Album Review: Danny Brown: XXX

In case you missed it, local rap/hip hop extraordinaire Danny Brown released his album XXX last week at the Fools Gold website. I gave it a listen today and I'm declaring it hip hop record of the year. It's got all the elements I look for in a killer hip hop drop, a unique voice that can be funny, menacing, trippy and dirty with tales of doing your best to make a dime or getting laid or high and probably both at the same time. Some of the better tracks include "Party All the Time" which offers a different take on the song Eddie Murphy sang about decades ago. Danny turns the theme upside down into a sad song about a girl blowing her life away. My favorite is "Scrap or Die" where Danny raps about the story we know all to well here in Detroit about a family that steals copper and metals to pay the bills. XXX ends with Brown in a fury about being 30 and making this his time to make it or break it. In my book Danny Brown's already made it, he just needs a few other people out there to recognize it. Be sure to download the record here.
