Adam Ant Show Review & Photos 8/27/13 @ The Jack White Theatre inside Masonic Temple by Jeff Howitt / Jacob Giamp

“A Wild Nobility” ADAM ANT and THE GOOD, THE MAD & THE LOVELY
wsg PRIMA DONNA @ The Jack White Theatre/Masonic Temple Detroit, MI
8/27/13 CONCERT REVIEW BY MCB’s JEFF HOWITT
PHOTOS BY MCB's Jacob Giampa

People were definitely in the Spirit of Things when they arrived at the Masonic Temple to experience Adam Ant and his band The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse. Some bore a variation of his trademark War Paint on their cheeks. Others fringe flowing, booted and sleeveless. Most some mix of casual and No Wave/Mod. I missed Prima Donna getting myself turned around on Detroit’s mostly lightless back streets. The Temple itself stood dark in the rainy sky this night. I’m thinking the openers, personally chose by Ant himself for this tour, went over well as their merch table was packed with interest once they finished their set. Nikki Corvette and Amy Gore amongst them vampin’ it up.

As I found my seat inside the newly anointed Jack White Theatre I realized Raquel Falcon from Jeecy & The Jungle was in the row right behind me. I recognized her despite her own lack of signature War Paint on this night. She hadn’t seen Ant since she was thirteen years old and was as excited now as then. Moments later lead Retro Girl, Renee Allen made her way down my row and we were all up on our feet once the orchestral intro sounded and would be for the next two hours as Adam Ant and his Band poured through thirty songs, yes Thirty Songs and an Encore with almost no pause.

The set began with a puckish hop from Ant as he took center stage to his recent albums namesake “Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter”; an archaic navel term for being bent over a cannon and flogged that he likens to dealing with a major record label. “Dog Eat Dog” from “Kings of the Wild Frontier” and “Beat My Guest” from “BSides Baby!” hit in quick succession. For “Kick” and “Ant’s Invasion” he would pick up a black Les Paul as he would sporadically throughout the set and add some distorted riffing to the deliberately low end dynamic of the two full kit drummers in his backing band.

Numbers from the new album like “Hardmentoughblokes” and “Shrink” sit thematically well between “Stand And Deliver” from “Prince Charming” and “Room at the Top” from “Manners & Physique”. The latter he mock stumbles, tugging at the kerchiefs tied to his microphone stand before taking off his vest. Playing with theaudience as much as performing. By “Kings of the Wild Frontier” everyone is singing along “A New Royal Family/A Wild Nobility/We Are Family”. Ant refers to the “Kings” character known for wearing the iconic white stripe now as a Nineteenth Century European cavalry officer “The Blue Black Hussar”. I love how the Brit’s find Artistic perspective shedding skins from Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust/Thin White Duke
manifestations to Wild Billy Childish’s forays into Historical role play with The Spartan Dreggs.

“Wonderful” brings smiles to the faces immediately around me and causes the dancing in the rows to spill over into the isle ways. During “Whip in My Valise” scattered dancers start being escorted back to their seats from the orchestra pit and I see the Sea Captain brimmed Frank Woodman of Caveman Woodman dancing his way just out of reach of the flashlight wielding ushers.

A trio of new tracks leading off with “Vince Taylor”, about French Valerie who gave Ant his own gold plated chain as a gift, followed by “Stay in the Game” are nearly sewn together in performance except for the minimalist swampy guitar intro Ant provided for “Cool Zombie”; the debut single championing his old neighbor Ronnie B. who turned him onto authentic Country Music. This portion of the set very much
reeks in all the right ways of his downtime away from the music industry and letting himself be in the small town of Dayton, Tennessee for a spell.

“Strip” lightens up the room. Here when Ant playfully snaps free the top buttons of his billowing white shirt it is met with uproarious cheering. His guitar is back on for “Desperate Not Serious” off “Friend or Foe” before three on the tree from his debut record “Dirk Wears White Socks”. “Cleopatra” mounts Ant at the front of the stage leaning on his knee and scanning the room nodding rhythmically as from a ships
mast. After what happened at the Wire show a few weeks back here in Detroit where over nostalgic fans harassed the band (or tried to by chanting “One! Two! X! U!” and the band finally retorted “One! Two! FUCK YOU!”) I can’t imagine anyone not getting the Adam Ant they wanted tonight when the band slams into “Never Trust A Man With Egg On His Face” then quickly into “Zerox” with Ant gracefully punching
the air to the cymbal crashes.

