REVIEW & ILLUSTRATIONS: First Aid Kit live in Chicago by Von Ecker

Review and Illustrations By Von Ecker

First Aid Kit kicked off their largest tour yet in Chicago this past week playing a jam packed show at the Metro in Chicago. With a folk/ indie rock sound that is being popularized by bands such as Mumford and Son’s,Bon Iver, and Fleet Foxes. The duo comprised of sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg are no strangers to the windy city appearing at Lollapolloza this past summer. This week the band was back at it again showing Chicago that these Swede’s are not just festival filler.

The band first began getting exposure in 2008 on YouTube when they posted a video singing a cover of the song “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song” by Fleet Foxes. From there the duo began getting  air play at a Swedish Radio Station with their song “Tangerine”, which soon led to the release of their first LP “Drunken Trees”. Since then the group has toured all over Europe, the United States and Canada and are back on the road again to promote their 2012 album “ The Lions Roar ”.

After seeing them this past week it actually left me bummed that I didn’t get to see them while they were at Lolla, because these sisters really got there shit together. The music these two create is filled with stories about the complexities of life, religion and love lost, which all can relate to. Seeing the two on stage was like witnessing angels descend to earth and serenade the masses. The vocal harmony between the two sisters is amazing, and with tracks like “Emmylou”, “The Lion’s Roar”, “Wolf” and “King of The World” First Aid Kit is set to take America by storm. The band may be nothing more than obscure indie/folk right now but they’ll definitely be taking off in the not so distant future.

Although the group isn’t set to appear in Detroit in the near future they did play Ann Arbor this past weekend so keep an eye out for the duo because I don’t see these girls fading away anytime soon
