Saturday May 16th 2009 is Hamtramck CLEAN SWEEP

Mass Consumerism

On Saturday, May 16th hundreds of residents,
MDOT workers, MSHDA employees, city officials and volunteers
will converge in the City if Hamtramck
for the 2009 CLEAN SWEEP.

This event is part of a new citywide initiative to reinvigorate the struggling town though public outreach, event planning and renewed civic pride. Participants are asked to meet at the Peoples Community Center (8625 Jos. Campau, Hamtramck, MI 48212) no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 16 where they will be assigned tasks and supplied with work gloves and tools. Afterwards, volunteers will reconvene at the Peoples Community Center for an awards ceremony/after-party.

As a dense urban community, the streets and alleys of Hamtramck often emerge from the winter months a little worse for the wear — Hamtramck officials hope looking to residents for this major clean up will encourage hometown pride and promote the spirit of community.

The City of Hamtramck's foreign-born population is 41.1% making it Michigan's most internationally diverse city and is often recognized for its Polish heritage and world-famous events including the Hamtramck Blowout Music Festival, Paczki Day celebrations, St. Florian’s Strawberry Festival, International Bazaar and the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival.
