FREEEP! - Not the free press yo but a FREE EP download from MPPA

Since its thanksgiving and all here is an the new MPPA EP for free - enjoy

We had a hard copy ready to roll but sometimes you just have to TAKE - so sorry you are all losers of that contest....we will make it up to you next week

Mister P. and his party have taken themselves captive to become the their own producers, manufacturers, and distributors. It was a deferential revolt against inertia, a clearing of the throat to answer the quiet. Or maybe it was an inevitable reaction to seeing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. In adherence to their demands, these songs were recorded in a cabin in Bearsville, NY, as a simple sonic manifestation of their opinions concerning the arguable value of a waterlogged paperback.

A Free EP prospectively titled:

The Dawn before the Dark Leaves or Water off a Black Dog's Back or Amazing Life or Butterfly Mornings and Wildflower Afternoons or May we never go go mental, may we always stay stay gentle or The Fear of not Being Afraid or The Warmth Within the Warren or Dreaming of Sleeping or Saying It to Keep It From Happening or This is not the Dark Leaves or Living for Liv Ullman or The Odds of a Sunrise or Whispering Pines or You'll be the Rhythm and I'll be the Beat and I'll be the Rhythm and You'll be the Beat or The Grass Harp or Goodbye Barcelona or Why is my copy of the Moviegoer Floating in a Puddle Beside the Car.

©POPpor2nity Exhibition, December 13th, 2008 6PM-10PM

©POPpor2nity
©POP Gallery’s 2nd All-Media Exhibit for New and Exciting Artists!
©POPpor2nity Exhibition, December 13th, 2008 6PM-10PM

©POP is extremely proud to announce the opening of ©POPpor2nity 2008, with an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, December 13, from 7PM - 10PM, featuring over 60 new artists from the world over.

©POPpor2nity – The second call for entries for the ground-breaking, all-media exhibition for all artists who have never shown at ©POP before. For a nominal submission fee, every ©POPpor2nity artist will be featured in arguably Detroit’s most popular and influential and gallery, ©POP, with an opening reception for the artists of ©POPpor2nity on Saturday, December 13 from 6 PM until 10 PM. Cpop is expecting to fill both it’s floors with new artists’ work in all mediums.

Like the first ©POPpor2nity in March of 2007, submissions were culled primarily over the internet through social networks like, MySpace, Craigslist and DeviantArt.com, and once again ©POP has received nearly a hundred submissions from everywhere in the US as well as Turkey, Greece and Canada to name but three of the many countries where ©Pop is well known.

The participants will be juried by a panel of 10 locally and internationally renowned artists, media folk, and celebrities, with the winners to be featured in their own 4-person showcase of champions exhibition at a later date at the storied Detroit gallery.
A few of the judges are : Artist/Chantuese Niagara, Murdercap Records impresario, Jerome Almon, DEMF Founder and global events producer, Carol Marvin, Musician/art collector, Ken Stanley & Dirty Show Head-Honcho, Jerry Vile.

Some of this years confirmed artists include, Brandi Read, Kelley O’Hara, Jeff Van Buskirk, Nina Friday, Lisolette Gilcrest, Bruce Finsilver, Rudy Fig, William Roberts, Lisa Goedert, Maria Reiter, Kostas Mistilis, Greg Loselle, Kevin Bourgeois, Ryan Cronin, Tony Roko, Patrick Harris, Nick Fisher, Audra McKean, Dale Drieling, Dennis Jacobs, Joshua Gaudette, Daniel Pearson and Matthew Martin who was a judge last year, but oddly, has never shown at Cpop before.
©POPpor2nity will run through the end of January 2009.

The following is a video of the first ©POPportunity winners’ exhibit entitled,
“It’s Humble To Be Good”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqWEfWh3yDo

©POPpor2nity is an innovative, artist friendly tweaking of the “vanity gallery” concept, whereby galleries lease space to select artists, a common practice in New York City Galleries, gives every potential artist a chance to exhibit up to 3 pieces for a nominal fee. The only problem is that it is usually the fee is an exorbitant amount of money for an artist to rent the entire gallery- and still have to cut the gallery in a healthy chunk of the sale. With ©Poppor2nity, many fledgling or unknown artists get a chance to exhibit in a world-class gallery at only a fraction of the normal “vanity fee”, while getting an unheard-of 90% of the sale and a chance to compete for their own 4 person exhibit later next year.

