Wild At Heart

I can’t believe it has been a full week since I have been in NY and how quickly I have adapted to life back east. I also can’t believe I went a whole week without going to a concert and/or play. It has been at least a year since that has happened and it feels weird.

Speaking of not going to shows, here are a few coming up in the Detroit area for those lucky enough to be around a cool music scene.

Tuesday (10/19) – folk singer Arlo Guthrie @ the Ark (one of the few artists coming to my area in the next month or so that I hope to see), Drake (fresh off guest appearance with Eminem) @ Fox Theatre

Wednesday (10/20) – Dr Dog @ Crofoot, Irish music from Great Big Sea @ Michigan Theatre, local favs the Orbitsons @ Four Green Fields (Royal Oak)

Thursday (10/21) – Social Distortion @ Fillmore (I really wanted to go to this show)

Friday (10/22) – Eric Burdon and the Animals rock out @ Andiamo’s in Warren, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons @ Fox Theatre, Americana artists Blanche w/Duende! @ Magic Bag

Saturday (10/23) – folk rockers America @ Andiamo’s in Warren, get free burritos and pizza with local bands Zoos of Berlin, Satin Peaches, Secret Twins and Macrame Tiger @ Magic Stick

Sunday (10/24) – country bad boy David Allen Coe @ All Around Bar (Taylor), Grace Potter and the Nocturnals @ Crofoot, Roger Waters plays “The Wall” @ Palace Of Auburn Hills, The Script @ Royal Oak Music Theatre

Monday (10/25) – Gary Numan @ Crofoot (another show I would love to see), the wonderful Legendary Pink Dots @ Magic Stick

Here is a song from my artist of choice this week: The Anglo-Dutch experimental rock band, The Legendary Pink Dots, which formed in 1981. This song is “I Love You In Your Tragic Beauty” from their 1990 album ‘Crushed Velvet Apocalypse’ which blended experimental music with shades of psychedelic, gothic and progressive genres. The closest mainstream act that resembles the Dots is probably early Pink Floyd when Syd Barrett was lead singer though fans of Can and Neu! will also enjoy them.

For those with a bit of extra cash and a desire to benefit a good cause, you can go to see Kenny Loggins at this years “Stars Guitars” at Ford Community Center in Dearborn. The event is a family friendly annual benefit for the Charles A. Main, M.D. Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund of Beaumont Hospitals. The event (cost $75-125) includes strolling dinner, desserts, auctions and the concert. Visit website, www.starsguitars.org, to view the latest information on the event, buy tickets or see the autographed guitars available for auction. Among the artist guitars being auctioned are those by the Bare Naked Ladies, Cyndi Lauper, Buddy Guy, Cheech and Chong, surf guitarist Dick Dale, Green Day, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Kid Rock, Sting, Tears For Fears and the Offspring. There are guitars for every style including Christian (Amy Grant), country (Zac Brown Band) and kid rock (Miley Cyrus). I am open for the Cyndi Guitar for a Christmas present if anyone wants to get me something unique.

With the recent 2010 nominees for the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame released, including Detroit legend Alice Cooper, I thought it would be fun to put out a list of my top 10 acts which should be nominated for the hall. I will have this ready by next Monday so until then enjoy. If you are interested in the complete list of nominees, they are Neil Diamond, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Donovan, Tom Waits, Chic, LL Cool J, J Geils Band, Dr John, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro, Darleen Love, Joe Tex and Chuck Willis.

As of 2009, fifteen groups or solo artists, four non performers, and two sidemen who are connected with the Detroit area have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame including Detroit-native Bill Haley, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Jackie Wilson, the Supremes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Hank Ballard, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight & The Pips, John Lee Hooker, Wilson Pickett, Martha & The Vandellas, Little Willie John, Parliament-Funkadelic, James Jamerson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Bob Seger, Glenn Frey, Berry Gordy, Stooges and Patti Smith.
