CLAUDE VONSTROKE-DIRTY BIRD/MOTHERSHIP/TECH HOUSE-SAN FRAN

What started as a fake name and small booking at a friend's birthday party has spiraled into an international DJ career for Claude VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw.) One night in San Francisco after a long night of partying, Barclay and his friends began to make up fake European DJ names. Just kidding around, Barclay came up with “Claude VonStroke.” It ended up sticking after someone at the party booked him to DJ and used the new moniker on the flyer.

Raised in the suburbs Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw fell in love with the beat by listening to popular broadcasts of the Electrifying Mojo’s Midnight Funk Association on local radio. At age 16, after mastering the small 4-track recorder used at his high school, Barclay and good friend Jamie Osborne looked through the phone book and visited Juan Atkin’s fledgling Metroplex recordings. They tried unsuccessfully to convince Atkins to hire them as sound engineers and music producers. Little did they know, Mr. Atkins would soon go on to become the godfather of techno.

After University in New York and a 4 year diversion in Hollywood working as an assistant on a series of big budget feature films, Barclay moved back to Detroit and re-discovered his passion for electronic music. He was initially inspired by listening to drum n’ bass mix tapes from the UK. He built a massive live rig of synthesizers and samplers and played live at local Poor Boy underground warehouse parties until he lost all of his music in an electrical outage.

One year later, Barclay re-located to San Francisco and decided to merge his passion for music and film by releasing Intellect, a six hour DVD package, self-directed and produced, covering the worldwide electronic music scene and including interviews with over 35 top producers and legendary DJs such as Derrick May, Swayzak, Derrick Carter, Dubfire, and Theo Parrish. The main goal of the “Intellect” project was to make an informative DVD that could help DJs advance their careers in electronic music. The result was Crenshaw taking lessons from his own DVD by starting a record label called “dirtybird” and a production career under the name Claude VonStroke.

Since 2005, dirtybird has carved out a niche as a premiere American tech funk label and has released over 20 EPs. Claude VonStroke’s very first record, “Deep Throat,” was a major hit of 2005. The success of the single was followed up by “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?,” another international hit championed by Richie Hawtin who called it the “best track of 2006” in DJ magazine. Soon after that Claude released his full-length debut album, “Beware of the Bird” to outstanding reviews, further establishing him as an original talent in the underground. Since then, he has recorded over 25 remixes for a range of commercial and underground artists from Indy rock group “The Rapture” to Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson.

UMEK-TECHNO-SLOVENIA

Born in 1976, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Uros Umek began DJing in 1993. He and his friends were the pioneers of dance music in Slovenia, and between them they were responsible for putting on the first large scale parties in Slovenia. The result has been that Umek is Slovenia’s most famous DJ, and techno is Slovenia’s favourite form of music. He is currently working with his own Consumer Recreation and Recycled Loops (with Valentino) labels, as well as releasing tracks on Tortured (as Mumps), Electrix (as Zeta Reticula), Planet Rhythm, Audio and Missile. His current style is the combination of many different roots, which the more long term Umek fans may recognise. Starting with a rough, uncompromising edge he quickly built a reputation in the studio. However, more recently he has moved towards a funkier sound with his massive Mumps release on Tortured in 2000. His dedication and impressive work rate have led to his studio skills being increasingly called with a wealth of successful releases under his belt,THIS SHIT WILL BE BUMPIN.

Shpongle-Twisted Records/Coast II Coast Entertainment UK

Simon Posford and Raja Ram are Shpongle, a psychedelic ambient project formed in 1996 after they met at Butterfly Studios in Brixton, South London. Simon was working on Purple Om and Raja Ram was working with Graham Wood on The Infinity Project. The two went to the Glastonbury festival and decided to write something downtempo after their experience and Shpongle was born.

The Shpongle sound is a mix of mainly eastern ethnic samples and western contemporary psychedelic synth music. Posford is responsible for the synth and studio work while Raja Ram contributes with flute arrangements and creative sensibilities.

Shpongle's full-length debut album, Are You Shpongled?, was released in 1998. The high sound quality, successful mix of samples, instruments and synths along with the story and progress of the music through the album made it one of the most cutting edge releases of that time.

Shpongle have since put out 4 acclaimed and well received albums. Most recently their latest album Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland was released last year to much acclaim and worldwide psychaedelic approval.

FRANKIE BONES-SONIC GROOVE-BROOKLYN

Frankie Bones is an American techno and house music disc jockey from New York City. He is best known for bringing the rave culture to the United States after playing at a hangar party in the UK during 1989. Frankie Bones, the first American DJ to play these raves, is considered to be 'The Godfather of American Rave Culture'.

He got his first inspiration from his father's vast record collection after his father was murdered. Later on, after he had begun producing records, he was offered a gig to play for 5,000 people in England called "Energy" on the strength of his compositions. As the event started on August 26, 1989, the projected attendance had gone through the roof and Frankie played to 25,000 people while the sun came up. At this event, a fight broke out and Frankie got on a speaker, screaming at the fighters, "If you don't start showing some peace, love, and unity, I'll break your fucking faces". With the subsequent discussion of this event on the Usenet newsgroup alt.rave, Respect was added to the three virtues Frankie was speaking of, creating the hippie-esque raver credo of PLUR: Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect.

Being profoundly moved by the experience, he brought it back to Brooklyn in the form of his series of Storm Raves. The Storm Raves events began with only a few hundred people in attendance growing to over 5,000 where the likes of Josh Wink, Doc Martin, Sven Vath, DJ Keoki and Richie Hawtin were able to launch their performances into international careers. The Berlin Love Parade, which is generally considered to be the largest rave in the world, named its 1991 and 1992 Parades after well-known compositions by Frankie Bones.

Taking his turntablism skills and mixing Detroit Techno music with Miami Bass music, and new sound was born, Ghetto Tech. DJ PSYCHO (aka Norman Beatz) - Detroit Techno Militia/Bang Tech 12/Irrational Muzikwerx - Detroit, MI
The first thing that you notice about DJ Psycho (Dezi Magby) when he plays is that he pays absolutely NO attention to the rules. Genres? Mere suggestions. Somehow he ties everything together quicker than your brain can process the method. He engages the audience in a sort of willful combat for the soul of the party. leaving you at once satisfied and begging for more. Musically knowledgeable with a flair for the dramatic, Psycho bridges the gap between the technical aspects of being a DJ and the stage antics of a rock star. He is to be seen as well as heard...and not many DJs have that sort of controlled chaos as their calling card these days. He is at once a throwback and the wave of the future.
