Book Reviews of Positive Creations; The Visionary Art of Chris Dyer and Newbrow; 50 Contemporary Artists

"Snazzy is as Snazzy Does!"

Newbrow; 50 Contemporary Artists documents 50 prominent artists in the Newbrow art movement. Newbrow art stylistically fuses pop art with surrealism. Over 180 images of art make this an exciting book for the art lover and art novice.  The artists are of American, German, and Australian descent.   Politically toned art, funny ironic art,  stenciled and vibrant street art, illustrative art comprise some of the styles in this collection. Each artist has nearly two pages of color imagery, and a paragraph detailing their influences and other biographical information. I particularly enjoyed Joka's, Walt Hall's, and Casey Weldon's art. Shane Pomajambo complied and wrote this art book. Shane is the CEO and Creative Director at Art Whino Gallery in Washington DC. He is obviously very committed to exhibiting national and international artists. This book is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in contemporary art.
Positive Creations; The Visionary Art of Chris Dyers is written by and complied by Chris Dyers. This is a compilation of Chris Dyer's works from 1979 to 2010. His early childhood skateboarding adventures sparked his keen interest in art. Dyers is a mellow meditative type and his work is psychedelic and visionary in nature. Dyer's spirited personality is evident in this book. He writes that art is his great calling and he is passionate about nature as well. He is a Peruvian artist who lives in Canada and due to a lot of time spent traveling Dyer is extremely worldly. His lessons and inspirations learned through traveling are apparent in his work. Chris is an extremely prolific and multifaceted artist! His collection includes paintings, sculptures, sketches, skateboard graphics, murals, and street art. All of his work is extremely colorful and bursting with positive energy. This book 's title is utterly perfect. This collection is highly recommended for anyone interested in contemporary art, street art, psychedelic art, and dynamic and unusual life stories.

Book Review of Angel by Laura Lee/ Itineris Press Books

Angel by Laura Lee is about a minster Paul Tobit who lost his wife to cancer. Paul's outlook and perception of life changes. He no longer wants to be a minister. Instead he becomes a tour bus driver. He reminisces that his favorite part of his old vocation was the funerals. The oddities of Paul's character are enjoyable. He is very much taken with men now as well. Various quotes and interesting facts about religion and biology accent each chapter.
The subject matter is definitely more in the public eye than 10 years go.  I was looking forward to reading this book but found the book to be a bit clumsy. I think it could use some editing. Its not a bad book it just needs some fine tuning. Some humorous lines sparkled like, "The ocean is sexier than corn."  Visit www.itinerisbooks.com for more information.

STIRLING’S ROCK N' ROLL BIRTHDAY PARTY!

Some of Detroit's finest rockers are getting together to celebrate local music/club promoter/rock aficionado Stirlings’ birthday. Stirling has been the driving force behind many area nightclubs throughout the years. He first started hosting modern dance parties in the '80s at the legendary dance clubs Todd's, The Leidernacht (now the City Club), The Majestic Theatre and The Warehouse. He later moved on to promote live music at The Sardine Bar, 313.jac/Jacoby's, and the park stage at Cityfest. He continues to be a strong advocate of Detroit talent by introducing new up and coming artists to local audiences. The annual party is one event that will showcase some stellar Detroit performers.

This promises to be a great night of local music. Performing will be some of Stirling's favorites. New local rockers Jimmy Ohio & The Ultimate Lovers will headline the night, which will also feature a set by Olympus Mons, performances by songstress Audra Kubat,  a short solo set by Leah Diehl of Lightning Love, songwriter John Bardy, and a special acoustic performance by Margaret Dollrod.

The rock n' roll party is on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012; doors at 9pm and showtime is at 9:30pm at The Corktown Tavern located at 1716 Michigan Avenue in Detroit, 48216. 313-964-5103. www.corktowntavern.com $6 cover charge and 21 and over are welcome.

