Patrick Krief @PJ's Lager House

Patrick Krief
w/DaVila, and Grind Scheme
Friday, March 1st, at PJ's Lager House
$6, 9PM

For Patrick Krief the existence of Hundred Thousand Pieces is nothing short of miraculous.

It’s a culmination of a journey that began at the knee of his musically inclined uncle — where a young Patrick scratched at the six strings his older self would master; an expedition that truly took flight when, filtered through the songbooks of Messers McCartney, Lennon, Harrison and Hendrix, the 13-year-old guitar prodigy snuck into bars around his native Montreal, jamming with their house bands and one that continues to mature with every face-melting flurry the virtuoso burns into the blown minds of audiences the world over.

Within the album’s songwriting, keen listeners can hear the triumphs and scars accumulated though nearly 8 years spent on the road with orchestral indie-rock innovators The Dears – a duty began as a short 5 week tour and continues to this day – as well as his own ex-musical powerhouse Black Diamond Bay.

Captured in its sparse beautifully heartbreaking, cinematic arrangements, one can hear the anguish of a heart left broken, beating its last tortured beats for the listener, exposing Patrick Krief’s soul, unencumbered.

Produced and performed almost entirely by the man himself (Drums, Piano, Keys, Bass, Guitar, Percussion and Vocals), Hundred Thousand Pieces is an album that demands repeated listens to be understood.

With Hundred Thousand Pieces, Patrick Krief presents the listener with his life up to the point of completion; a miraculous gift not to be denied.

FERNDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY HOSTS BOOK INSPIRED ART EXHIBITION

A new art exhibition at the Ferndale Public Library celebrates literature’s ability to inspire with dazzling depictions and vivid visions of spellbound readers, and book covers real or re-imagined. “For the Love of Reading,” running from Saturday, March 2 – Sunday, April 21, is held in concurrence with “Ferndale Reads” and “The Day of Books and Roses.”

An Artists’ Reception will be held at the library on Friday, March 8, 7 - 9pm (live music by local singer/songwriter and signed author Josh Malerman).

Books elevate our ideas, they spark the imagination and they can transport us to other worlds. “For The Love of Reading,” the third proper exhibition curated by Ferndale Library’s Arts & Exhibitions Committee, explores the rewarding relationship of reader to tome and the timeless stories carried in their pages, from centuries’ old epics like Beowulf to recent bestsellers like Little Bee.

In a special nod to how formative a good book can be upon a young, inquiring mind: A special display of works by Ferndale High School Students will be in the Corridor Gallery and works by Ferndale Middle School students will be displayed in the Kids Corner.

Artwork will be in a variety of mediums (oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings), also featuring photographs and even an elaborately altered book. Contributors range from first time exhibitors to award winning artists: Nicole Burroughs, Kia Ix-chel Arriaga, Barbara Campagna, Julie Craigo, Ben DeFever, Paul Erlandson, Diane Irby, Rachel Joanisse, B.P. LeGault, Peggy Kerwin, Rick Lieder, Marco Mancinelli, Marija Makeska, Zachary McInchak, Juana Moore, Sarah Previch, Jerry Shirts, Justin Tumey and Jayde Williams.

”Ferndale Reads” is the library’s annual community reading event propping group-reading’s valuable impact of elevating the experience of a book. Copies of this year’s selection, Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, are given away free to participants, with a schedule of special literary-themed events hosted around town.

“The Day of Books and Roses” is a library-hosted fundraising celebration inspired by “La Diada de Sant Jordi” (Saint George’s Day) on April 21st. The event features Spanish inspired foods, wine, and other treats. Michigan Authors will be reading from their work and selling their books. Friends of the Ferndale Library will use the funds raised to support FPL’s programming and events.

The Committee will not be involved in the sale of any artwork in the exhibition beyond providing interested buyers with the artist's provided contact information.

"Mounting an exhibition of art inspired by books, and linked to a series of city-wide literary events is a perfect example of how the library can contribute to the cultural life of the Ferndale community," says Patrick Dengate President, Ferndale Public Library Board of Trustees and Chaiman of the Arts and Exhibitions Committee.

Tickets for RODRIGUEZ at the Masonic Temple Go On Sale Tomorrow

Detroit Legend Rodriguez to play at Masonic Temple Theater.
Saturday, May 18th, 2013 (Same day as a derby bout).
8pm Doors. Tickets $35/ $45
Presented by the Crofoot Ballroom.

