Big Dipper - Bottom Lounge, Chicago, March 23rd

Saturday night I made the 90 mile drive south to Chicago to see Big Dipper.  Playing at the Bottom Lounge, this was a rare Midwest appearance.  Big Dipper’s roots go back to 1979, the year The Embarrassment formed.  From Lawrence, Kansas they were perhaps the greatest pop band of all time.  Disbanding in 1983, Bill Goffrier moved to Boston, forming Big Dipper with Gary Waleik and Steve Michener (Volcano Suns) and Jeff Oliphant (Dumptruck).  If you are under 40 you need to look up these great bands.  After three releases, including one for major label Epic, the band broke up.  “Heavens” and “Craps” on Homestead Records are essential listening.  In 2008 they re-formed for shows while Merge Records released a fantastic 3 disc anthology “Supercluster”.  Now they are back with a new lp, “Crashes on the Platinum Planet” with Tom Brewitt replacing Mr. Michener.   I saw the Embarrassment reunion show in Boston in the late 80’s but had never saw Big Dipper.  Needless to say I was pretty dam excited about Saturday night.  And they did not disappoint.  Big Dipper sounded great with their dual guitar leads, playing jangly power pop with big hooks and melodies.  Early in the set they featured new song, “Lord Scrumptious” a catchy soon to be pop classic.  From “Heavens”, “Loch Ness Monster” (Gary on vocals) and “She’s Fetching” (Bill on vocals) sounded contemporary and vital with big hooks and edgy power pop punk guitars.  The highlight of the night for me was hearing “Younger Bums” even though they admitted they missed a line from the song.  This is the ultimate Big Dipper song, an intense anthem daring you to sing-a-long but filled with desperation.  They followed it with probably the crowd’s favorite of the night, “Faith Healer”.  This was big and raw, full of energy, intensity and screaming dual guitars.  The encore brought two more favorites, “Meet the Witch” and “Ron Klaus Wrecked His House” complete with an update from Mr. Klaus.  I don’t know if they are planning on recording more albums and continue touring, but for one night I couldn’t stop smiling.  I’m glad I finally had the chance to see Big Dipper.  I don’t think they will be playing the county fair circuit anytime soon, opening for Travis Tritt.

Detroit Derby Girls: Bouts 7 & 8

March 2, 2013. Bouts 7 and 8 of the Detroit Derby Girls' 2012-13 season.

Bout 9: Grand Prix Madonnas versus Pistolwhippers

The 1st jam of the night had Racer McChaseHer jamming for the Grand Prix Madonnas, and Lazer Beam jamming for the Pistolwhippers. On this jam, everything went the Pistolwhippers way. They not only stopped Racer from scoring, which doesn't happen often, but their blockers were also able to break apart and disperse GPM's blocker wall when their own jammer was approaching the pack. This was everything the rest of the league has been trying to do to GPM all season.

GPM immediately took the lead back in the 2nd jam when Lily I. Monster scored them 5 unanswered points. This was followed up by a huge play from Racer, when she scored 14 points, as Meli Ali of the Pistolwhippers spent most of the jam in the penalty box. Whatever was said on GPM's bench amongst the players after that 1st jam worked, and they were back to form.

The score was 27-8 in favor of GPM when they endured a scoreless streak from jams 7 through 11. The Pistolwhippers didn't make any big scoring drives during that streak, but they cut the deficit down to 27-26. Lily outscored Lazer Beam 14-7 in the 13th to widen GPM's lead again to 43-33. The Whippers would endure a scoreless streak of their own, and didn't score again until the 19th jam, and by that time GPM was ahead 79-34. Sam-I-Slam scored 9 points for the Whippers in the 20th jam, but the half still ended with the Grand Prix Madonnas ahead, 82-47.

The second half started slowly. A few points here, a few points there. The score started increasing dramatically in the 7th jam when Lily scored 15 for GPM, followed up by 15 from Racer in the 8th, and another 9 by Racer in the 10th.

Lazer Beam made a 14 point scoring run for the Whippers in the 16th jam, but they were still down 149-76. The Grand Prix Madonnas finished out the bout with a grand finale of scoring drives. Lily scored 10 in the 18th. Anomaly made the biggest scoring drive of bout when she scored 20 in the 20th, followed by 10 points from Lily in the 21st, and 9 by Cali Ente in the 22nd and last jam. Final score, 198-80.

