FREE TICKETS: Carolyn Striho - Magic Bag Ferndale - Fri June 18th

Want to check out the show on MCB?
Email to win a pair of tickets
Striho is an explosive performer and wonderful songwriter
Do not miss this show!
Carolyn Striho winner of three 2010 Detroit Music Awards including Best Pop/Rock Album for her CD, Honesty, and in his first area performance in over a year, Detroit music legend, Stewart Francke and the buzz worthy Ken Stanley with Ken’s Loud Band, round out a bill of incredible songwriters, Friday, June 18th at The Magic Bag in Ferndale. Doors 8PM.
Admission is $8

Carolyn Striho, a Detroit musician/writer who cut her teeth as a teenage front woman with legendary Bookie’s era bands, The Cubes and Rough Cut, and then as the leader of the Post Was (Not Was) super group, Detroit Energy Asylum, is still one of this city’s most riveting and kinetic performers. Wielding either guitar, piano or her punk sharpened voice; Carolyn Striho commands the stage like a combination of a lioness and Karen-O, exuding danger and sensuality unmatched in the current Detroit Rock scene.

Striho’s follow-up, to this year’s Detroit Music Award-winning Honesty, is going to be a deeper, darker and headier in tone and will feature some well known, even legendary performers including Stooges drummer and old friend, Scott “Rock Action” Asheton.

Carolyn’s current band include, Guitarist. Scott Dailey, Violinist, Kurt Zimmerman and Percussionist, Ron Wolf.
www.reverbnation.com/carolynstriho

One of the most beloved singer/songwriters of the last 20 years, Stewart Francke has rolled up an amazing list of awards and critical acclaim as a Blue-eyed Soul legend, writer, father and humanitarian. The Magic Bag show will be Stewart’s first major local show in over a year, and as usual, his band will be a slick aggregation of well-known sidemen (no surprise!) including, The Pastoria Brothers and Jimmy Bones. Francke’s fans include, Bruce Springsteen and Mitch Ryder, whom he has recorded and performed with.
A new book about his experiences with leukemia and a bone marrow transplant, What Don’t Kill Me…Just Makes Me Strong, is now looking for a publisher, has occupied his creative mind of late, but has still found time to record some new tracks at Detroit’s Harmonie Park Studios, which will no doubt see their stage debut on the 18th.

Rounding out the bill is a curious story indeed, Ken’s Loud Band, from Wyandotte, MI, is the vehicle for enigmatic and until recently, a reclusive songwriter, Ken Stanley, who with his Loud Band, have been continually rehearsing and recording HUNDREDS of incredible, Avant Pop/Rock songs which until earlier this year, had gone unnoticed for over 15 years, has begun to release this material starting with the recent well-received self release, “Good For The Bones.

Happy Memorial Day!! I have a special gift to my readers since I was unable to do my radio show this week and I got tickets to "She & Him" at the Royal Oak Music Theatre to giveaway for June 6 @ Royal Oak Music Theatre. The show is sold out so this might be your last chance to get tickets. She & Him are an American indie folk band consisting of actress Zooey Deschanel (Yes Man, Elf, (500) Days of Summer) and singer-songwriter M Ward (Bright Eyes, Monsters Of Folk). To win tickets, the first person who can answer the following question will get a pair of tickets. Deschanel married Ben Gibbard in September 2009. What band does Ben sing lead vocals for? Send your responce to doramu13@yahoo.com and good luck.

Getting raedy to head over to the Movement Festival. I wasn't going to go this year since WXOU got denied for press passes but one of my bosses hooked me up with free passes to flyer for the upcoming Deadmau 5 and Benny Banassi shows in Detroit. It is usually a fun time to people watch even though on the first day none of the acts overly excited me. I'm going to just chill out, take in the crowd and maybe head back to the playstation van for some more video game action.

