So Fur is releasing a new EP this weekend and they were nice enough to forward me a preliminary copy. Entitled Devastate The Details, the new EP progresses Fur's sound in a bit of a different direction. Instead of recording track by track, the band decided to record several in-studio live sessions to ensure the listener shapes how intense their live show is. It totally works. Some of my biggest trivial annoyances with the first EP is that it resonated as an over-produced corporate studio record, whereas Devastate The Details is lo-fi and a bit muddy. I like the fact that you have to strain to pick out the individual guitar and synth parts that are so often intertwined they are very difficult to disseminate. Also, the vocals are not at the forefront as with the previous EP. They are moreso just another element in the grande scheme of each composition. Where Fur's first EP seemed to be a collection of songs, the new EP is more of one long orchestrated movement. It's more on consistent peice than a group of singles. With only six songs, its doesn't take you that long to experience it fully. I really like the direction this band is heading and can't wait to see what their full length sounds like which is due out in the first half of 2011.