Post-bout remarks from Captain Spanish Ass'assin and Co-captain Rocky Brawlboa of the Grand Prix Madonnas:
Detroit Area Dork: What are you thinking about the bout you just played?
Spanish Ass'assin: We're happy that we won, obviously, and went undefeated. We've got a lot of things that we've got to work on before we get to the championship bout.
Rocky Brawlboa: I totally agree. We have a lot of things we have to work on, but I think we're going to pull it together.
D: You didn't score anything in that first play. Were you worried at first?
S: We didn't come out as hard as we normally do. I don't know if people's heads just weren't in the game or what was going on. It definitely took some time to get in gear, and get our game going out. So I was a little nervous, I wasn't happy myself, as well as with how the whole team was playing together. We talked about it at halftime, pushed things around, and got going. Everyone was ready in the second half.
R: In our last bout we had really good momentum going. We had the lead the whole time, and this time they got the lead on us their first chance. It threw us off our game a little bit, but we brought it back at half time.
D: What do you think you got right tonight?
S: Well, I mean, we won, but...the thing that always keeps us together is our walls. I think our walls were not as tight and strong in the beginning, and we starting fixing that, and paying attention more, and trying to keep their jammers back, and giving our jammer a chance to get out. I think eventually we got our walls right. Our jammers were doing a phenomenal job. Those poor girls we getting the crap kicked out of them. They just kept going, and they were taking the hits. They have a tough job and they really pulled through for us.
R: Our walls were a little weak in the beginning. They threw a lot of jammers at us they I don't think we were expecting. We weren't expecting them to be as awesome as they were. A lot of Pistolwhippers' jammers were really well against us, and I don't think we were expecting that. Kudos to them. Uhura [Belle Death] was jamming, and it was like "Where did this come from?". There were a lot of things that threw us for a loop, but I think we brought it back together.
D: There didn't seem to be any controversies about offciating tonight. Do you think that the officiating was a little tighter?
S: I think that it's easy to blame things on the officials when you're out there and you're upset. No one really likes going to the box, but it is what it is. They're human beings, they make mistakes. They call as much as they can possibly call. A lot of times people get really mad, and they try to blame things on the officials. Then they go back and do footage review, then they realize "Oh, I really did do that, I really did make that penalty", and then they've kind of gotta choke down their ego a little bit, and understand that maybe they've just got to work on things, and get a little bit better. I think the guys did great tonight. They asked us at half time if there was anything that we weren't happy with, and we didn't really have anything to say to them. We were just glad that it seemed very consistent for both sides, and they were making calls. I didn't have any complaints.
R: You can never blame the officials for anything. Number one, they're are volunteers, who we need to play our game. Number two, like I said the last time, we're always evolving. We have a new ruleset this year. There were things that were called majors a few months ago that aren't majors any more. That doesn't bother me.
S: We're really happy with the officials.
R: You can never blame the officials. They know what they're doing. They do a great job all the time. There's some stuff that goes on that doesn't get called, and I think that might be like, "oh, just let them play". I get hit in the face, and nothing was called. I was a little angry about that, but it might not have been a penalty. I might have been in the wrong there. I wouldn't blame the officials for anything they do. I think they do their job, and I think it's a hell of a great job.
D: It's going to be GPM versus the Pistoffs for the championship bout again. How are you going to prepare for them?
S: We're going to do a lot of footage review. We're going to do footage review on them, and see what they've been doing well, and how they've been evolving through-out the year, and maybe things that they've changed up, and we're going to figure out how to counter that. We're also going to do footage review on us, and see what's not working well, maybe where some weaknesses are that we've got to work on. We're just going to come up with drills, and we're going to practice over, and over, and over again until we get it as perfect as we can before the championship bout comes around.
R: I totally agree. That's our game-plan. We're going to educate ourselves, then we're going to go and make a plan. Everyone on the team is on board, so we're going to do our best to win this championship.