Submissions will be taken from now through December 2 - Artists may send up to 3 JPEGS in low to medium resolution to rick@cpop.us by December 2, 2008. Entrants will receive a critique and response within 3 days via email on the status of their inclusion and the amount of submission fee.

©POP Gallery is located at 4160 Woodward Detroit, MI 48226.

WILD AT HEART - THANKSGIVING 2008 EDITION

Hey Kirk-Have a great birthday and holiday!
here is this week's blog post - Bill

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog
He has a radio program on WXOU out of Oakland University

Wild At Heart

Looks like Thanksgiving is just around the corner and a number of people are struggling to find things to be thankful for. With jobs becoming even more scarce, it is getting difficult to remain optimistic here in Michigan. During my show this morning, one of my faithful listeners called today to tell me he is getting laid off from one of the Big 3 and another friend is leaving Michigan for a job down south. Add to this the prospect of the Lions going 0-12, and it is almost enough to take the fun out of the holidays. Heck I won’t even get into the arguments the Native Americans have about the holiday. I just hope to get together with friends, watch football (go Cowboys) and be thankful for what I do have.

If you see this in time, Dr Pepper has extended it’s Guns N Roses contest to 6PM today where you can try to get online or call there toll free number (1-888-DRPEPPER) and leave your info. I heard part of the album when I was at St Andrews this week though I have never really been a big fan of the band. I was there working the Hawthorne Heights show downstairs and only came up once or twice to check things out. I heard most listening parties were getting around 200 people though only about 30 showed up. I think that might have something to do with the venue. Now I love the staff at St Andrews but it is a little bit out of the way and not really the type of place I think off when I think CD listening party. I would think the Crofoot, the Emerald or some other suburban (Royal Oak, Ferndale) bar that caters to a hard rock audience would have gotten a better crowd. To be fair, they didn’t get permission until the last minute and that never helps when trying to promote.

Still, I hate GNR (Slash excepted) but I thank them for my free Dr Pepper.

Talking about a good album release, Nov 22nd marked the 40th Anniversary of one of my favorite albums, The Beatles’ White Album. It was the #1 album when I was born and despite not having any top 40 hits, it has some very memorable songs such as “Back In The USSR”, “Dear Prudence” (which was covered beautifully by Siouxsie and the Banshees), “Helter Skelter”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (a great Harrison song with Clapton on guitar) and “Blackbird”. Also, you got to love song titles like “Piggies”, “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” and “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey”. The plain white cover was designed by pop artist Richard Hamilton and was originally planned to be entitled “A Doll's House” (luckily the band Family had used a similar title). The album is their most musically diverse (a number of songs were inspired by their trip to India) and you can catch the hints of their break-up starting to emerge (thanks Yoko). I have a German white vinyl version which is one of the cornerstones of my music collection. Some influences include Charles Manson’s borrowing of the term Helter Skelter which he construed as predicting a prolonged race war and justifying the murder of wealthy people (I never got that from listening to the album), the famous Paul is dead fiasco and a wonderful Eric Idle led parody group The Rutles.

I had a good time at the Main Art Theatre this weekend with the premiere of “My Name Is Bruce” which stars and is directed by Royal Oak born Bruce Campbell. Bruce basically plays a version of himself in this film and he is currently filming a sequel to a cheesy sci-fi film. Angry at his manager (one of the many Ted Raimi roles in the film) and threatening to fire him, Bruce goes home to his trailer where he is met by a young kid from Gold Lick who believes Bruce is like his heroic characters in his movies and wants Bruce to help save his town from the evil demon Guan Di. The movie is a must for Bruce fans and b-movie aficionados though the appeal might stop there. Bruce has some great one-liners and there are tributes to previous roles such as Ash and Bubba Ho-Tep. Don’t expect too much from the film and you will enjoy it. After the film, Bruce did a Q&A talking about various items like Evil Dead 4 (he feels he is too old to do it justice – Indy 4 anyone), Ash vs Jason vs Freddy (since they said Ash wouldn’t win, he said no), Bubba Nosferatu (he couldn’t figure a way to get his character into the film so he dropped out) and talked a bit about the fun of Brisco County Jr and Burn Notice. He also mentioned that the film was made in his backyard where he apparently had enough room to build a small western style town. I’d hate to mow that yard.

