Warm Days, Cool Music!
Jazz On The River welcomes families and groups, so bring a blanket, sit on the arena hill and spend a warm day with some cool music! This year’s lineup is a great mixture of Smooth Jazz, Pop, World and R&B sensibilities, in an idyllic setting on the Detroit River. The 2009 Jazz On The River makes the weekend of August 1-2 a don’t miss cultural event in one of Wayne Counties most beautiful parks, the gem on the Detroit River, Elizabeth Park in Downtown Trenton.

The Music!
This year’s headliners include ace pianist, Alex Bugnon, woodwind virtuoso, Nelson Rangell, and the sensuous saxophone triumvirate, Gentlemen Of The Evening, featuring Michael Lington, Marion Meadows and Paul Taylor. Other headliners includes, Saxophonist Randy Scott and premier bassist, Terrance Palmer which round out the main performers.
Other performers include, Angelo Primo and Kimmie Horne, Lola Morales who grabbed 3 Detroit Music Awards this year for her exotic mix of latin jazz, Soul and trip-hop. The sensuous sounds of Modern Tribe featuring Chuck and Gwen Scales, vocalist, Shiron Denise & Point Blank, Jesse Palter, and this years winner of Jazz Café’s, Discovery Series.

The Fun!
Along with the music from the main stage, Music Hall presents an expanded Educational Tent with an amazing array of performers and artists to educate, entertain and amuse “kids” of all ages. Everything from a puppet-making workshop and arts and crafts for kids, to Yoga, storytelling, dancing poets and clowns with balloons, this years Education Tent promises to be great fun for everybody! Legendary poet M.L. Liebler will preside over a poetry and Blues Workshop as well as the Rev. Robert Jones & Sister Bernice Gospel Deep River Blues for kids, Joanne K. Story Teller, Marge Prezzato, and Michael Jones The Dancing Poet, plus much more fun stuff!

There will be food and drink vendors for every taste, as well as a full compliment of alcoholic beverages available along “Vendors Alley”.

The Performers:

ALEX BUGNON
Alex Bugnon has created one of the most recognized styles in today's contemporary jazz piano. It is a sultry mixture of contemporary jazz, funk, and R&B with hints of gospel. In 1985 he moved to New York where he spent four years working as a session musician and touring with urban and jazz luminaries such as Patti Austin, Freddie Jackson, James Ingram, Earth Wind and Fire, and Keith Sweat.

NELSON RANGELL
Jazziz magazine writes that Nelson Rangell is "an artist of depth, a master of song, and an improviser non pareil." The Times of London notes "his extraordinary facility on a range of instruments and his undoubted virtuosity," adding that Nelson is "one of fusion's most accomplished exponents." Rangell is one of the most exciting and diverse performers in the genre, equally adept at soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone, as well as being a genuine virtuoso on flute and piccolo.



Gentlemen of the Evening Sunday, August 2
Featuring: PAUL TAYLOR
Expanding upon the sensuous and romantic smooth jazz vibe that has made him one of the genre's most dynamic saxophonists, Paul Taylor makes his fourth Peak Records release a true Ladies' Choice; creating his most soulful instrumental tracks ever and keeping company with three of today's most acclaimed female R&B vocalists-Regina Belle, La Toya London and Terry Dexter.


MICHAEL LINGTON
With his debonair looks, charm, and charisma to burn, MICHAEL LINGTON defines the contemporary jazz experience. Since the late 90s, he has scored hit after Top Ten hit while seducing fans with passionate performances that turn sax into a celebration of love and life. Fresh off the success of A Song for You, the prolific sax-man's dynamic, critically acclaimed collection of 70s pop covers featuring lush arrangements and a full orchestra.
& MARION MEADOWS
He began playing the clarinet and studying classical music at the age of eight. In high school, Meadows began to play the soprano saxophone and played tenor through most of his college years. Meadows collaborated up with numerous artists and musicians in the 80s, recording or performing over the years with Brook Benton, Eartha Kitt, The Temptations, Michael Bolton and Angela Bofill.


RANDY SCOTT
Saxophonist and composer Randy Scott began his career with some of today's top jazz stars, including Nancy Wilson, Ronnie Laws and the group Hiroshima.
A record producer, composer and musician proficient on many musical instruments, Randy Scott has performed and/or recorded with Michael Powell, J. Moss & Paul Allen (writers and producers for Boys II Men, Brittany Spears, N’Sync and others), Grover Washington, Jr., Fred Hammond, The Clark Sisters, Rance Allen, Dietrich Haddon, Men of Standard, Kirk Franklin, Norman Brown, Angela Bofield, Marion Meadows and many other artists on almost every major recording label.

Modern Tribe featuring Gwen & Gwen Scales
This creative duo brings to the music scene many years of experience, both in live performance and recordings. Gwen sings and writes and Charles writes, plays keyboards and is a musical arranger and producer. Both Charles and Gwen have toured worldwide and chose to make Detroit their home because as they put it, “we’re family centered and Detroit is where our families reside. The duos style is an ambrosia of mellow and romantic music, highlighted by Gwen Scales evocative voice.


Terrance Palmer
He’s played on the stages of Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, South America, New Zealand and all throughout the United States. He’s played for nearly every major Gospel artist who has ever recorded. He’s won Grammy, Stellar, Dove and Soul Train music awards. He’s renowned bass guitarist Terrance Palmer.
Palmer was on stage with the likes of legendary artists Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin; while adding his rhythmic blend on albums for the gospel great Thomas Whitfield. Jazz, R &B and Gospel are all a part of this talented bassist, composer and producer’s musical mélange.

Angelo Primo
When his six-year-old friends were building Lego structures and joining sports teams, Angelo Primo was building his musical career. One year later, when he was seven years old, Angelo was performing on the Ed Sullivan television show, and recorded his first album for Capitol Records, in 1971. This accomplished guitarist has brought his diverse musical background to studio session work with various jazz/gospel artists such as Anita Baker, Fred Hammond and the Winans

Lola Morales
The San Francisco born singer/songwriter has traveled the world, from Ecuador to Tokyo, London to Detroit, creating a rabid fan base who just can’t get enough of Morales’ hybrid of Latin Jazz, Soul and Trip-Hop. Lola won 3 Detroit Music Awards in 2009 including her first full-length offering, “Write My Story”, which was produced by the Al Sutton who has also produced Kid Rock .

Kimmie Horne
Having been compared to such legendary artist as, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne, KIMMIE'S performances revitalizes their collective spirits. She has the sass of Shirley Bassey, the sensuous whisper of Sade, the octane drive of Josephine Baker and the sultry jazz interpretations of the great ones like Phyllis Hyman, Nina Simone.
