MCB pick of the Week: Tony RōKō Solo Show - June 9th 6-11pm - The Birmingham Gallery

TONY RŌKŌ SOLO SHOW
THE BIRMINGHAM GALLERY
June 9, 2012
6:00-11:00pm

Detroit "Green Artist" Tony RōKō brings art and environmental awareness to Spain Elementary / Middle School inner-city students.
The childrens' creation to be completed on June 5th, will be featured, along with a solo show of RōKō's most recent artwork, at the new Birmingham Gallery grand opening on June 9, 2012, in Birmingham, MI.
The Spain student's project is in honor of June's African-American Music Appreciation Month.
The piece will adorn the Birmingham Gallery walls before it makes its way to its permanent home at the school.

The Spain Elementary/Middle School students will be using reclaimed paint to create this massive 7' x 8 1/2' tribute to Louis Armstrong
"Little Louis", on a "canvas" made entirely of repurposed pallets salvaged from abandoned local factories.

From the reuse of discarded materials to the narrative within the imagery, this artistic creation will send a positive message of overcoming adversity, following dreams, and protecting our environment, all within the framework of inspiring imagination and discovery of the arts.

RōKō's artwork can be seen at venues such as the Charles H. Wright Museum, the Motown Museum, the Michigan State Capital Building, and in various galleries across the country. Tony has also recently been featured in Ford Motor Company's new "Go Further" ad campaign. RōKō has been commissioned by many corporations including Ford, Coca-Cola / vitaminwater, The Dance Theater of Harlem, and VIBE Magazine, as well as having been a guest speaker at Michigan State University and a spotlighted artist at the last two International Auto Shows.  Tony has recently been selected to show at the prestigious NAC Gallery's grand opening, at their new Miami area location on June 2, 2012.  In addition, RōKō's work will be exhibited at The B.O.B. in association with September's 2012 ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI.  All of RōKō's creations are made from repurposed industrial materials.