Bout 10: Detroit Pistoffs versus Devil's Night Dames

After the most entertaining intro to a bout ever, the start of this bout was pretty lopsided. At the end of the 3rd jam, the Pistoffs were ahead 20-2. It wasn't until the 9th jam that the Dames started to close the gap. Rookie Catch La Fever made a 10 scoring run, and the deficit was only 27-21. Yo-yo, captain of the Dames, made a big 14 point play in the 12th jam, putting them ahead 39-29. The last place team from the prior season was now ahead of the defending champs.

The hopes for an upset were squashed a bit when Cookie Rumble, captain of the Pistoffs, made a 19 point play in the 15 jam. This gave the Pistoffs the lead again, at 48-45. We forget how fast things can change from one play to the next. The Dames then suffered a 5 jam scoreless streak to end out the half, down 48 to 73.

The scoreless streak for the Dames continued for the first 3 jams of the second half. They also didn't score from jams 6 through 9. At the end of all that, the Pistoffs were ahead 100-53.

Freakin' Rican of the Pistoffs had to miss several bouts this season due to an injury sustained during a travel team bout. She must be back up to full strength, because she scored 15 points for her team in the 11th jam, against Doom Shakalaka of the Dames, who scored 7 before being sent to the penalty box.

Another run of no points for the Dames in jams 13 to 16. The Pistoffs really capitalized on it, with Combat Cat scoring 13 in the 15th, and U.S.S. Dent Her Prize scoring 15 in the 16th jam. Murder City Mistress, a skater that transfered from another league and was recently acquired by the Dames, broke that streak when she scored 9 points, as her teammates effectively played into the 20 foot pack restriction rule. One last scoreless streak for the Dames from jam 18 to 21, during which Elle McFearsome scored 17 in one jam for the Pistoffs. Terror Ettes scored 9 final point for the Dames in the 22nd and final jam. Score, 181 to 84.

Cookie Rumble, captain of the Detroit Pistoffs
Detroit Area Dork: What are your initial thoughts on that bout?
Cookie Rumble: That bout was so much fun. From the intro, which we've been practicing with the Dames and keeping secret, all the way to the last jam. It was nothing but good times, hard work. Usually you get really stressed out and nervous before a bout, but because we've had a history of being kind of sister teams with the Dames, we've been around, been back and forth with the two teams pretty much for my whole career. I knew it was going to be a good time.
D: They were leading for a while in the first half. How do you think they got ahead of you?
C: Hard work, hard hits, playing smart. We kind of lost it. We were getting penalties, and rotating the box. They were keeping it pretty tight and locked down. They've definitely been practicing and it shows on the track. Their hits are hard, their walls are tought to get through.
D: Your team was leading for the whole second half, and you pulled far ahead. What changed in your game plan?
C: Voodoo. I shook a stick at them. At halftime we went downstairs and kind of took a deep breath and said "Hey, let's start playing our game. Enough with the penalties. Let's really kind of bring it back, do what the Pistoffs do, wall up, calm down, just keep hammering at them." I think that worked for us.
D: What worked right for the team, overall?
C: Staying together. Keeping our heads in the game instead of getting focused on one particular jam. If a jam didn't go well, not getting wrapped up in it. Leaving each jam as that jam, and moving forward. Not getting hooked on if we did something wrong in the previous jam.
D: The championship is going to be you versus GPM again. How do you prepare for them?
C: Drinking, and praying...and voodoo, don't forget the voodoo. No, I'm serious. Serious. Voodoo, drinking, praying. GPM has been busting their butts, and it shows. They are an awesome team. They work hard. They come to every practice. You can definitely tell that they're the team this year. They're the team to beat, kind of, since they've beaten everybody. So, yay!
Dr. Rocktopus, manager for the Devil's Night Dames:
Detroit Area Dork: So what are you thinking after the conclusion of that bout?
Dr. Rocktopus: I am really, really, really, really proud of everything the girls did. I thought that first half, they were really on fire. They were playing really well, with a lot of heart. They were playing as a team. The downfall, obviously, we got into a little penalty trouble. I think that's where people started to get a little flustered. Things get frazzled a little bit. Outside of that, I think they played an excellent game. There's a lot of positives. Three rookies came out, and they put it all out on the track, and I think they did really well. Mistress came out and nailed a power jam, nailed two grand slams. I think the team played really hard, and I think they played really well.
D: You were leading in the first half. You think the momentum change had something to do with penalties?
R: Oh, absolutely. When you've got four girls on the track and your jammer, you can do a lot more. When you're playing against jammers like Cookie Rumble, Kraken, Freakin' Rican, they're really agile, really quick. You need those four girls to really hold people like that down. That's where the Pistoffs are really good. They always capitalize on penalties.
D: Do you think the Pistoffs upped their game in the second half?
R: No, I think they played their style of game all the way through. They've always played really solid, and it always comes down to penalties. I think it's really hard to counteract when you have people in the box.
D: Your next bout is against D-Funk. How are you going to prepare for them?
R: We go back, we watch the film from tonight. Obviously we always stress and address playing clean. Really look for what people got called for on the penalties, and see if there's habits that people have, and just try to address those habits. I think if we can keep our four girls on the floor, and our jammer, we're a really strong team. As long as can keep that momentum up, the Dames are a really positive team, the most fun on the bench, and lighthearted. They're just a great group of girls. I think just having that, and keeping us out of the box, we're a strong team, and we'll just keep working on the basics.

