ART OPENING: Twenty Years Against The Wall at Cass Cafe - RECEPTION: Saturday March 29 starting at 7 pm.

Detroit-centric Twenty Years Against The Wall Art Exhibit Opens At Cass Cafe

Cass Cafe announces its latest exhibit in the gallery. "Twenty Years Against  The Wall" a retrospective of sorts, that highlights artworks collected during the past twenty years by Cass Cafe's owners Chuck Roy and Diana May. The exhibition features the works of some of Detroit's most active and prominent artists of the past two decades. This exhibition kicks off a yearlong celebration of the bar / restaurant and gallery's twenty years being open on Cass Avenue in Detroit. Over that time, Cass Cafe has served as a meeting place for Detroit's creative class in what is now one of the most rapidly changing neighborhoods in the city. Throughout this time the community along north Cass and the surrounding blocks has been known for its open embrace for the alternative, sporting galleries and artist studios, Dally in the Alley, and an ever-evolving music scene and is influenced by surrounding cultural institutions and attractions. Cass Cafe is also well known for its gallery exhibitions, and is one of the most sought-after venues in town for emerging and established artists alike.

The exhibit opens officially with a reception on Saturday March 29 starting at 7 pm. The evening honors the artists who have made Detroit such a rich cultural center, and features live DJ sets by Daniel Kroha and Richie Wohlfeil, complimentary appetizers, and many of the artists in attendance. The reception is open to the public at no charge. A cash bar and full menu are available for purchase. This is the first event of what is planned to be an ongoing series of events and happenings that celebrate Detroit's diverse creative community through music and art, and marks the rebirth of the Cass Collective live music showcase.

The current exhibit includes paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture by many notable artists including Robert Sestok, Mary Fortuna, Gilda Snowden, Jerome Ferretti, Bradley Jones, Leni Sinclair, Gary Grimshaw, Mark Arminski, Gary Eleinko, Andrew Krieger, Kip Kowalski, Rick Vian, Paul Schwartz, Rebecca Cook and many, many more. Gallery curator Dave Roberts explains "I am really excited to be able to select works from this collection for this show because it really demonstrates the creative vision that has been endemic to the Cass Corridor neighborhood and Detroit as a whole."  Cass Cafe proprietor Chuck Roy adds "we conceived Cass Cafe as place to celebrate the arts and this neighborhood as part of that community. This show gives us chance to share artwork by artists who have made impact on us and in our community. It is also a way to mark this time and make our twenty years here tangible in a way that speaks about our community and the Cafe as a gathering place. We not only play our role of and satisfying the hunger and thirsts of people, we also play a role in sustaining cultural dialogue as well."

The exhibit is currently on view and remains on display through June 21, 2014. Additional events celebrating Cass Cafe's 20th year are being planned. Cass Cafe is open seven days a week, and is located at 4620 Cass Avenue in Detroit's Midtown.
