This was my sixth time seeing the Raveonettes play in Detroit, and as always, I was head over heels for them all over again after their show last night at the Magic Stick. Their openers, Melody's Echo Chamber, was a soft and sensual four piece from Paris with a Sundays-meets-Beach House sound that the audience was really into. The Raveonettes came on stage to an amped up crowd, and the energy only continued to soar through their performance. The set showcased both a number of new songs - "She Owns the Streets", "Curse the Night", "Young and Cold", and "The Enemy" off the just-released new album, Observator, and a number of old favorites from each of their past albums, like "Attack of the Ghost Riders", "Gone Forever" and "Love Can Destroy Everything".
The Raveonettes is consistently a beautiful marriage of '60s pop, garage surf and dark post-punk indie rock, but I think each album by the Raveonettes always shows another side of their personality and has a distinct sound and influences. Seeing them live is always a great night - their energy and the crowd's energy really feeds off each other, and they seamlessly mix songs throughout their discography into a perfect blend that seems customized just for that evening - there were two times that I actually thought a song that was starting was a new single, and later realized was from an older album, handpicked to support the feel of "Observator".