motorcityblog@earthlink.net for you chance to win

Jimbo Mathus and his band the Tri-State Coalition are on tour for his new album White Buffalo, out ow on Fat Possum Records.  They'll be in Ferndale on Friday, March 22 at the Magic Bag w/Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band.

The story: Over his 40-some years, Jimbo has played mandolin in his family band, did the South Memphis early punk scene with Jack Oblivion, co-founded the Squirrel Nut Zippers, been nominated for Grammys (twice, for Buddy Guy's Sweet Tea and his work with the Dickinsons),  worked as a river barge deckhand and wandered the US alone to get a feel for its music and its people. This album could not have been made anywhere other than the Deep South ? it's steeped in the mythology, culture and language of the Mississippi Delta, where Mathus' family goes back generations.

White Buffalo was recorded at Delta Recording Services Studio with producer Eric ?Roscoe? Ambel (Steve Earle) and is a departure for Mathus as he embraces his Southern heritage and the styles of music he heard growing up: country, blues, gospel, rock 'n' roll.   Mathus and his band conjure some serious musical mojo on White Buffalo, from the Springsteen-esque, mandolin-driven biblical tale "In the Garden," to the Southern gospel flavor of "Poor Lost Souls," to the  eerie blues of "Run Devil Run" (named for a Lucky Mojo "vigil candle").

It's an honest, raw album with deep roots in the Delta mud.

Show Preview-Interview!!! – Stars, Majestic Theatre, Fri. Mar.22

Stars

The five-member Canadian band Stars make brilliant music by mixing beauty with sonic extremes resulting in songs that combine male and female vocals with stirring guitars and keyboards. They are currently on tour with their latest record “The North.” While “The North” may not have quite the visceral impact the “The Five Ghosts” had, it does pack consistently good indie pop songs that continue to show off the strength of Stars songwriting craft.
While touring across the US and Canada, Chris Seligman–keyboardist and french horn player for Stars found some time in his cluttered schedule to answer some questions about their tour, music and promoting via social media.

MCB:  You’re touring during March, but not playing SXSW; was there a reason for skipping this year?
Stars: We haven't played SXSW since we were young lads, I’d say generally it’s a festy for the newer generation of bands, plus we are touring in Canada for most of March. It's a little out of the way for where we are at.
MCB: The single “Backlines” is such a sweet short song, at just over 2 minutes, was there any thought to making it longer?
Stars: I think it crossed my mind once, but it was born that way and we decided to relish its nature
MCB: With your tour you have some places you’re playing 2 nights and doing special set lists each night – what kind of show are you planning for Detroit?
Stars: I think cause we are doing just one show, we will amalgamate the two nights to give the most popping show we can.
MCB: With soundcloud, tumblr, youtube, facebook etc. all being places to expose your music, is this all a welcome chance to be heard or a burden to have to continually post somewhere?
Stars: I'd say at this point it's nice to have these tools to just stay alive as a band.
MCB:  I’m sure some (or all) you were all working day jobs and playing in the band at the same time, what was the signal or breaking point that prompted you to quit your day job and focus solely on making music?
Stars: I'd say it was around the  time we signed with Art-Crafts and had a true support system,   things started to come together for us a bit more, but it was also just the process of slugging it for years,  for a band like us we had to do the work, pay our dues..
MCB: What’s your favorite thing to do with your downtime while touring?
Stars: I like to play a little guitar these days do some writing near a tree, and go for nice dinners.

