Show Review: Live Nation's "Ones to Watch" Tour featuring Redlight King & Icon for Hire @ The Shelter Detroit 8-23-13

Detroit was dealt a King Friday night, a Redlight King. They headlined an amazing show Friday night at the Shelter, which also featured a high energy co-headliner, Icon for Hire.  Opening the show was local Detroit band False City. They brought an energetic early crowd to the show.  Following them bringing a solid mix of hip hop and rock was Big B, out of Las Vegas Nevada.

Icon for Hire was up next.  A female fronted high energy rock band out of Illinois.  They have spent the last 5 years touring heavily and have gained a solid following.  It showed at this show. Most of their fans worked their way to the front of the crowd singing the words to every song over their 55 minute set. Judging by the huge line to meet them after the show this band will be here to stay.

Headlining the Detroit show was Redlight King.  Fronted by Mark "Kaz" Kasprzyk out of Ontario Canada they feature a perfect mix of rock and a splash of hip hop.   After a very solid debut album titled "Something for the Pain" the band is set to release it's second album "Irons in the Fire" on September 10th.

They opened the show with "Comeback" a hard hitting song off the debut album which also appeared on the Avengers soundtrack.  Just a few songs later came the song that most would say put them on the map, a cover of Neil Young's "Old Man".  With Mr Young's permission this is by far one of the best cover songs to come out in the last decade. They obviously did him proud. The song peaked at number 17 on Billboard's Alternative Song Chart.

The energetic set continued with a mix of songs from the debut album including "City Life", "Built to Last", and "Underground".  The set included seven songs off the upcoming album including "Critical", "Bleed", "Redemption" (which is featured on the Iron Man 3 soundtrack), and the first single "Born to Rise".  They closed the show with their biggest hit "Bullet In My Hand" which peaked at number three on Billboards Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks.

Redlight King is one of those bands that will win you over with their live show.  A group full of energy led by "Kaz" and some of the most down-to-earth musicians out there.  If you have not seen them you need to soon while you have the chance to check them out at some small venues.   Years from now you will be thankful you did.

The new album "Irons in the Fire" will be available September 10th.  You can check out the first single "Born To Rise" available now on iTunes.
