This past weekend saw the return of the Concert of Colors to Detroit's Max M. Fisher Music Center, normally home to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. MCB's Andrew Bender was all over the place so much that the DSO docents were ready to make him an honorary volunteer.
This year's Concert of Colors featured indie rockers Yo La Tengo and the Don Was Super Session II with single song performances by Sir Mack Rice (Mustang Sally); Amp Fiddler; Scott Morgan’s Powertrane; Question Mark (96 Tears); Thornetta Davis; Teegarden & Van Winkle (God, Love and Rock & Roll); Blanche; Gorevette (Amy Gore and Nikki Corvette); The Go; The Upscale; The Layabouts; and Mick Bassett and the Marthas. Seeing Mustang Sally and Respect Yourself performed by creator Mack Rice with Thornetta Davis was pretty remarkable, as was the Super Session finale of Teegarden & Van Winkle's performance of God, Love, and Rock & Roll, the 2nd half of which the entire Super Session ensemble came out to sing. Closing out the first night was the irie rhythms of Roots Vibration who had a lot of butts shakin at the Diversity Stage. Sunday's line up included performances by soul legend, Aaron Neville, also reprising his appearance from a couple of years ago. Also, recent notable Vieux Farka Toure, a West-African blues musician and son of legendary bluesman Ali Toure. Closing out the night was an energetic performance Nathan & the Zydeco that had a dance floor full of couples moving to the southern tunes.