“Viva Le Rock” spikes in and churns up the room dancing again. Mind you the The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse nor Ant have paused for more than seconds between songs if even that. When they do break it is briefly to introduce the band, and they all take a much needed pull from their respective cups before slamming back into the set with “Antmusic”. When “Goody Two Shoes” clicked in Renee Allen
leaned over and said “On this one I kinda miss the horns”. For the most part up until this point I didn’t notice so much the instrumental embellishments missing from the stripped down presentation as they were being quoted melodically by the guitarist as the bassist riffed away. Yet as the night marched on you did start to pick out the machinations that drove the band. Especially the Metal tinged guitar hysterics shredding along side a double down rhythm section. Not unlike some of Iggy’s former touring bands before a reunited Stooges. Another from the first album, “Car Trouble” dances us into “Prince Charming” for the set closer and living up to the title of that song it is clear “The Blue Black Hussar” is in the building. He watches the
light in the eyes of those before him as He turns and rides away with his Lovely Posse.

Comparative to the perpetual motion of the entire evening their absence from the stage is brief before Ant emerges, his mighty hussar headdress still in place but stripped down to a sleeveless black shirt. Matching his band mates in their black jeans and alternating black and white sleeveless garments. Not quite an uniform but
an androgynous code. You can see the youth still in the man who was recently carded at 58 years old trying to buy beer in a Kentucky gas station. The Lovely Posse starts the march again with “Press Darlings” right into obscuro “Lady/Catch A Falling Star”. The black Les Paul is back on Ant’s shoulder when he starts strutting out the chords to “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” by T. Rex and the band claws right into
it. You can see where Marc Bolan and Adam Ant have more common ground than one may notice. Where Bolan Called on the Star Children it was Ant who Gathered the Wandering Tribes to dance with the lights in the skies. For me Adam Ant can fall between Eagles of Death Metal and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as far as showmanship, literate content and raw but playful sexuality. Though the “The Blue Black Hussar” may be the immediate manifestation of Ant’s wounded healer; closing the procession tonight with “Physical (You’re So)” from “Kings of the Wild Frontier” reminds me that he is still of “A Wild Nobility” none the less.

“We've been rolling around in the Stooges' remains like a dog at the beach who's found a dead fish.” - AN INTERVIEW WITH MUDHONEY’S STEVE TURNER BY MCB's JEFF HOWITT with live photos from Magic Stick Detroit

Live shots from Brian Rozman Photography
Magic Stick Detroit - 8/30/13

“We've been rolling around in the Stooges' remains like a dog at the beach
who's found a dead fish.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH MUDHONEY’S
STEVE TURNER BY JEFF HOWITT

MCB: One of the earlier shows I saw you had Laughing Hyenas as one of the openers.
At the time I only knew of Negative Approach or John Brannon by name but it introduced me to Michigan Punk. Do you often search out particular bands when you tour?

Steve: We try to get some of our friends on the bill wherever we go, since ALL of our friends are in Kick-Ass bands.

MCB: Even though a single like “Touch Me, I’m Sick” is held as the Grunge era’s “New Rose”, do you think in context if that title didn’t get attached to that time period would you consider yourself ultimately more rooted in Garage Rock?

Steve: When we started we were pretty sure we were a Punk Rock band.
A Grungy Punk Rock band.

MCB: Early write ups on the band you guys would mention The Stooges and The MC5. Even tongue and cheekily referencing “the High Society” speech in Revolution. I feel for a certain kid growing up in the late 80’s/early 90’s music like yours made it all right in Michigan to finally
celebrate and embrace those bands stylistically and not just as homegrown cult heroes but influential in other music scenes. Do you see part of your musical journey in a Lenny Kaye/Thurston Moore record collecting/scholarly kind of way where you are exploring culturally as well as adding to it them?

Steve: Around 1990, we did a bunch of Punk/Hardcore covers and slowly released them as b-sides, split singles, etc. We were on a mission to remind people of all these great bands from that era, especially since the Grunge thing was starting to get so big and as you might recall, we thought
of ourselves as a Punk Rock band. The Stooges and MC5 are such an obvious influence on everyone, most definitely ourselves. We've been rolling around in the Stooges' remains like a dog at the beach who's found a dead fish.

MCB: Lo & Behold Records & Books owner Richie Wolfheil will kill me if I don’t ask this.
Have you ever heard of been to the Stooges Wax Museum?

