Sonic Youth is one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the past 30 years. Their musical journey began in New York City in 1981, when the band released their self-titled album on Neutral Records. After releasing a few more critically acclaimed independent albums, they released the two-disc Daydream Nation in 1988. The album was instantly hailed as one of the greatest albums of the decade. Despite the critical success, the album didn’t initially sell many copies because the record label that released it, Enigma Records, went out of business shortly after the release, thus making the album hard to find. The album was reissued by DGC Records in 1993.

Sonic Youth have been hailed as pioneers of eclectic “noise rock”, using alternate guitar tunings, unconventional song structures, incorporations of non-musical instruments and lots of feedback. The band has recently experimented with more traditional songs, and the band’s new album The Eternal promises a mix of old and new influences. The album will be the first independent release by the band since leaving Geffen Records. That combined with a new writing and recording process should result in Sonic Youth’s most ambitious release to date.