About Project Trio

Project Trio performs to enthusiastic audiences of all ages in concert halls, clubs, and classrooms around the world. Acclaim for the Trio and its members runs the gamut from Downbeat Magazine, which praises PROJECT Trio as “packed with musicianship, joy, and surprise” to the New York Times, calling beatboxing flutist Greg Pattillo “the best in the world at what he does.” The Wall Street Journal hails the group’s “wide appeal, subversive humor and first-rate playing.”

The Trio, now in its sixth year, was forged out of a collective love of performing high energy, top quality music to diverse audiences. They are drawing new audiences to classical music and reinvigorating existing fans of chamber music through their innovative performances, recordings, and their YouTube channel, which has over 71 million views and 78,000 subscribers, making PROJECT Trio one of the most watched instrumental ensembles on the Internet. The Trio, which performs over 70 concerts a year, plays to fans of all ages in venues around the world including Carnegie Hall, where they made their debut in 2010. In addition to their extensive performing schedule, the Trio is dedicated to arts education, inspiring a whole new generation of concert going music lovers.

Highlights of the Trio’s 2012-13 season include concerts with the Charlotte, Detroit, Milwaukee, and New Jersey Symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Britt Festival, and the opening concerts of the Chicago Sinfonietta. The Trio will perform and lead masterclasses in schools, universities, festivals and other venues throughout the US, including New York, New Hampshire, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, Oregon, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. PROJECT Trio was selected by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with American Voices, as one of the ensembles for their 2012-2013 season of American Music Abroad. Chosen for their musical excellence and educational capability, they will tour throughout the former Soviet Union to present original American music through public concerts, master classes, workshops, jam sessions with local musicians and media outreach. Other international engagements include a second tour of Germany in addition to a performance with the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic this fall.

In 2012, the Trio gave their first concert as Family Concert Artists in Residence with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as part of a three-year residency. Other performances last season included the Saint Louis Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, and tours to France, Germany, Austria and Canada. The Trio has also toured Australia and Hong Kong.

PROJECT Trio’s discography includes five recordings and a DVD, PROJECT Trio: Live In Concert, all on the Trio’s own record label, Harmonyville Records. This fall PROJECT Trio released their fifth album When Will Then Be Now, which debuted at the top of both the Billboard classical and jazz charts. Their catalogspanning Random Roads Collection was released last spring on Tummy Touch Records and also immediately rose to the top of Billboard's Canadian and US classical and jazz charts. Like all of the other PROJECT Trio’s recordings, both soared to the top of the iTunes charts upon their release. Their disc Project Trio was acclaimed by Jazz Review as “a glorious celebration of the music of our time.” This disc builds on the sound that is at the foundation of the group’s success, with heavy hitting originals such as Dr. Nick and Fast and reinterpretations of Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns and Roses and Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo a la Turk. Their debut CD, Winter in June showcases the versatility of PROJECT Trio with 12 original compositions from
classical to jazz and hip-hop to experimental acoustic sounds. Their follow up disc Brooklyn collects well known staples from their live show, with covers and originals and even complete overhauls from the likes of Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, Theolonius Monk, JS Bach and Tchaikovsky, along with their own Brooklyn Suite, a collection of tone poems from the world they are surrounded by in the city of Brooklyn.

After meeting at the Cleveland Institute of Music, they quickly realized that there was no repertoire written for the unique combination of bass, flute and cello. This forced the members to compose and arrange their own music, which they publish on their Harmonyville label. Original compositions by the trio are influenced by the sounds of jazz, hip-hop, beatbox and rock. Their music can be heard in Nike and Smart Car commercials. Last year, the National Flute Association commissioned Pattillo to write “Three Beats for Beatbox Flute.” Greg Pattillo recently demonstrated his beatbox style for Jay Leno and performed with the Tonight Show orchestra. Dedicated to engaging today’s younger audiences, PROJECT Trio has performed and led workshops for over 100,000 students on three continents, including over 35 states in the US. PROJECT Trio is instantly recognizable to students of all ages as a result of their YouTube following and appearances on popular TV shows on Nickelodeon and MTV. Their educational programs are adapted to meet the National Standards for
Music Education, with specialized curricula for age groups from elementary students through college. They held their first summer camp at the Bay View Music Festival in Michigan this summer. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Pattillo, Stephenson, and Seymour founded PROJECT Trio in Boulder, Colorado in the summer of 2005. The group initially came up with the idea to do one week “projects” in different cities around the US, with each project including education/community outreach events and concerts of classical works and their own music. The Trio got its big break in 2006 when Greg Pattillo’s Beatbox Flute video went viral on YouTube, receiving millions of views in its first week. Reaching out to audiences of all ages through the Internet, live performances, and recordings, PROJECT Trio has since become one of the world’s most championed and exciting instrumental ensembles. Show Preview: Church of Bass Tour, The Blind Pig, Sunday, Dec. 2nd

