Over 90 venues in 21 metro Detroit cities will participate in the 5th Edition of Detroit Gallery Week, which will run from Friday, Oct. 5 to Saturday, Oct. 13. Thousands are expected to attend openings, exhibitions and demonstrations at local galleries, museums and arts organizations that will showcase metro Detroit’s best contemporary art and artists.
Detroit Gallery Week will kick-off on Friday, October 5th in conjunction with the opening of DLECTRICITY, a free nighttime festive of Art and Light in Midtown curated by Art Detroit Now, and the Mid-America College Art Association Conference hosted at Wayne State University. 15 venues in Midtown, including Detroit Artists Market, Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), N’Namdi Art Center, Center Galleries at College for Creative Studies (CCS), Scarab Club and Re:View Contemporary will hold an art crawl, with a free shuttle service, from 7 to 10 p.m.
Marc Schwartz, Chair of Art Detroit Now sees these events as a positive sign for Detroit’s future. “Detroit Gallery Week and DLECTRICITY are part of a continued effort to have Detroit be an integral part of any conversation on contemporary art in America.” said Schwartz. “We now have over 90 venues, from the DIA to Pop-Ups spaces, showing the great art and artists we have in Detroit. Schwartz goes on to say that “We have tipped to scale. Not only are our young artists are staying here, there is an influx of artists from around the world coming here to be part of the city’s rebirth.”
Galleries new to this year’s event include the DC3 Accelerator Gallery, Red Bull House of Art, Salt & Cedar Letterpress, Signal Return Press and the Start Gallery in Detroit; Birmingham Gallery; Red Twig Gallery in Plymouth and Belian Art Center in Troy.
To support Detroit Gallery Week, Germack Coffee Roasting underwrote the cost of producing and distributing 10,000 Gallery Guides that will be available at each venue during the event.

- Padzieski Art Gallery in Dearborn “Society of Women Painters & Sculpters” reception from 6 – 8pm
- Work: Detroit “Stamina” reception and a performance by Anna Helgeson from 5:30 – 7:30
- Re: View Contemporary will host an Artist Talk and Video Screening by Ian Swanson on Friday, Oct 5 from 6-10pm.
- Wayne State University, in conjunction with their Mid-America College Art Association Conference, reception at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery from 6-9pm and the Art Department Gallery from 4-8pm.
- Ellen Kayrod Gallery “Clay at Wayne State University: A Multi-Generational View” reception from 5-8pm

- Russell Industrial Center open house from 2 to 11 including Michigan Hot Glass, Funnhouse Gallery, Dave Knoerl Studio, DCCP, Mark Maness, The Rockhouse, and Robert Stewart Photography and Detroit Industrial Projects.
- Detroit Contemporary closing reception for the “Home Show” from 6:30 – 12 Midnight
- River Gallery in Wyandotte opening for “Solinters and Paper Cuts” at 6pm.
- HATCH in Hamtramck open house from Noon to 9pm
- Pioneer Building open studio from Noon to 8pm. (An MCB Fave Location. A whole building converted to artists' studio. Has a more intimate feeling than the Russell, similar to the Scarab Club studios. Definitely a model that other studio conversions could use.)