Steve: I think Mark has...

MCB: What on a personal level have been the most important couple albums to the Band?

Steve: Our newest record is The Greatest Record since “Never Mind The Bollocks”.

MCB: I must say you’ve always had such great distinctive digs and tone.
What drew you to March to Fuzz so to speak?

Steve: Happenstance, and a love of The Mentally Ill 7" "Gacy's Place". My coworker at a Japanese restaurant gave me a Superfuzz box in 1983 because I told him I was having a hard time getting my Peavey guitar to sound distorted and cool. He asked what distortion box I was using and I
didn't know what he was talking about. I plugged it in and the clouds parted, angels sang, etc.

Watch “I Like It Small” now
Mudhoney’s Vanishing Point, the band’s excellent 9th album, is out on CD, LP, and digitally worldwide via Sub Pop.  The 10-track album is led by the singles “The Only Son of the Widow from Nain” and “ I Like It Small”, along with highlights “What to Do with the Neutral,” and “Douchebags on Parade.”

Mudhoney have also premiered a hilarious (& claustrophobic) new video for “ I Like It Small” with SPIN.com. The clip, directed by Carlos Lopez (Unnatural Helpers, The Intelligence), takes it cues from the song’s lyrical content (“Intimate settings”; “Dingy basements”) and sees the band in a practice space that becomes increasingly cramped, when suddenly all hell breaks loose. SPIN says of the clip, "What seems like an ordinary performance clip quickly evolves as various props and people are used to illustrate Arm's points along the way, with an especially gross shout-out to GG Allin followed by a handful of wardrobe changes, one bona fide pants-ing, and a very tiny piano solo”

25 years in, Vanishing Point decisively affirms that, even in an age where only the newest of the new can survive (and even then, only for a few weeks at best), Mudhoney still have plenty to say and more to offer. These are songs written from the rare vantage point of a band who went through the rock n’ roll
meat-grinder and not only lived to tell such a tale, they came out full of the wisdom and dark humor such a journey provides. Vanishing Point is filled with dread, psychoanalysis and Nuggets-on-fire riffs; the sort of real, uninhibited rock music that is harder and harder to locate these days.
With Vanishing Point, Mudhoney makes it easy.

NEW iOS APP from the DFT at the DIA

Detroit Institute of Arts announces new Detroit Film Theatre
features schedule, ability to buy tickets

August 28, 2013 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) announced a new Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) app available for iPhones that features the DFT schedule, Crystal Gallery café menu, and information about past DFT movies. Users can also purchase tickets and add movies to their calendars.

The app also links to the DIA’s mobile website, and has information on how to become a member of Friends of Detroit Film Theatre, an auxiliary that supports DFT initiatives.

The upcoming season focuses on animated films, many in conjunction with the exhibition Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, which opens Oct. 5. These include a series on the history of animation from the early 20th century to today’s computer-generated effects. The new season also offers a mix of new and classic films in a variety of genres. A highlight of the season is D.W. Griffith’s 1916 epic film Intolerance, which many critics consider one of the most influential movies of all time.

UPCOMING: "String Up the Moon" @ PuppetART Theater 5-8 Sept

They had me at "a theatrical sonata of dreams and madness." I'll be there on the 6th.

September 14: Michigan Legacy Art Park - Frohlich Amphitheater

September 20-21: Jam Handy - Detroit Design Festival (tickets here)

September 21: Special performance with Russian tea afterparty at the Jam Handy: $25

After last summer’s sold-out show The Mute Quire, Fratellanza creates a new production for September 2013. String Up the Moon looks into the human heart and finds two men wrought by desire. A lowly government clerk lusts up the ladder of the Russian civil service. A brilliant musician murders his friend and idol, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and justifies his act on cosmic grounds. These tales meet to form a theatrical sonata of dreams and madness.

Fratellanza’s ensemble from across the arts adapts two Russian tales, “The Diary of a Madman” by Nikolai Gogol and Aleksandr Pushkin’s “Mozart and Salieri.” Three performers translate the poetry and movement of Gogol and Pushkin. Jazz musician Michael Malis composes an original score. All performed in a playground world created by visual artist Reed Esslinger.

String Up the Moon will premiere at PuppetART Theatre in Detroit, September 5-8. The show then travels to northern Michigan for outdoor performances September 12-14. Finally, the show returns to Detroit as a unique theatrical component of the 2013 Detroit Design Festival, playing at the historic Jam Handy building on September 20 and 21. Following the performance on Saturday, September 21, as a special Design Festival event, there will be a late-night Russian Tea for audience and artists to talk and drink, as Russian animation streams on the walls.