Good news for Cyndi Lauper fans!! David Byrne stated in his blog that he has collaborated with Lauper on a track for his upcoming “Here Lies Love” and she has recorded a special Christmas duet with Swedish rock band The Hives, entitled "A Christmas Duel", which is available as a download-only single.

I talked to Ingrid Michaelson last week when she did her signing at Borders. She reminds me a lot of Lisa Loeb, but in a good way. Her new album, “Be OK” is not an official album but started as an EP which graduated to a full fledged album containing live tracks and covers. She said she has finished her next album which is a little darker than the last and will be out next fall. A portion of all sales of her current album will go to the charity Stand Up To Cancer.

MCB's Jesse Welter was there to shoot the show and the in-store performance and got a nice shot of me doing the interiew.

Danny Boyle was great to talk to last week in anticipation of his new movie “Slumdog Millionaire” (based on the novel “Q&A” by Vikas Swarup). An Indian former street child from Mumbai is a contestant on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepaii’, the Hindi version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’. He had gone onto the game show to reach his missing childhood sweetheart, who he knows watches the show religiously. When he gets to the last question, he is suspected of cheating and must reveal his life story to see how he knows the answers despite not having an education of any kind. The movie was filmed in India in the slums where Boyle criticizes Swarup who has never been in the slums. Boyle believes if you are going to make a film (or write a book) you should go to where you can get real-life experience and not avoid it. The crew used handheld cameras on the street to get a lot of the footage because of this. Boyle also admits that he thought the book was unfilmable until he read Simon (Full Monty) Beaufoy’s script. Boyle felt that he really got to the heart of the book and he says he will usually read the book and take ideas back to the screenplay writer but in this case he could find nothing to add to his script. I am hoping to see the film soon though I have read the book and there are a lot of adaptive changes so be careful. Boyle also brought up in my interview that he is looking at making a sequel to the 28 Days Later franchise but it will depend on many factors. He is working on it though.

I also had the pleasure of talking to comedian Colin Quinn who was at Oakland University this weekend. He is known for his work on MTV’s Remote Control, a tenure as news anchor on Saturday Night Live (1995-1998) and Comedy Central’s The Tough Crowd. He is currently trying to put through a number of projects which he will have control over. He is content doing this and his stand-up and doesn’t see himself doing TV roles or guest appearances. I hope you heard my interview with him this morning on my show on WXOU 88.3FM or online at www.wxou.org where we talked about the relevance of Saturday Night Live and Brian Wilson.

Hey, Flaming Lips fans!! You might want to go to the Crofoot on Nov 29th to catch the Detroit premiere of ‘Christmas on Mars: A Fantastical Film Freakout Featuring the Flaming Lips’, a glorious science fiction film that marks the directorial debut of the Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne. The film takes place at Christmas and the colonization of Mars is underway. However, when an oxygen generator/gravity control pod malfunctions, Major Syrtis and his team fear the worst. Syrtis also hallucinates about the birth of a baby, and many other strange things (if you have ever seen them live, you know they can be crazy). Meanwhile, a compassionate alien super-being arrives who inspires and helps the isolated astronauts. The screening will also feature a couple of shorts from local Sci-Fi Comedy troupe, “Iron Core TV”. Listen to WXOU for your chance to win tickets. Actually, the first 2 people to email me at doramu13@yahoo.com will be set up with a pair of tickets for will call. Doors at 8PM or go to Crofoot website for more info.

"Christmas on Mars" is a MOTORCITYBLOG sponsered event as well

My radio show on Thurs will be pre-recorded this week but I will be back in Dec with interviews with the casts of A Bronx Tale and The Rat Pack Is Back. The Rack Pack Is Back, which is playing at the GEM Theatre is a musical tribute to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Joey Bishop, who appeared together on stage and in films during the early-1960s, including the original “Ocean's Eleven”. The group never referred to themselves with that title (preferring the Summit or the Clan) but they had a big effect on establishing Las Vegas as a premiere entertainment town and helped break down racial barriers (they refused to play in places that didn’t treat African Americans equally, including their own member Sammy). I can only wonder what it would have been like to see this group on stage but this is the closest I can get now that all the members are dead (Joey passed away in 2007). The show has each member doing some solo numbers of their greatest hits and a number of ensemble pieces. The actors do pretty decent impressions of these icons though I thought the actor playing Frank Sinatra captured him the best. If you enjoy the memories of these greats and what that era represented, come down to the show and be prepared to enjoy yourself. Go to www.gemdetroit.com for more information.