Another short list this week but upcoming recommended concerts of the week include:

Tuesday (6/01) Broken Bells @ St Andrews Hall, Gwar @ Headliners (Toledo)

Friday (6/04) Earth, Wind & Fire @ Caesars Windsor "The Colosseum", N*E*R*D and Janelle MonĂ¡e open for Erykah Badu @ Chene Park, singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield @ Majestic Cafe, the Macpodz @ Magic Bag

Saturday (6/05) the soul sounds of Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds @ Chene Park, Motor City Josh & The Big 3 @ Callahan's Music Hall, Verve Pipe @ Headliners (Toledo)

Sunday (6/06) She & Him @ Royal Oak Music Theatre, Zoos of Berlin @ Majestic Cafe, Silverghost and Aran Ruth @ Majestic's "Flip Hair Show", School Of Rock @ Emerald Theatre

Lastly, this week's band of the week in honor of the Movement Festival is S.P.O.C.K (aka Star Pilot On Channel K) from Sweden. They started off playing parties and hit it big in 1990 with the release of their 7" single "Silicon Dream". Fans of Star Trek and Spock (originally the band was called Mr Spock but Paramont wanted large sums of money so they created the acronym), the bands music usually centers on science fiction stories, alien-human relations and life in space. Representative songs include: "E.T. Phone Home", "Never Trust a Klingon", "In Space No One Can Hear You Scream" and "Mr. Spock's Brain". Here is a sampling of their songs.

Have a good holiday and see you later in the week.

Sweethead's Final Night of Residency at Spaceland

MCB's latest addition to the ranks is wonderfully talented Kelli Hayden
KHP is an old school pal of MCB's Moneypenny and
she will be chiming in every so often from Los Angeles
with her killer photos and bad ass attitude

*This should have been posted several days earlier, but I've been out with the flu and in with the drugs. I'm finally recovering and found enough strength to update. I've blocked the writer's block and cranked out this here review for y'all. Enjoy.

Last Monday, May 24th 2010, was Sweethead's final night of their month long residency at Spaceland....as well as the night in which I've been dubbed with the nickname, "Fabulous Wreck" by close pals. Well earned and much deserved might I add. I bought a lens online - a specialty lens referred to as the "nifty fifty" lens with an aperture down to F/1.8 for dark lighting situations. I ordered it express shipping so it would arrive before Monday so I'd have it on time for the show for some bad ass shots. After much anticipation, the lens didn't arrive and I would have to do my best with a lens not fit for dark venues. Strike one.

With Sweethead headlining their final night last Monday, special guests included Joshua Homme and wife, Brody Dalle, Joey Castillo and girlfriend, Pixie Acia, Dave Catching, and many other members of the fruitfully talented family. Eagles of Death Metal were said to be closing out the night with a "secret" performance but that was definitely no secret and unfortunately they had to pull off the bill a few nights prior to the show. Dave Catching sent out a text message with the bad news, but I totally predicted it would happen. Reasons were not advertised, but let's just say Spaceland couldn't house the expected turnout once word got out they'd be playing. Other talent on the bill included Mini Mansions with the likes of Michael Shuman aka Mikey Shoes (Queens of the Stone Age, Jubilee) on drums, guitar, and vocals...altogether. Aside from not being bad on the eyes (at all), Mr. Shoes is a fabulous multi-tasking musician. I arrived to the venue after they had already started playing and just walked in right as they finished what I was told was an excellent version of "Heart of Glass" by Blondie. Damn. Strike two.

After their set, the great and legendary Alain Johannes (Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age) graced the stage with his magical presence. His set was beautiful, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. He ended his solo set with "Making A Cross" which isn't stranger to you if you're into the Desert Sessions, particularly Volumes 7 & 8. The only other time I have heard this song live was at the Natasha Schneider Benefit concert in August, 2008, after she had lost her battle with cancer. It is one of the most beautifully written and performed songs I have ever heard and to watch Mr. Johannes perform it nearly two years after his wife's death almost brought tears to my eyes.

After Johannes, a new group of apples that didn't fall too far from the tree were Hello=Fire. This gathering is the solo project of Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather). Their line-up for the night called other members of Queens of the Stone Age for duty; Troy van Leeuwen (also in Sweethead) on keys and Joey Castillo (also in Eagles of Death Metal) on drums, and also Brendan Benson (The Racontuers), and Michael Horrigan (Twilight Singers) - a stiff musical cocktail served straight up . They embarked on their very first live performance and rocked the hell out of everyone in attendance. I just do not know how these insanely talented people can juggle so many side and solo projects and never fail to keep them so uniquely bad ass and intensively alive, but that answers itself; they're insanely talented people. I cannot wait for future Hello=Fire shows, and more appropriate photos to capture the next immensely awesome set we're already eagerly awaiting. I couldn't capture anything "worthy" to my standards of Troy or Joey for their first performance. Strike three.

