"According to the press packet, the Dequindre Cut was formerly a Grand Trunk Railroad line and a below grade corridor that runs parrallel to St. Aubin Street, between Mack Avenue and Woodbridge St. The area was abandoned in 1982 and became a place where the homeless and a plethora of wildlife, including foxes, pheasants and stray dogs roamed.

Nearly 4 million dollars was poured into the area in the form of street lights, benches and paving and the area has been transformed into a greenway, although much of the graffiti has been allowed to remain, providing a colorful back drop for those who travel the Cut.

On Thursday, May 14, 2009 the cut was officially opened to the public. with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Featured speakers included Mayor Dave Bing and Kim Trent, Director of the Governor's Southeast Michigan Office. After the ceremony, The Martin Luther King Sr. High Band and Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences Marching Band led the crowds through the newly opened Cut. " - MCB's Cherie Stangis
