Ian Hunter - Northern Lights Theater - Milwaukee, WI - October 3rd, 2013

On Thursday night, Ian Hunter played to a sold out audience at Potawatomi Casino’s Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee.  I apologize for lack of photos, but I was sitting in the back of the balcony.  At age 74, Hunter is showing no sign of old age or Rod Stewart syndrome (releasing an album of standards).  Instead he did what few people saw coming, played a show featuring Ian Hunter solo material and only a few Mott The Hoople songs.  This was not the same Hunter show I have seen in the past.  This reminded me of a traditional Americana music show with a little Springsteen swagger thrown in.  “Once Bitten Twice Shy” featured the classic Hunter bite and growl while “When I’m President” and “Ta Shunka Witco” represented the more Dylan side.  The first 90 minutes featured a few Mott hits like “One of the Boys” and “The Golden Age of Rock and Roll”, but it was the newer solo material that established Hunter can still release important and relevant sounding records.  He didn’t disappoint during the encores, first “All The Way From Memphis”, then during the second encore a medley featuring “"Knocking on Heaven’s Door/I Wish I was Your Mother/Ships/Roll Away the Stone/All the Young Dudes."  It would have been the perfect evening if only the nickel machines paid off.
