Much has been written about Amy Lavere’s new album, “The Stranger”. There was a break up, a band member leaving, and the death of producer Jim Dickinson. This might cause most to give up but that certainly wasn’t apparent in her live performance Sunday night at the Hotel Foster in Milwaukee. Playing stand-up bass, the set varied from jazzy bossa nova to dark and brooding Americana. “Red Banks”, from the Stranger album, was spooky and haunting, dripping with southern sweat. This was Louisiana swamp music at its best- thick and murky. The new lp’s opener, “Damn Love Song” appeared to be a little toned down compared to the album version, performed live was very swampy, dense with cynicism. A few of the more country type songs highlighted the stand-up bass, reminiscent of her days in Nashville, playing in the Gabe and Amy Show on Lower Broadway. I have heard comparisons made to Neko Case, which were evident tonight, but the country songs reminded me of Jeannie C. Riley. Many things may have happened to Amy Lavere during her career, but she continues to release strong, emotional records and perform great live shows. She performed her cover of Captain Beefheart’s “Candle Mambo”. It was strange to hear this version, with her playful voice, and unusual arrangements that seemed out of place with the rest of the show. I like the fact she seems to be taking some musical chances or she really likes Captain Beefheart.