Stars just released a free ep "You Guys are Awesome". You can catch Stars at Majestic Theatre this Friday with Milo Greene and Said the Whale.

Pencil this in for May 16th - VIETNAM at Blind Pig Ann Arbor

VietNam marked their long-awaited return with the release of their new  full-length album, an A.merican D.ream, on Mexican  Summer last month.  Michael Gerner, the creative force  behind VietNam, is back for the first time in five years with a new  six-piece lineup laying down their renowned signature cocktail of  apocalyptic street blues.

Produced by Matt Boynton (Kurt Vile,  Gang Gang Dance, Beirut, etc), an A.merican D.ream is  a dark, cinematic concrete ride that  revs through demons and detours with greasy grace.

After taking a long break to explore his  interest in ambient analog synth soundscapes on the West Coast  (scoring films and recording with his project D.A.), Gerner has now  made a bold comeback to both New York City and rock and roll with his  best record to date - adding a new dimension to the instrumentation with  a moog player and a violinist.

Throughout the 2000's,  vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Gerner and his revolving lineups spent  years tirelessly burning up America's moonlit highways and releasing  memorable records that include the critically-acclaimed self-titled  debut LP on Kemado Records in 2007, three prior EP's  on The Social Registry, and their debut,
The Concrete?s  Always Grayer  on the Other Side of the Street on Vice Records in 2003. When the  work, hopes, and dreams finally culminated in a crescendo of across the-board success,  Michael Gerner and Vietnam disappeared without a trace…until now.

DIONNE FARRIS & THE RUSSELL GUNN QUARTET - Jazz Cafe Music Hall Detroit - Friday & Saturday, April 26th-27th, 2013 (8 & 10 PM)

DIONNE FARRIS & THE RUSSELL GUNN QUARTET
Friday & Saturday, April 26th-27th, 2013 (8 & 10 PM)

(Detroit, MI)  Jazz Cafe is proud to present the one-two punch of Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter Russell Gunn and his Quartet featuring Grammy-winning vocalist Dionne Farris, as they combine for a very special two nights (2 sets each night), Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, 2013 in the Jazz Café with two shows each night - 8 and 10 PM.

The Russell Gunn Quartet, ensures an eclectic genre bending experience that fuses Ms Farris multi faceted vocal ability which melds, hip-hop, pop, soul, gospel, R&B and now with this innovative Quartet, she adds Jazz to her repertoire.

According to Creative Loafing Atlanta, "these Atlanta-based musical heavyweights are taking the stage (for two shows each night) — along with the members of Gunn’s Quartet (Kevin Smith on bass, Louis Heriveaux on piano, Henry Conerway III on drums) — to serve up, says Gunn, “the Dionne Farris songbook with arrangements by yours truly.”

Dionne Farris  sang on three songs with the hip hop group Arrested Development. In 1995, she had a solo hit single called "I Know", which hit number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1996. Then in 1997, she had another hit, "Hopeless" (written by Van Hunt) from the Love Jones soundtrack.

Trumpeter, Russell Gunn's virtuoso reach and command of all musical styles from funk to the avant-garde evidenced a serious new talent on the scene.

Gunn's eclectic musical approach also brought him together with artists like Cee-Lo , Maxwell, D'Angelo, Ne-Yo, Branford Marsalis, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, while continuing to perform with his own groups and push the boundaries of how music is heard.

With a singular style that incorporates the influences of masters like Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, and the underrated Booker Little, Gunn has continued to gain recognition for his own music through touring and well-received albums, including the Grammy-nominated Ethnomusicology, Vol. 1 and Ethnomusicology Vol. 2.

FREE VINYLS - SHOW REVIEW: Glen Hansard live in New Zealand by Tall Kiwi Chick

So our good ol pal Tall Kiwi Chick turned us on to to this great folk singer Glen Hansard recently and we were looking up his tour dates and sure enough nothing in Detroit so we said

"rack em girlie - you are flying to see him on the old MCB credit card!!!"