Call for art: DAMNED VI

Deadline September 15
DAMNED VI - An Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness
 and Formal Masquerade Ball
October 24/25/26 2013 - Detroit
Tangent Gallery / Hastings St Ballroom

Within the word “damned”, it is easy to envision devils, Hades and hellfire. However, damnation may also reflect the eternal condemnation of self and the subtle abuse of one’s mind against itself. It may reflect the emotional trappings within the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps the immeasurable tendrils that bind us to our deepest longings or deprivations.

DAMNED is an exhibition of those extraordinary artists who know that without darkness, there is no light, that beauty does reside within the repulsive and enlightenment within our darkest hours. This art may be the one true reflection of self that make us balanced within our personal damnations…or possibly it is an expressive visual therapy…or simply a sign that there is something inexplicably damaged inside without comparison.

Artists of all mediums from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit their work for DAMNED. There are no restrictions on genre or content but the more deeply personal and powerfully introspective, the better.

It is free to submit.  For further details and to submit your work for review, please visit "www.thatdamnedshow.com/call".  Submission deadline is September 15 2013.

ADAM ANT SHOW REVIEW TORONTO: Get to the show tonight in Detroit!

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog

Wild At Heart

Just had a wonderful must needed weekend in Toronto. Work has been hectic and things at home have been up and down and it was nice to get away. I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Brandtford which had a great heated pool which felt great though I was a bit disappointed it didn't have a fridge or continental breakfast like some of the other places in that area. Still, a nice heated pool goes a long way. Nighttime traffic was a bit of a bitch. They do most of there construction overnight when the traffic is the lightest but it can still be super busy. I hit about 5 major construction area hold ups over 2 nights which gets old fast because it is hard to bypass them. Still, the cost saving being just outside the city is worth it.

I saw Adam Ant with opener Prima Donna at the Harborfront in Buffalo the first night. They are playing tomorrow at the Scottish Rite Cathedral at the Masonic Temple. I was a huge fan of Adam in the 80's. Prima Donna is a serviceable band that has a nice glam rock feel though it is Adam Ant and all his costumes that you will want to see. While it was nice hearing songs like "Desperate Not Serious" and "Wonderful", as well as some new selections, I was a bit disappointed in the show esp while loving "Goody Two Shoes", it just wasn't as fun live as I thought it would be live. That is what you get sometimes with older acts sometimes. It wasn't "Flock Of Seagulls" bad but definitely not "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds" good but somewhere in between. As a fan who had never seen him before, it was a good distraction for a free show and I'm glad I got him off my musical bucket list. He also has 2 great drummers, esp the sexy Jola who was worth seeing by herself (wish I had gotten a good picture of her). Here are some pics of both.

I also checked out the Birthday Massacre at the Revival which was part of the Rue Morgue after party for the Fan Expo. They were sponsored by Kraken Rum which was pretty good stuff and they had a costume party hosted by actors Ken "Dawn Of The Dead" Foree and Tristan "American Mary" Risk. Birthday Massacre came on stage a bit late and the London, ON band put on a great, high-energy show fronted by some nice vocals by lead singer Chibi. There last 2 albums have reached some success internationally and they are becoming a nice band so it was good to see them in their own backyard. If you like bands like a mix of the Cure or Mindless Self Indulgence, this is a band you might want to check them out (enjoy the video below).

The collection will feature ‘Los Angeles’, ‘Wild Gift’, ‘Under the Big Black Sun’ and ‘More Fun in the New World’, two of which appear on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The L.A. punk scene in the late 70s saw its share of greatness, but few acts were as talented as the now world-class, live, rock & roll band X. Their 2008 “13-31” Tour across the U.S. was truly something special, celebrating the band’s 31st anniversary. 2009 shaped up to be just as amazing for the veteran rockers, with appearances at SXSW and Coachella Festivals, along with their own “X – TRL” Tour, where fans to helped select each night’s set list.  In 2011, X celebrated the 31st anniversary of the legendary album, Los Angeles, one that not only defined their career, but an entire musical era as well. The band also celebrated the re-release of their landmark award winning rock-umentary, X: The Unheard Music.

The original line-up of X remains John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and D.J. Bonebrake.
