December 4th & 5th

A long year for the Old Redford neighborhood in Detroit wraps up with three delightful
Holiday events as we launch our month of Christmas shows with the 1938 version of A Christmas
Carol at the Redford Theatre, Fri. Dec. 4 @ 8pm and two shows Sat., Dec. 5 @ 2pm & 8pm.
Also showing are two beloved short subjects from the Fleischer Studio’s and Detroit’s Jam Handy
organization. The 1st cartoon adaptation of the hit song Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1948)
and the live action Christmas Comes but Once a Year (1936). Tickets $4 at the door.
A Christmas Carol is the first of three holiday family events in December, with a family
music show on Dec. 12th, It’s Christmas Time in the City featuring musicians John Lauter and
Tony O’Brien and special guest Jo-Jo Shutty-Macgregor, CKLW alumni, Redford Suburban
league supporter, and Detroit’s original queen of the helicopter traffic report scene.
The movie season ends with two great films on Dec. 18 & 19, 1983’s paean to childhood A
Christmas Story and the Laurel and Hardy silent short comedy Big Business accompanied by
Dave Calendine on the Redford’s original 1928 Barton Theatre organ.
This weekend’s version of A Christmas Carol was filmed in glorious black and white to
capture the atmosphere of England in the time of Charles Dickens and is a comfortable retelling of
the classic Dickens story. Reginald Owens turns in a wonderful performance as the meanhearted
Ebenezer Scrooge who turns his life around. Look for Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, along
with 12 year old June Lockhart, as Mr. and Mrs. Cratchit (and Belinda Cratchit). Leo J. Carroll of
Cosmo Topper fame appears as a truly spooky Marley's Ghost and Ann Rutherford shows up as
probably the loveliest Ghost of Christmas Past.
