The Axis Mundi Collective is proud to present Axis Mundi Fest, a massive showcase of musical and visual artists representing the collective’s multifarious record labels. The event will take place on Friday, August 5 at the Sparklewood gallery in Detroit. Axis Mundi is currently comprised of Communist Day Care Center, Algae Records and Tapes, Forget Records, and Sonic Lullaby.

The collective was formed on the simple mission statement of artist success through artist collaboration, and its labels specialize in music ranging from lo-fi tape fuzz, to ambient shoegaze, to country rock.

On August 5, bands from each label will share the stage, powers combined into a truly eclectic musical soiree. The melancholy country grooves of DandyLyon Whine and the psychedelic instrumental onslaught of Dinosaur Monster will be on exhibit for Communist Day Care Center.
Forget Records has chosen Pupils, the brainchild of Marco Polio front-man Steven Michael Puwalski, who brings his high energy performance art to psychedelic grooves infused with New Wave and No Wave influences. Also presented by Forget is The Belle Isles, a new project of Richard Wohlfiel -- drummer of Mother Whale, multi-instrumentalist, accomplished DJ, and published poet -- who brings his literary depth and virtuosic scope to a new solo project.

Algae Tapes offers Lizzie Temple Black, a mysterious group of musicians who venture to the abstract and atonal, abandoning structure and coherency. Post Punk and free jazz sensibilities are also found in Sound and Fury, a stripped down trio who favor unpredictability and raw energy in their live performance.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Axis Mundi’s resident old school shoegazers, Sonic Lullaby, provide bands such as Kindle and Sea Turtle Restoration Project. Their heavy, churning, and often uplifting ambience provides an interesting counterpoint to some of the more high-octane performers. They will be performing on the third floor, hosting an ‘ambient room’ featuring other artists such as Ursus, Hedorah (a side project from members of Jura), and St. Zita.

The walls of Sparklewood will be occupied by the work of an equally diverse rogues gallery, including painter Alana Carlson, photographer Gabriel Banuelos, Christin Richards, Mike Ross, Eric Peiti, Steven Gamburd and others.