Well that is it for now. Have a great Thanksgiving week whatever you end up doing. I hope to see some of you ska fans Toasters show tonight at the Magic Stick (WXOU will have a promotions table at the event). Wednesday has a few good shows. I will be at the Yes show at the Fillmore but you can also see Fishbone with Natives Of the New Dawn at St Andrew’s Hall or the Hard Lessons with Bump at the Majestic. On Friday, the Verve Pipe will be at St Andrew’s Hall. Saturday is star filled with the Blue Man Group (see them if you can) playing a couple of night at Caesar’s Windsor, Jeff Daniels is doing his annual fundraiser at the Michigan Theatre and the Electric Six will be at St Andrew’s Hall. I will talk to you all again on next Monday. Until then, take care and remember to email me if you want those Flaming Lips movie tickets.

Detroit’s first screening of Flaming Lips’ "Christmas on Mars"

Saturday, November 29, 2008
8 PM
A Fantastical Film Freakout Featuring the Flaming Lips, a glorious science fiction film that marks the directorial debut of the Lips' visionary frontman Wayne Coyne.

Seven years in the making, Christmas on Mars features original music by the Flaming Lips ("The greatest U.S. band today" - The Guardian), with acting performances by all band members, and many others from their Oklahoma City-based team. Comedian Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live) and actor Adam Goldberg (Dazed and Confused, Two Days in Paris) also appear, as does performer Steve Burns of the band Steve Burns and the Struggle (who had also appeared in children's television show Blue's Clues). Bradley Beesley and George Salisbury co-directed the movie with Mr. Coyne.

The first Detroit screening of this acoustically demanding sound track is aptly presented in the audio showcase of the Crofoot Ballroom.

It's Christmastime, and the colonization of Mars is underway. However, when an oxygen generator and a gravity control pod malfunction, Major Syrtis (the Lips' Steven Drozd) and his team (including the Lips' Michael Ivins) fear the worst. Syrtis also hallucinates about the birth of a baby, and many other strange things. Meanwhile, a compassionate alien super-being (Coyne) arrives, inspiring and helping the isolated astronauts.

Also screening will be:

Several short films from local Sci-fi-Comedy troupe, Iron Core TV http://skitztv.com/ .
Check out their premiere of episode 4 of Amil and Ewok, and more.

As well as: THE CEMETERY PRECINCTS – Directed by Michael Einheuser & Rob Gulley (12:00) (Michigan 2008) A liberal fantasia played in the key of Z, "The Cemetery Precincts" tells the story of what happens when a couple of political dirty tricksters try a bit of old-school election fraud and scare up more than they bargained for. Includes an homage to "Night of the Living Dead" and lots of blood effects by makeup artist Dan Phillips. Written by Nancy Nall-Derringer. Music provided by Sucker DJ's Mikel O.D., Tom Matich, and Jeff Milo.

Doors 8pm, Movie starts @ 8:30pm.
Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes. This film is not rated.

Deadstring Brothers - Magic Stick Dietroit - Sat Nov 29th

Last Minute show addition at The Magic Stick on Saturday, 11/29

Touring behind their Bloodshot debut Starving Winter Report, Detroit’s acclaimed Deadstring Brothers found what they were looking for in London, where the Heavy Load club scene was packing in rock n’ roll fans who danced all night to bands like The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes and The Allman Brothers. A bona-fide scene had developed that continues to grow today, where young players seeking kindred souls to play blues and country-tinged rock come together.

Energized by this burgeoning scene, and with a number of new British players in town, the Deadstring Brothers returned to Detroit to record Silver Mountain. Recorded in the Deadstring Brothers’ own recording studio, Silver Mountain boasts the tunesmanship of The Faces and the barroom howl of The Band stewed together in homage to the blues of the American South and dancehalls of the urban factory North.

Music like this formed the genesis of album-oriented FM rock -- Silver Mountain showcases high energy bluesy rave-ups and hymnal country ballads. Harmonica player Mickey Raphael also took a break from his place alongside the great Willie Nelson, contributing to “The Light Shines Within” and “Slow Down”.

