Review:Timothy Monger: The New Britton Sound

Timothy Monger may be an unfamiliar name to you, but if you are associated with the wonderful sounds from Great Lakes Myth Society then you have encountered him as one of the key members. Over the past couple years Timothy has been carefully working on the tracks that make up "The New Britton Sound" with close friends in dank basements and old barns. "The Lark" kick's off the album with a deceptive upbeat track that's catchy and will get your toes tapping. The songs that follow are more somber, slower numbers giving "...New Britton" a quieter, serious tone.Using sparse instrumentation on most tracks, Monger makes up for it with quotable lyrics, flourishes of horns and emotional buildups like the one on "The Classics" that are never a let down. My favorite track is "Guitar Case," a song about how the guitar case is a device to get the girls and make people smile. "...New Britton" is good late night diving music to make you reflect back on your night and remember the good parts as well as the bad.

You can catch upcoming Timothy Monger shows at Woodruff's in Ypsilanti on June 24th and in Detroit and the Lager House on July 8th.
