THIS WEEKEND: Rocky Horror at Meadow Brook

I saw this live production at Meadow Brook a couple of years ago with one of my older sisters. I knew she hadn't seen the movie, but I didn't realize she knew NOTHING about the story/production. While we were angling for parking, we saw a little cluster of fans walking in, in costume. I saw her jaw drop, and the unmistakable "what have I gotten myself into?" look freeze her face. Never mind the fact that the production was really great; it was worth worth it, just for that.
What I'm saying is, go, and dress up. Or dress up, and go.

This spectacular cult hit will feature the return of John Michael Manfredi, fresh from critically acclaimed performances in A Picasso and K2 at the Performance Network and a featured role in the film Game of Death with Wesley Snipes, in his multiple-award-winning role as Dr. Frank-n-Furter. Jason Richards, most recently seen starring in the smash hit “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Performance Network and Andrea Mellos straight from the successful Breaking Up Is Hard To Do at Meadow Brook Theatre reprise their roles of Brad and Janet. James Bowen, recently receiving a Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Fences at The Performance Network also returns to this cult classic as Dr. Scott and Eddie.

Other original cast members include such noted Detroit’s theatre professionals as David Regal, Jodie Kuhn-Ellison and Andrew Huff. Joining the cast this year is new comer Allyson Ortwein, direct from critical successes in Title of Show at the Ringwald Theatre and Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Lexington Music Theater.

A cult classic spoof of science-fiction movies, The Rocky Horror Show is famous for its audience participation and rock and roll music. Audience members are encouraged to ‘dress the part’ and “Time Warp” with the cast as they follow the innocent young lovers Brad and Janet through their adventure at the castle of the mysterious Dr. Frank-n-Furter. Outrageous and energetic, each performance features a costume contest with the winners joining the cast on stage for the grand finale. Don’t miss the show the Oakland Press named Best Musical of the Year and Between the Lines calls Sheer Fun!
