When the Gories reunited last year Chris Handyside of the MetroTimesnoted the early contact between Dan Kroha and Jon Spencer: "At one of their infrequent out-of-town shows, they supported Memphisruffians the Gibson Brothers, a like-minded crew mining similar sourcematerial with similarly primitive - if more country-tinged - results.
The Gibsons had just added a young Jon Spencer, recently departed from cultlegends Pussy Galore, to their ranks. Spencer - who was blown away by theGories - had some swing with indie labels. He hooked them up withSeattle's Sub Pop. The result was the Gories' sole Sub Pop single, acheeky cover of Spinal Tap's "Gimme Some Money."
Spencer recounted that initial jolt in HEAVY TRASH's THEY WERE KINGS on 2007's GOING WAY WITH HEAVY TRASH: "the Gories were first/out of sight..Mickey and Peg/Danny were cool..Thunderbird baby ESQ.. long before the Fortune building was torndown/they inspired a scene/give 'em the crown..
They Were Kings.." Spencer's post Blues Explosion band HEAVY TRASH
with Matt Verta-Ray hasreset the scales on which Americana is weighed yet again.
Both still wield charismatically the deconstructionist sense of their previous workbut delivered in a soulful blast that reassembles all the angels anddevils of roots music into timeless sonic mythos not much different thanWilliam Burrough's Inter-zone only hipper baby.
Local Psyche-Goth-Rock band DUENDE!
will offer direct support.
DUENDE!recorded their recent album REMNANT OF A REMNANT at Vert-Ray's N.Y.HED studios this past winter. The collective LOCO GNOSIS will pace the nightwith the side-show style interludes by SATORI CIRCUS and Chantal Dixondancing with sword and snake.
Steve Barman of THE STEVE BARMAN SHOW
will host and do a live taping.
Dan Kroha will DJ.
