PHOTOS: Burton Theatre Outdoor BBQ Doublefeature by SamirM

MCB is in a constant state of growth and last week was no exception as we added another fine young contributor to our inclusive ranks sending SamirM out on his 1st MCB Assignment to check out the Burton Theatre's 1st of a monthly outdoor BBQ Double feature

On the last Saturday of every month this summer the Burton Theater on Cass will open its backyard for vintage movies and a barbeque. The month of May featured Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and Xanadu, movies that opened and closed 70s film in America. Great choices, they were hard to take seriously and still good enough to hold attention.

I showed up around 11 to find a crowd relaxing on blankets and lawn chairs, silent but for the occasional bursts of laughter. The people at Burton throw a great party, they supplied a grill with great food, a projector on a car about as old as the movies it was playing, and no real distractions or signs of bothersome management.

Perhaps spurred by the movies themselves, the lot behind the Burton theater, while the scent of burgers, booze and tall weeds drifted amidst the crowd in the night, seemed to revive some part of an older, more relaxed culture in Detroit
