Concert Review: Mugen Hoso at the New Dodge Lounge in Hamtramck (8/18/12)

This summer music showcase featured three fine local acts: The Bobby Electric, Factory Girls, Hit Society and one act from Japan called Mugen Hoso. Unfortunately, I missed the first two acts, both of whom I've heard good things about.

As an avid fan of Japanese rock and punk music, I was looking forward to seeing Mugen Hoso's Detroit performance.

I arrived at the club just in time as Mugen Hoso was taking over the stage with their powerful high-energy show! This dynamic duo from Japan consists of guitarist Hiro (get it?) and drummer Taro. The band hail from Tokyo, Japan and have been around since 2010. This was their third tour of the United States and they made their Detroit debut at the New Dodge and they were a blast to watch! Their garage punk style of music and crazy stage acrobatics from guitarist Hiro, flailing around the stage and floor, was a true rock n' roll spectacle! The band urged the audience to sing along and join in the revelry.

Mugen Hoso are on an extended tour of the country until late September before heading back home to tour Japan for the remainder of the year; then on to destroy Europe in early 2013. The next day they played a show outside of the Rustbelt Market in Ferndale before traveling on to their next show in Chicago.

Headliners of the night were the new local band called Hit Society. Having to follow Mugen Hoso's set was no easy feat, but the band performed their own energetic set with equal aplomb. They surprised me with a high-octane cover of the Junk Monkeys' version of The Mutants' signature song, "So American."

Hit Society will be playing on Saturday, August 25th at PJ's Lager House on another fine bill with another great band Citizen Smile and more.
