Recap: Wanda Jackson at The Magic Stick

Wanda Jackson performed at The Magic Stick on June 29th, with The Deadstring Brothers, and Jessica Hernandez and The Deltas

This was the resheduled date, after Wanda Jackson had to cancel her appearance last month when her flight out of Oklahoma was canceled due to storms. It now became clear that Heath Haynes and the High Dollars, a last minute addition to the show Wanda didn't make it to, was actually the rest of Wanda's band.

I was expecting to see the place overrun with people in rockabilly outfits, but they only seemed to represent a fraction of who was there. The crowd overall seemed to be an eclectic mix of people, spanning from old men with long beards to teenagers.

Wanda liked to tell the audience stories between songs. She talked about when she used to date Elvis back in the 50's. She said, "Ladies, I know what you're going to ask. The answer is yes, Elvis was a good kisser". She talked about how she was convinced to go from country to rockabilly, back to country, and later to gospel music. She of course told a few stories about working with Jack White, including how he convinced her to record a cover of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good".

Her set list covered the gamut of her rockabilly, country, and even gospel eras. That gospel song wasn't just some boring yarn about salvation either, it had a good beat.