Sixto Rodriguez, acclaimed singer/songwriter and subject of the Oscar winning “Searching for Sugarman” returns to Detroit with his first post-Oscar show. He will take the stage at Detroit's famed Masonic Temple Theater, which has hosted Jimi Hendrix, the Who, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Neil Young, the White Stripes, and more.

With the Oscar for “Searching for Sugar Man” as Best Documentary film, Rodriguez has experienced an explosion of interest. It's not surprising that he's now being booked at the Masonic Temple Theater. It's a big upgrade from when he played he Crofoot Ballroom just this last November (even though it sold out), and an astronomical difference from when he was playing a VFW Hall back in 2009. An appearance at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, and several high profile TV appearances, including 60 Minutes, Late Show with David Letterman, a CNN feature story, and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, have reinforced Rodriguez status as cult icon.

Sixto's story is a fairy tale come true, his album is one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in color and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. The album is Cold Fact, and what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution.

Tickets are $45 for Main Floor; $35 for Balcony, and go on sale Friday at 10 am at TicketMaster outlets.

UPCOMING: "Ernie" by Mitch Albom PLUS Tigers Tix Bonus

Ernie
A Play by Mitch Albom
June 6 - July 7, 2013
Tix Go On Sale Friday, March 1 at 10 A.M.

Mitch Albom announced that Ernie will once again return to the City Theatre, located inside of Hockeytown Café and just one block from Comerica Park, to offer fans a third season to remember "The Voice of Summer" starting Thursday, June 6. Presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, the two-man play, dedicated to the late and beloved Hall of Fame Detroit Tiger announcer, Ernie Harwell, will also welcome back local stage favorites Will Young, as the iconic Harwell, and TJ Corbett in the role of "The Boy."

Ernie’s third season will again feature the doubleheader experience with convenient showtimes to provide fans the ability to watch the play and catch a Tigers game in the same day. To take advantage of the "doubleheader," patrons can purchase their Ernie show tickets online at OlympiaEntertainment.com, Ticketmaster.com or the Fox Theatre Box Office. At that time, a redemption code will be given for use on Tigers.com or at the Comerica Park Box Office to receive a $5 savings on select seating and at select regular season home games. Game tickets will only be available for pick-up at the Comerica Park Box Office and patrons must present their Ernie show ticket stub.

Albom, who was asked by Harwell if he'd consider a play about the announcer's life, began writing the script after Ernie’s passing in May of 2010. The two-actor play debuted in April 2011 to coincide with the Tigers baseball season and has since become the highest-attended show in the history of the City Theatre; with more than 35,000 patrons in two seasons.

Ernie is set on Harwell’s last night at Comerica Park in September of 2009, prior to his moving thank you speech to his adopted and beloved city of Detroit. Just before he walks onto the grassy field, he encounters an unusual boy who is eager to know all about him, coaxing Harwell into giving one final broadcast – the "broadcast of his life."

The play features classic footage from historic baseball moments, supplied courtesy of Major League Baseball, and boasts many unmistakable Harwell calls. Tigers fans will get a glimpse of the time that Ernie met the Great Bambino and Ty Cobb. They’ll witness how he "recreated" games in his early days, and what was behind his broadcasts of the Tigers’ 1968 and 1984 World Series.

"I'm intrigued by conjoined twins. What would it be like to never truly be alone? Would you share the same likes/dislikes? What if you're good, but your other half is evil? Is there a way to form separate identities? If you became a zombie, would you eat all your friends first before turning on your other half? I wanted to show all that, but - you know, with rabbits."  - Kill Taupe

SHOW REVIEW & PHOTOS: Electric Six in Houston TX by MCB old schooler Riaz Khan

So if you have paid much attention to MCB over the years there is no doubt you came across many a photo set from our old time buddy Riaz Khan who moved from Detroit to Houston a few years ago

Riaz covered hundreds of shows for MCB and has been popping back in from time to time with photo sets of  Detroit based bands touring through Houston including this little gem of  Electric Six
who played Fitzgerald's on 2/22

Electric Six @ Fitzgerald’s, Houston – 2/22

I first got into concert photography in 2008 as a photographer for the MOTORCITYBLOG.

I got to see Electric Six in 2009 at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor on assignment.  That was an awesome night. The band was incredible and place was packed with a hardcore following, both the young and the slightly less young.

