Tales of the Ratfink - 10/26/2006, 7:30 pm
(USA/2006)directed by Ron MannA true pop culture phenomenon who was way ahead of his time, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth was a visionary customizer of cars, a brilliant cartoonist, an outrageous self-promoter and may well have single-handedly invented the custom T-shirt as we know it. His “Rat Fink” character, conceived as the flea-bitten, lowlife cousin of Mickey Mouse (Roth's Anaheim, California neighbor and a character Roth always despised) became a rallying symbol for misfits, gearheads, drag racers and young countercultural geeks throughout the '50s and '60s. This lively and loving tribute to Ed is full of archival footage, original Roth fiberglass-molded car designs, and bright animation, with voiceovers by such celebrated Roth-niks as Jay Leno, Ann-Margret, Matt Groening, Steve Austin, Brian Wilson and John Goodman as the posthumous voice of the Big Daddy himself. (78 min.)