There's nothing to say about Sweethead that hasn't been said before other than they totally had the crowd they deserved all four Monday nights on this night. The venue was JAM PACKED for their final Spaceland set for the month of May. By this time, I don't remember what they opened with, or what they played, but I know they did close with the "The Great Distruptors" as usual. My memory got, uh, "foggy" at this point...and even foggier after that. Kelli, you're fired.

My night ended with a run-in with the LAPD who are notorious for police brutality so like a smart person I complied with their bullshit, which I have to now later contest or start kicking rocks in the hot sun. I'm not sure how I find myself in these messes (they find me?) but I've been dubbed "Fabulous Wreck" and the name fits perfectly. It's my new alleged lifestyle in which I must accept. At least it's not boring.

PS, my "nifty fifty" lens arrived on Tuesday mourning along with the flu.

Peace, love, and punk rock,
KHP

Pretty Lights is the musical vision of the ultra-versatile Colorado based producer Derek Vincent Smith, accompanied in the live setting by drummer, Cory Eberhard. Together these two achieve a raw energy rarely reached in the realm of electronic music.

At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of bangin' beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want; electro organic cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion and send dance floors into frenzies.

KID ROCK ISSSUES STATEMENT
ABOUT MOVEMENT FESTIVAL

DETROIT, May 27, 2010—Kid Rock today issued a statement about the 2010 Movement Electronic Music Festival Powered by Ford Fiesta. His Made in Detroit clothing line for the second year in a row is sponsoring a stage at the annual festival.

“Made in Detroit's roots span directly from the electronic music scene and the Movement Festival,” said Rock. “We've been part of this festival since day one. This year we stepped it up a bit and worked with Paxahau to help build a new stage design to improve sound quality. The Underground Stage is the closest you'll get to an old school Detroit warehouse party. It’s a perfect fit for Made in Detroit because the stage features artists from Detroit all weekend long.”

Made in Detroit’s sponsorship has allowed festival organizers to make professional sound quality upgrades to Hart Plaza’s underground stage area.

Made in Detroit additionally is the official T-shirt sponsor of Movement. Their team will also operate the merchandise tent where attendees can purchase official Movement gear.

The 2010 Movement Electronic Music Festival powered by Ford Fiesta, produced by Paxahau Promotions Group, brings the world’s best electronic artists to Detroit for three-days and nights over Memorial Day weekend May 29-31 in Detroit’s Hart Plaza. Heading to Movement? Check out Sasu Ripatti this weekend!

Here is the scoop on Sasu

Sasu Ripatti (aka Vladislav Delay, Luomo) preps two full-lengths as Sistol for release in 2010 and speaks to Resident Advisor about new monikerdouble disc of unreleased material due in August and brand new album out in September on Halo CyanSasu dishes the first scoop on his resurrected psuedonym which he describes as "more straight-forward and less detailed, a little bit more rough or wild and also daring" in a recent interview with Resident Advisor.

Over the past decade, Sasu Ripatti, better known as Vladislav Delay, has released a series of sonically exploratory and innovative albums and singles under his Luomo, Uusitalo, and other guises (including his current stint as an integral part of the Moritz von Oswald Trio), working with labels such as Chain Reaction, Force Tracks, Mille Plateaux, Staubgold, and Leaf, etc. Slightly lost in all that shuffle over the last ten-plus years was one of his earliest projects under the name Sistol, recorded for and released by Phthalo Records back in 1999. Those days of quiet neglect are over, however, as 2010 is the year of Ripatti's Sistol project's bold (re-) coming out party.

Planning to tour in support of these projects later in the year, Ripatti has remastered this early "Sistol" album, injecting the elastic dub-house mechanics of the original material with even more of the delicate, modern-day bounce he's since acquired over the past decade, and Phthalo is reissuing and re-releasing this seminal record as part of the launch of its brand-new Halo Cyan dancefloor-centric imprint and sub-label.

Available in August as a deluxe double-CD and digitally, "Sistol" will include the fully-remastered original album, as well as unreleased bonus tracks from the era, alongside an exhaustive selection of all-new remixes and reworkings from the artist's peers, including techno and electronic luminaries such as John Tejada, Alva Noto, FaltyDL, Sutekh, Mike Huckaby, and [a]pendics.shuffle (to name just a few of the remixers). Additionally, preceding the record's rerelease will be a limited run of several of the remixes of this older material above, available digitally and on limited 12-inch vinyl by Phthalo and Halo Cyan Records in July. But that's just the least of it, really: as part of the 2010 rebirth of Vladislav Delay-as-Sistol, he's recorded a startling new full-length record entitled "On the Bright Side". Influenced and inspired by a range of a year's worth of experimentations - with everything from vividly narcotic flashbacks and memories; to his production work and touring alongside the legendary Moritz von Oswald; to the vast array of ideas that Ripatti immersed himself in while reading aboard long flights from one gig to the next (or when squirreled away at his new home on the remote island of Hailuoto in northern Finland).