A few short years later, I left Detroit and started freelancing as a photographer in Houston, Texas. I found out a couple of months ago that Electric Six were about to go on tour and they were going to make a pit stop in Houston.  I figured this was a great opportunity to see the band again and give a little back to MCB, where I got my first few breaks as a photographer.

The band played to a really diverse crowd at the Fitzgerald’s last Friday.  Their sets were slick and the fans chimed in with the chorus lines.  The audience was totally hooked and the lack of space wasn’t a deterrent to crowd surfers and mosh-pitters at all.

The Fitzgerald’s has a rich history. Like the Blind Pig, this venue became a live music hotspot in the seventies and has stood the test of time as a local favorite over the several decades that have followed.  Right now, Fitzgerald’s is partially owned and run by the Houston Free Press.  From a performers’ point of view, local acts like Brandon West and The Suffers really like the acoustics and the crowd-factor of this space.

There are a couple of subtle differences between the two venues though.  The Blind Pig has had wider appeal with out-of-state bands and audiences. Allegedly it was Kurt Cobain’s favorite venue to play at. Critics often claim that Detroit has a handful of venues that have been important to the careers of many international acts and that The Blind Pig has always been one of them. This has had a lot to do with the fact that Detroit has been creating and maintaining a cultural niche for itself with punk, rock, funk and electronic genres since forever. Despite the persistently crumbling economy, Detroit still has that going for itself in spades.

Houston on the other hand is kind of different. Its economy has been booming courtesy of the Oil & Gas and Health industries but it hasn’t been a major player on the cultural map. This is about to change though. The disposable income in this town is visible by the truckloads and there is a lot of local talent that is diverse and young. Also it’s only a matter of time that the trickle-down effect from Austin’s now-thriving indie scene manifests itself in Houston.

More Detroit bands need to come down to Houston!

Saturday Night at the Magic Stick

BOB MOULD

With Jason Narducy and Jon Wurster

Visiting Detroit's Magic Stick this Saturday having just played a SOLD OUT show in Toronto the night before.
I heard this band for the first time on Feel The Spin, a radio show that airs on Sirius XM radio, and is hosted by Larry Flick, and fell in love with their sound. They make music that rocks with energy, melody and great musicianship.
Bob is known for his work as guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. Their new album that is getting well deserved air play is Silver Age.
Also, recommend the Magic Stick in Midtown Detroit for dinner and drinks before the show at the wonderful Majestic Cafe ( in the same building as the Magic Stick ) . Food and staff are great. Tickets for the show are $25.

Show Review: Willy Moon @ The Shelter wsg/The Infatuations

Walking in to The Shelter this past Monday night, I really had no idea what to expect from the show I was about to cover. I honestly hadn't heard of Willy Moon until a few days before the show and had scant time to scope out the history behind this cool cat. Descending in to the catacombic basement of Saint Andrews Hall and checking out the ample crowd that had congregated for the evening's performance, I quickly came to realize that this was going to be something unique to capture if all these people had brought themselves down here on a Monday night to see this show. Willy Moon and his entourage arrived shortly before stage time, fresh off a few strings of bowling at the Garden Bowl, yet still looking cool as a cat in the shade on a hot summer day without a care in the world, espousing a cool demeanor that would have put him right at home in the Rat Pack of yesterday. Taking the stage shortly after 9pm, this dapper, distinguishably dressed gentleman proceeded to ignite the crowd while channeling the likes of Elvis and Sinatra, Iggy Pop and The Ramones, and every other sort of cool kitchen sink you could toss in there. Watching this fellow explode on stage, transformed from the quiet and well spoken young man I had just interviewed a half hour before was an experience that truly captivated me. With the crowd fully engaged, Willy and his band held court through their hour long set with a relentless, throttle set to 11, balls to the wall in your face rock and roll that left everyone in the venue chanting for more.

