I got home from work the other day and there was a nice care package from Columbia Records waiting of my stoop. Enlcosed was a copy of the Special Edition of MGMT's new album, Congratulations. The packaging of the cd itself was quite peculiar. It included a custom coin, 36 page booklet, and scratch off cover. I did not scratch the cover off as to not tarnish any value the cd may attain in years to come. So here's what it looks like scratched off

All in all the music of the CD is pretty boring. It's MGMT embracing their pigeonholing of being the noveau psychedelia. The sound and feel is reminiscent of third rate Syd Barrett authored Pink Floyd disc. They lost or stripped away all the catchy fun songs that intrigued me with the first album. I'm not surprised, though, as most bands' follow ups to a critically acclaimed album are shitty. For example: Franz Ferdinand, Fleetwood Mac, The Horrors, etc. So I would suggest torrenting this album or burning it from a friend. It does nothing but tarnish the previous efforts from a diminishing band.

If you would like something revued by the legendary -jr, feel free to mail hard-copies to 11859 Sycamore, Plymouth, Mi. 48170....and I am partial to vinyl.