Yet almost despite all these experimentations, "On the Bright Side" is a suprisingly bold, poppy record, sounding far closer to a Luomo record than, say, a Vladislav Delay record. Ripatti has taken the brightness of the album's title and wholly literalized and given it corporeal form with a range of garishly vibrant and buoyant synth melodies, alongside stroboscopic basslines that glitter loudly from one track to the next...each somehow managing to retain an air of practiced delicacy throughout the mix.

MCB is Detroit Techno - with exclusives from Kenneth Thomas and Jenny Lafemme

Detroit Techno is an early style of electronic music beginning in 1980s. Detroit has been cited as the birthplace of techno music. Prominent Detroit Techno artists include the legendary three: Juan Atkins, Derrick May (9-11pm Sunday, Movement Torino Stage), and Kevin Saunderson and the "newer" wave of the electronic dance music revolution, Stacey Pullen and Claude von Stroke.

A distinguishing trait of Detroit techno is the use of analog synthesizers and early drum machines, particularly the Roland TR-909, or, in later releases, the use of digital emulation to create the characteristic sounds of those machines. This year's MOVEMENT, or DEMF for those of you pre-2003, marks the 10th anniversary of Detroit's Electronic Music Festival. Artists from around the world including Plastikman, Booka Shade and John Acquaviva are in confirmed attendance, among many of the latest and greatest Detroit-bred DJs like John Johr, and some of my favorites, Kenneth Thomas and Jenny LaFemme.

JL gave MCB her piece on what it is to be not only a Detroit DJ with global ties, but what a the meaning of this music in the city of Detroit really is.

"This is probably the biggest dream come true for any dj that is from Detroit... no matter how much I travel and play other places ... MOVEMENT is the most special one you can play ... it's here in Detroit... it's a beautiful celebration of music and our city that I love so much... I have been to every single one of the festivals and still remember the first one as one of the most special moments that game me goosebumps as people embraced the culture of the music that has influenced people all over the world....as far as my set this perhaps has been the biggest challenge that I have faced as a performer ... I have to try to fit in everything I have to say and feel in 90 min ... if you know me you know that i play different genres of electronic music... so this weekend will be filled with after parties that will display especially that on Saturday Morning we are doing "Girls On Top" @ Eros Lounge showcasing female talent from all over the world I will be dropping a sexy afterhours set there ... Sunday I will go from playing with Ron Trent at Bookie's to playing latenight Techno @ Metroplex 25 event... and Monday on Stage will be the culmination of it all that comes together ... hopefully I will not get too emotional about it ... I am a girl afterall :) I am also very excited by all my global friends visiting me this weekend from Russia to Mexico to Japan they will all be here and i am proud to host them at our event...we will also be shooting a TV program for Russian Entertainment Chanel cover the festival in depthas well as i am excited to promo out my house track that will soon be released"

I recently asked KT to give us some insight into his set for this weekend and his perspective on the current state of EDM.

"For my festival set I am going to lean a bit more towards what the DEMF is about in my set. Expect to hear a lot of tech-house, techy edged progressive and even alittle techno. I wont be playing anything that I dont normally carry with me but I just wont be veering into much or trancey stuff for my actually festival set. Although, fans can still expect to hear an emotionally edge set with lots of energy.

I will however open my set back to the more progressive and maybe even trancier sounds at the Exodus afterparty later that night in Greektown.

Thats actually the beauty of dance music right now. There is such a wide variety of music these days that good djs are pulling from all genres to form a style and set that is 100% their own. You will hear
Richie Hawtin play records that Oakenfold is playing yet the two djs will play and place those same records differently to create a completely new energy and vibe with that record. Its not much less about the "genre" of any one record but more about the vibe and energy of a djs whole set that truly defines them.

And bottomline is, we are still djs, our job is to play the perfect set for that time, place, vibe and crowd, all within our own respective sounds. Zeroing in on that perfect energy and journey for that moment in time is what its all about. Its a piece of improve art that we all share in simultaneously."

Check out Kenneth Thomas Saturday from 5-6:30 on the Movement Torino Stage and Jenny Lafemme Monday from 3:30-5 on the Made In Detroit Stage.

KT and JL will join over 100 other artists along with us here at MCB in Hart Plaza this weekend because MCB IS DETROIT TECHNO!

The first outing by The Dead Weather (Horehound) received quite a bit of critical acclaim. In my opinion, the record was largely hit or miss with only a few standout songs. The overall consensus, in my circle, that it received so much accolade was only because of the band's members. Yep it was another all-star lineup put together by the man who invented everything, Jack White. Still, I found myself excited at the prospect of a follow up LP. I liked the overall feel they were going for: a gothy bluesy and overall dirty swagger of a sound. Sea of Cowards is a tremendous follow up effort. It's an album that I haven't been able to stop listening to since I first torrented it. SOC takes a bit to get going but I find myself pleasently wating for the middle of the record. With I'm Mad, the sound really takes shape and falls into this Captain Beefheart-esque rhythm with Mosshart's wailing vocals over top. Die By The Drop follows suit with a 4/4 march bass beat with a disonant piano filling in on the 1/8ths trading of vocals between Mosshart and White. This is a great album for cruising in this hot hot summer weather and even better for driving with the windows down at nightime. I suggest getting it on the 2-tone Third Man Records vinyl as there is a special treat:

I believe you can only get the 2-tones via ebay or at the Third Man Record store in Nashville. However, if you like to buy shit on the internet like I do, you can purchase Sea Of Cowards in just about every format at theThird Man Records Site

MCB peeps use EARLOVE exclusively

Here is what some of them had to say

Fact is, I've never used earplugs before. Never. I mean, sure, I'vetried them now and then, usually as a last resort, and usually onlyfor a minute before I get so disgusted by not being able to HEARanything that I fling them across the room. I've learned to make dowith smiling and pretending I know what people are saying when theytalk to me at shows. When Kirk gave me the Earloves, we were in astupidly over-amplified small space, so I had to try them. Thedifference was huge. I'm used to wearing in-ear earphones, and I'mused to them not fitting very well. The Earloves fit my weird littleears just right, comfortably, and miraculously, I could actuallyunderstand what people were saying when they tried to talk to me. Thelittle case is in my bag full-time now, ready to show off to all thosefoam-rubber-wearing suckers.

I used mine the other night at band practice and they worked great, took a little getting used to having something in my ears (still nothing between them) but the music made it through and I didn't have any ringing or anything after. these were -16dB, talking to a few people the -20dB would be best, I plan on bringing them to all my practices as well as MCB concerts i shoot, the little carrying case is perfect and fits in my pocketthe other night i covered Marco Polio and the New Vaccines and then live from Japan, the punk band Polysics, needless to say both bands pushed the limits on the dB level and quite honestly i dont know how anyone there could of heard anything afterwards, my ears were well protected with some EARLOVE and at one point i took one of them out just to see what it was like...that lasted about 1 second as i was quick to put it back in! thanks for saving my ears and in 40 years from now when i can still hear

yeaAAAay EarLove!!

"As a concert photographer, I spend a lot of time next to a stage with large stacks of speakers shaking the fillings out of my teeth. Earlove earbuds are by far the best ear protection I've ever used. Very comfortable and a perfect fit, they get the job done."

"I have been using Earlove to avoid abusing my earsdrums for a few years now...
looking forward to picking up a pair at Movement 2010 as my preferred hearing protection.

"My editor failed to get me a pair of Earlove prior to shooting Gogol Bordello last month and my hearing is just returning to normal after stuffing 2 ciggie butts in my ears. I have since been enjoying shooting from the pits with pleasure using Earlove every show and going home without the ringing in my ears.
These bad boys are comfortable too!!

As earplugs go these ones are OK...they seem to fit a bit better than most but I can't stand earplugs anyway so if because I have to wear something EARLOVE is what I use. Plus I do not lose them because they come on this funky neck band and have a carry case as well.

It's all most here!!! "Movement 2010 Preview"

I am very excited to see 3 performances by artists I have gotten to know and love in the last few years and to see that they are playing one of the biggest and best music festivals in the states that happens to take place in my home town is pretty dope!

The best thing about all this is that these 3 projects play on Sunday and are all on the Red Bull Stage which is looking like the stage to be at!

Oh boy do I love me some RED BULL!!