To fire up the crowd for the evening was Detroit's very own The Infatuations, a hard working band that prides itself on it's Motown roots, funky hooks, danceable beats, and featuring one of the best undiscovered singers in the Detroit area, Caleb Gutierrez. The Infatuations have steadily been working and wowing crowds all around the Midwest with their fresh take on a rejuvenated Motown sound. Christian Draheim and Marco Lowe started the band as an acoustic cover duo but soon realized that they had something special going on with the original material they had been working on and began recruiting other local musicians to help flesh out the sound. The current line up consists of Christian Draheim, Caleb Gutierrez, Chris Polite, The Wolf, Robert Myers and Nick Behnan. You may have seen them captivate the crowds at Detroit River Days or Arts, Beats and Eats in 2012 where they stopped people in their tracks lost in the moment of sound that poured forth from the stage they occupied. You can catch them at a few gigs this month including a free gig at the Motor City Casino Soundboard. Check 'em out, dig 'em, they are a band to watch grow in our fine city.

Show Review: Tom Keifer @ The Magic Bag Sunday 02/24/2013

Tom Keifer, best known as the singer/songwriter/guitarist of the Philadelphia-based blues-rock band CINDERELLA, made a stop at The Magic Bag in Ferndale on his first-ever solo tour on Sunday Feb 24, 2013. In between tour dates with CINDERELLA, Keifer is making a series of smaller, intimate club stops, behind his newly released and highly anticipated solo album, “The Way Life Goes”.  The new album is being touted as Country/Bluesy and the first single “The Flower Song” is an intimate Blues kicker that could likely be heard on Country Radio or on Rock Radio Stations. Keifer and his band played tunes from a collection of his 14 new songs on the Solo Album, as well as driving hard rock favorites from Cinderella’s Long Cold Winter Album, and even included an intimate, stripped-down, cover of the Beatles “Get By With A Little Help From My Friends”.

Wayne "The Train" Hancock

Last Tuesday was proof that real country is still alive! It was not that crap you hear on the radio, this was like a flashback to when Elvis and Johnny Cash ruled the airwaves. The show started off with Patrick Sweany  playing more of a bluesy show, it was just a man and his guitar talking about his problems. I loved this guy, with his raspy voice and catchy songs he put on a great show for just one man.

Wayne "The Train" Hancock took the stage with a bass player and a guitar player. Something awesome about this show was the bass player had an up right bass, out of all the shows I have been to that is the only time I have seen that. On top of that he had such an awesome attitude to his playing, you could tell he was loving what he was doing. A highlight of everyone's night was most likely his solos for sure. Wayne was just awesome! He sang about love, sex, drugs, fighting the law. Towards the end of the show Wayne took a break to go in the back to smoke, but the music did not stop there -- his band had to play until he returned. This show was a great time and a must-see if he comes back!

The wonderfully talented, gritty blues rockers that call themselves Vintage Trouble return to Detroit on March 10th at The Magic Stick as part of their headlining tour before heading over to Europe to continue opening support for The Who on the second leg of the Quadrophenia tour. Having played a highly successful and critically acclaimed opening spot on The Who tour last winter, they continue to amaze and astound audiences everywhere they go. A musical revival of sound that tugs at ones soul, bringing people out of their seats every night, Vintage Trouble is a solid bet for a great night of music, dancing and just plain fun. Currently in Providence, RI. today they gave up some time to speak with me over the phone and catch up on their incredible rise to the forefront of the musical scene around the world.

Wild At Heart

As much as I love movies, I still cannot get myself to watch the actual awards ceremony. Even Seth couldn’t push me over the edge. However, I am still very interested in the outcomes. t I though they did a good job, though I though either “Wreck-It Ralph” or “Frankenweenie” should have taken best animated film. “Brave” is beautifully animated but the storyline falters at times when the other 2 remain strong all the way through. The other category I thought didn’t go to the correct film was the live short category for “Curfew”. As much as I love the scene with the dancing at the bowling alley, the other 4 films were much stronger films in my opinion.

I was happy that Detroit was represented (esp after being named most depressed city along with Flint and Warren) by the documentary “Searching For Sugarman” which highlights the tremendous musical talent of Rodriquez. His working class folk music is right up there with Ochs or Dylan and better in some cases. I love his story and am glad to see his albums in the Billboard charts despite being many years too late. I saw Rodriquez at Rock-A-Billy’s a number of years ago and was impressed by his songwriting and his humble nature. It is cool talking about the film and being able to say I saw him and see fellow music fans eyes light up with envy. I’m hoping some venue here in Rochester will invite him out to play here. I’m also glad the Ann Arbor Folk Festival had him on the line-up this year. I hope he has success and he really represents what makes Detroit’s music scene the best in the world.

Anyway, here are a few concerts you can unwind with this week:
