Show Review: Hellyeah @ The Fillmore Detroit, MI. 6/19/2012

Take two parts Mudvayne, two parts Damageplan, one part Nothingface, a healthy dash of whiskey, and you've got a recipe for an ass kicking night of pure metal as it could ever be played. Hellyeah came stampeding in to Detroit last week in support of their new album "Band of Brothers" that takes the veteran super-group's masterful expertise to the next level in their ongoing rise in the metal ranks. The crowd was clearly anxious for them to take the stage, the tension and testosterone simmering in the air like the calm before one of those summer thunderstorms that comes rolling across the lake on a hot, windless evening.

Taking the stage, the band wastes no time in ripping apart the ears of the rabid fans, firing off the first salvo with "You Wouldn't Know" from their self-titled first album. Chad Gray snarls his way across the stage glaring at the crowd, backed by guitarists Greg Tribbett and Tom Maxwell, with Bob Zilla on bass and drum metal pioneer Vinnie Paul. The songs come fast and furious, keeping the pace of the pit flowing, with "Cowboy Way" and "Stampede" leading up to their newest songs "Band of Brothers" and "War In Me". They could have played the metal version of "Mary Had A Little Lamb (But We Ate It)" and the bodies wouldn't have stopped flying through the air for one second.

"Band of Brothers" is set for worldwide release on July 17.  The album, the band’s first effort for their new label home, Eleven Seven Music, was recorded in Dallas at drummer Vinnie Paul’s home studio, VP’s Upstairs Studio, and was produced by the band and Jeremy Parker (Godsmack, Evanessence), who also served as engineer.