Raw and feverish, Silver Mountain is the sound of a band working at its peak, synthesizing common influences (regardless of one’s birthplace) with a modern edge. Cut from jaws of Michigan steel, East London pubs and honed from months on the never-ending road, the Deadstring Brothers testify to the soul-saving grace of rock n’ roll.

MCB-EATS: Review of TOAST Birmingham

TOAST expands into downtown Birmingham!
MOTORCITYBLOG was invited to attend “Press Day” at TOAST ‘s newest location on Pierce Street this past Tuesday afternoon. If you have toured the Ferndale breakfast circuit more than likely you have eaten at TOAST Ferndale on Woodward. With my husband in tow we were ready to try this new breakfast joint. I was gleefully surprised to stumble into the visually stunning, sophisticated yet comfortable atmosphere with a full BAR plus LUNCH and DINNER on the menu.

TOAST stands out among Birmingham’s chain coffee shops and bakeries not just with their hip and inviting décor but also with a menu that you want to get to know better. Toast gives Birmingham a much needed blast of cool. A place to sip coffee, get a bite, grab a drink, meet a friend or neighbor and stay for a while.

The primary dining room is a glowing, functional stunner with red and gold tones to warm you on the coldest of days. Dressed in Orikri paintings that flow with the room but burn with a life of their own –as if the works are windows to other worlds. The second, “Blue room” is a very hep, cool and quieter alternative with chocolate brown sofas, soft chairs and a gorgeous shade of blue walls. There are plenty of interesting design elements to the room if you are into that; if not, it all recedes into a background glow.

Looking closely at the menu nothing is as simple as it seems. It is divided into 4 sections: “eat” which is Toast’s version of appetizers , “good” the salads, “food” the entrée’s, and finally “yum” the desserts.
Let’s start out with the Ahi Tacos, a favorite of mine having spent years in California and Hawaii—and a welcome menu surprise as we in Michigan trudge into winter. I was immediately impressed with the quality and size of the fish exploding out of what seemed to be an authentic corn tortilla. Coolness and crispness provided by jicama slaw and salsa fresco. With an extra kick from the smokedchili-cardamom cream they were warm and satisfying on a blustery November day. Take me back to 80 degree weather even with the high humidity!!
The salads look as titillating as the rest of the menu, full of interesting ingredients with Toast’s own take on the classic. The bistro salad has bacon, candied walnuts, goat cheese on spinach with a roasted pepper-citrus vinaigrette.
Our second course was the Carnitas, pulled pork on top of a savory green onion-cilantro corn waffle. Now that you don’t see everyday. For me this was lacking a certain something but it gets an A plus for inventiveness and MCB sees potential here. I like the idea of savory waffles and pancakes and would love to see them more often.

Third, the absolute MCB winner; the all-flavor encompassing Toast version of an open faced burger-- “The Joint”. Super satisfying; it is a large size Piedmontese patty smothered in basil aioli and tomato jam atop a bed of blue cheese stuffing, a rich bread and cheese mixture to balance out the crispy onions on top served with a little sweet carrot slaw on the side and all of this for only 10 bucks!!
Toast also has a great wine selection--I do not hand out this complement easily, but the Bennett Family Chardonnay I had recommended to me was perfection. As well as great beers on tap like PBR, Stella, Bell’s and Guinness also a nice selection of bottled beer. Also Bloody Mary’s (can’t wait to try!), Bellini’s, Mimosa’s and their own signature martini’s.

They have it all.
If this doesn’t win you over than the Apple Betty will, just deliciousness all served up in one warm bowl of goodness with candied pecans and homemade cinnamon ice cream. This is serious comfort food—so comfortable you want to live in it food. Finally we sampled a few of the fresh sweets from the pastry bar in the foyer as we checked our email using the free wireless internet.

Yum!
We were excited to hear about the Taco Tuesdays; tacos and Dos Equis for 2 bucks each and DJ spinning latin themed music. Look for the “Good Girl/Bad Girl Night” coming soon from what we heard.

And we will definitely be there this Wednesday night; from 9-2am for TOAST Birmingham’s Grand Opening Bar Night with FREE drinks, FREE menu samples and DJ.
Thanks to Toast proprietors, Thom & Regan Bloom, and thanks to all our friends at TOAST for giving us something to smile about this fall.
