Wild At Heart

I wanted to start this week off with a write-up of my wonderful trip up north but I have been put in a bad mood trying to deal with an issue with the unemployment office which has taken way too much time and I’ll save the trip blog to a sunnier day. I hate getting out-of-date info from people and being made to think it’s my fault for getting the wrong info. I was told that there was a Pontiac Unemployment office but found out it was closed which got me to the Mt Clemens office too late to take care of my grievance. Not going to mention that I also found out the Livonia office is now closed also despite being on the list of open offices I got this afternoon. They also shortened their hours this week so they closed an hour earlier than last week. Since I got this info last week about their hours, it would’ve been nice to have been told this ahead of time. The worse thing is getting that look that says “you are annoying me and how is this my problem” look when I’m trying to vent a bit after spending 3 hours to accomplish nothing today (which is no different than the last 3 weeks) of trying to deal with what should be a 30 minute issue at best. Why should it take me over 10 hours of phone time and why can’t I get any return calls? That level of inefficiency just blows my mind.

I did however enjoy the DIY Festival last week in Ferndale and ran while I didn’t catch as many bands as I would have liked, I did run across American Mars which plays a sort of roots-influenced rock or what is referred to as Americana. They have been around since at least 1997, so it’s a shame it took me so long to find them. They have a nice clearly defined sound which reminds me a bit of a cross between Lyle Lovett and Yo La Tengo which doesn’t surprise when their steel guitarist and producer David Feeny also worked with Blanche and Loretta Lynn. This is a nice band to check out if you are looking for something unique on the Detroit music landscape. More info on band at www.americanmars.com.
