PHOTOS: Friday Night Live @ the DIA featuring Rachel Grimes by PAUL HITZ
Rachel Grimes performed 2 sets Friday night at the DIA to a packed house. Her second set was titled "Book Of Leaves"
in her own words:
Book of Leaves began through improvisations during a retreat to Loretto Motherhouse in Marion County Kentucky in May 2005. After a couple of years of intermittent work with recordings and pencil scores, the final recording were made in the summer of 2008. The score is drawn from those recordings with minor modifications.
At the center of this suite, is an exploration of contrasting time frames, environments, moods, and tone colors. The images throughout the score are meant to provide a point of interest loosely related to those themes. Our personal history, memory, imaginings of the stories of those who have been here and are now gone, a quite place unknown to us but nearby, the vast and cyclical context of our natural environment, all play a part in the inspiration for this music.