Bass heavy and next level grooves are in session when the powerhouse trio of ill.Gates, Stephan Jacobs and Jay Fay hit up the Blind Pig on Dec. 2nd for the Church of Bass Tour where you can expect some of the  deepest and hardest sounds to be delivered this year.

Ill.Gates is a highly skilled heavy bass veteran and certifiable superstar. The Toronto-born and San Francisco-based producer recently the crowds at Burning Man, and with a fresh release coming from Muti Music, and the free release of his ENTIRE back catalog forthcoming, only legendary levels of success appear to be in his bright future.  With a special 3D projection mapping stage show and PK subs being brought in for sound, ill.Gates' headlining sets promise to be exalted moments in the Church of Bass.

Los Angeles based dance floor troublemaker Stephan Jacobs has his debut album dropping two weeks before kicking on the road, and brings a brilliantly sequenced live show and a desire to take a crowd on what he terms "a musical journey." A steady stream of remixes, including popular and powerful takes on the work of Benny Benassi and Skrillex, Ellie Goulding, Die Antwoord and an endless plethora more have positioned him as being a rising sensation with a growing fanbase.

Jay Fay isn't old enough to drink on his first national tour dates, but he's talented enough to blow your mind. The ex-drummer came on strong with the mid-tempo global bass moombahton vibes on tracks like "Oops." This has led to the DJ/producer's growing list of early achievements to include being voted as the top DJ in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, as well as having co-signs from the likes of progressive electro banger crafters of the moment Diplo, Dillon Francis and Tittsworth. Equally as gifted in slowing down as he is speeding up the bass, he brings a unique vibe and exciting new sounds to the Church of Bass Tour.

Here's a mix-tape of what the show has to offer -

The Balconies open up for Big Sugar

The Loop Windsor

Ottawa's own trio The Balconies are currently on tour opening up for Big Sugar.
Last weekend the band played at The Loop in Windsor.  They had the crowd up on their feet dancing with enthusiasm as the lead singer Jacquie belted out some seriously strong vocals. The Balconies music is mainly “pop rock” and they play it loud and their stage presence is extremely energetic.

There’s nothing better than watching a chick rock out on stage playing lead guitar, taking on the lead vocals and having a blast while doing so.

Be sure to check out their website for up and coming shows. This band is a must see!

Small Fires, the long awaited album from Bay Area-based band The Stone Foxes, will be

This holiday season, Everything Is Terrible!, the world famous psychedelic soldiers of found footage, return with another epic masterpiece! Over the last 5 years EIT! has built upon their classic Holiday Special, each year creating a more abominable video collage of everyone’s least favorite time of the year! A millennium's worth of VHS memories of misplaced sentimentalities, fist fights over toys for tots, erotic Santas, Nazi elves, and an endless parade of singing kids will surely destroy us all! Will this holiday season be our last? Will our Maya brothers and sisters of so many moons ago be correct in their prediction of doom? After all the dust settles, and our world as we know it is no more, will we have learned the true meaning of the season? There is only one way to find the answers that we seek! Watch one more crappy holiday special!
This holiday season Everything Is Terrible! will be served on ice!
As always, EIT! will appear live to present the evening’s festivities in all of their fur-covered glory! This time they promise to convert every stage into the tackiest winter wonderland imaginable with all the trimmings; puppets, sing-a-longs, candy, fake snow, and a visit from the big man himself! The word ‘miraculous’ falls short to describe the happenings of this Cataclysmic Transformation!
