INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED VIOLINIST REGINA CARTER RETURNS TO HER HOMETOWN OF DETROIT TO DEBUT A VIOLIN CONCERTO WITH THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND AFRICAN FOLK MUSIC FROM HER UPCOMING ALBUM, REVERSE THREAD





WHO: Regina Carter is among the foremost jazz violinists in the world, She was the first jazz artist and African American to play Niccolo Paganini's famed Guarneri "Cannon" violin (built in 1743.) She is also a MacArthur Fellow ("genius grant") recipient and Grammy nominee. Carter, on the cusp of releasing a new album, Reverse Thread, will demonstrate her remarkable musical diversity by performing two distinctive shows in her hometown of Detroit, MI.

WHAT: Regina Carter kicks off her hometown return by performing tracks from her upcoming release, Reverse Thread, at her alma mater, Oakland University. Set for release in May 2010, Reverse Thread is a celebration of African music, culture and art with a modern perspective and re-imaged for violin. Joined by the kora, a traditional 21-string West African harp, bass, guitar, accordion, drums and percussion, Carter interprets and honors African folk music through her stirring and beautiful violin playing.

Performing with the prestigious Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), Carter will premiere a new, neo-classical violin concerto commissioned by the DSO and written specifically for her by the eminent composer and pianist, Billy Childs.