After the midnight run from Christchurch to Auckland she came back with some pics and a review and we convinced his label to give away a few vinyl records for your home listening pleasure as part of the promo and we hope to see Glen on this side of the world soon

TALL KIWI CHICK was a winner in one of our contests for free tickets
and of course we chatted it up a bit and met up with her and her crew at the show.
After knocking back a few cold ones we were fast friends and thick as thieves.
Anyway - we thought it would nice to get some insight about good ol dietroit
from someone with a bit different perspective so we created this column

After a year or so living in the states and running the streets for MCB
the gals from DOWNUNDER DETROIT reluctantly had to return to Christchurch NZ
but they have been reporting on various things KIWI from time to time
and will be visiting the motorcity again and again and again

She loves music, men & drinking

So OH MY GOD.
What a fucking AWESOME show!!!!

Glen Hansard with The Frames, and Lisa Hannigan supporting.

When I saw online that Glen Hansard was going to be playing at the Auckland Town Hall, I knew I had to be there. Not only is it a small venue, but when I checked my work roster, I had that day off!!

I asked everyone I knew, and managed to talk my older brothers and sister in laws to fly up to Auckland with me for 1 night, so we could all go listen to Glen, (I also had secret plans to Marry him, but this didn’t happen once I realized he was far too short, but I still have very strong feelings for him).
(I am VERY tall so it probably wouldn't have work out anyway)

WELL BLOODY WORTH IT!!!

Now it seems Glen Hansard isn’t as well known as he should be. While I’ve been bragging to most people I’ve come in contact with lately, they haven’t had a clue. Unless their Irish. So let me run through this for you..

I discovered him when watching the movie “Once”. He is an Irish Singer Songwriter that has been playing as part of “The Frames” for the past 22 years. His voice is amazing, and when he sings, like very few other singers, it flows directly into my soul.  After the popularity from the Movie “Once” a Documentary was released called “The Swell Season” which gave a very interesting view of Life on Tour. I also recommend you watch this, if you can hunt it down! He also starred in “The Commitments” – I know, I’ve must rewatch that movie! And lastly keep a look out for The Frames Documentary being released soon!!

So back to this show… 4 Shots and 3 Beers before the show, along with my eldest brothers Disapproval, I was  READY for this!!

Lisa Hannigan, who I hadn’t heard of before the show, opened the show. Her voice was beautiful, and I was immediately consumed by her voice and melodic songs. She sang mostly solo switching between Ukulele & Acoustic Guitar. I have since downloaded her album “Passenger”. Turns out she’s been around for many years..  Damn secretive Irish…

Glen & The Frames came out around 9pm, and I was not disappointed!! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO HIM! He was amazing. He chatted at length between songs, showing us he was happy to be here & happy to play, which of course added to the goodness of the show. He sang songs with The Frames, he sang some songs acoustically,

He even sang without a microphone for “Say it to me now” and HOLY SHIT it was amazing. He sang covers from Marvin Gaye & Gladys Knight, and played the longest encore I think I’ve ever heard! One of the many Irish people in the crowd handed him a huge Irish Flag, and so he sang around the stage with the flag around his shoulders. The drummer impressed me so much, especially at the end when he went Hard Out, that I vowed I would blow the dust of my own set of drums, and have a play.

Glen at times also played his guitar so hard that the strings were noticeably breaking, but it sounded good! After each song during the encore, the cheering would start and Glen would say ‘One more…” you could see he did not want to leave the stage! He ended the show at Midnight (That was 3 hours of music!!) with Leonard Cohen's “passing through” and the whole band (And did I mention they had about 10 people on stage!) stepped off the stage and sang in a line right around the whole venue!!

I left on such a high. It was one of the best concerts I’ve been too, and I’ve been to many!  And I can’t remember the last time I went to a concert that finished at midnight. Great at the time, but not great when I had to wake up at 4am to catch up flight back to Christchurch!

So PLEASE rent/buy the movie “ONCE”. That is all I ask.  Glen Hansard is AMAZING and it’s wrong that is not more well known.

Get to his website and buy everything!
