "It's No News," appeared on the short-lived Ke Ke label. Davis then formed an alliance withMike Hanks' D-Town Records, and cut "Find a Quiet Place (And Be Lonely)" for their Wheel City imprint in 1965; while the record barely made a ripple on its initial release, it later became a staple at Northern Soul weekenders in the United Kingdom. By this time, Davis was also attracting notice as a songwriter, and in addition to writing material for himself, his work was being recorded by noted Detroit acts such asJ.J. Barnes ("Chains of Love"), Johnnie Mae Matthews ("Lonely You'll Be"), Lonette McKee ("Stop, Don't Worry About It"), and Jackey Beavers ("I Need My Baby"), with producer Don Davis frequently turning to Melvin for material. In 1966, with the Jaywalkers long gone after Ruffin left to join a vocal group called the Distants (they enjoyed greater success under the name the Temptations), Davis formed a trio with guitarist Dennis Coffey and keyboard man Lyman Woodard. The trio played a long and successful standing engagement at Detroit's Frolic Show Bar and later at Maury Baker's Showplace Lounge. Coffey ended up producing some sessions for Davis that led to a deal with Mala Records, whereDavis enjoyed a regional hit with ""This Love Is Meant to Be" b/w "Save It (Never Too Late)." As soul and R&B took on a tougher, more psychedelic tinge as the '60s wore on, Coffey's guitar style evolved with the times, and Davis played drums on his first solo album, Hair and Thangs, while Woodard's keyboard work also became more experimental and Davis' drumming helped anchor his newly renamedLyman Woodard Organization. In 1970, Davis signed on as the drummer in Smokey Robinson's road band and spent two years touring with the legendary singer and songwriter, as well as playing on several studio sessions, including "Tears of a Clown." Meanwhile, former Motown producers and songwritersBrian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland had founded Invictus Records and released a single created by their studio team that was issued under the name 8th Day. H-D-H needed a band that could tour behind the record, so Davis became 8th Day's lead singer (Woodard was on keyboards), and later he was the voice behind their biggest hit "You Got to Crawl Before You Walk." However, as 8th Day evolved into a proper, self-contained group, they found themselves at odds with Invictus, and Davis decided to strike out on his own, forming a label called Rock Mill Records and a soulful hard rock band called Radiation, with Davis and Dave Penny on double drums and guitarists Wayne Kramer (formerly of the MC5) and Mark Manko. Radiation gigged regularly in Detroit but failed to click in the recording studio, and as Rock Mill's releases faltered in the marketplace and Detroit club gigs became scarce, Davis got out of music full-time, taking his first day job at the age of 42. However, as "Find a Quiet Place (And Be Lonely)" took on a new life in the U.K. and collectors began discovering Davis' other rare sides, he started playing occasional shows in England and licensed his Rock Mill material to reissue labels in Japan and Europe, while Vampisoul Records collected some of his finest '60s material on the anthology Detroit Soul Ambassador.

An art-punk act fronted by flamboyant vocalist/artist Cody Critcheloe, Ssion recorded a series of underground releases during the 2000s, yet were perhaps best recognized for their extravagant live show. Ssion (pronounced "shun") were founded in Kansas City, MO, by Critcheloe, who studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, and draw from a range of influences, including the punk spectacle of Iggy Pop and the dance-party new wave of the B-52's as well as performance art and gay culture. Critcheloe's artwork graces the cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Fever to Tell (2003) and the video for Liars' "There's Always Room on the Broom" (2004). Besides Critcheloe, Ssion's membership includes, among others, backup vocalists Taylor Painter-Wolfe and Shannon Michaels, who respectively create costumes and stage props for the act's live shows. Critcheloe made his recording debut as Ssion in 1999 with Fucked into Oblivion, a self-released cassette/CD-R. I Don't Want New Wave & I Don't Want the Truth, another self-released CD-R, followed in 2001. In 2003 Ssion made their label debut, releasing the Minor Treat EP and the Opportunity Bless My Soul album on Version City Records. Next, following a self-released album, Glory Hound (2005), and EP, Street Jizz (2006), Ssion signed to Sleazetone Records. In 2008 the label released the Fools Gold album and the accompanying Clown remix EP.  In 2012, Bent was released by Dovecote Records.
