4/5/14

THE JULIE RUIN with SCREAMING FEMALES | Tuesday, 4/8 @ The Loving Touch | 8PM | $15 | 18+.

Let's suppose you have no idea who Kathleen Hanna is.

-The Julie Ruin has a new video for Goodnight, Goodbye off of their critically acclaimed debut LP- Run Fast. The entire album is stacked with sounds reminiscent of earlier times in alt/indie rock. Early to mid nineties punkish pop experimenting with boundary breaking synth and dance rock is how I hear it. There's a lot to hear with attention demanding vocals- sneering and shouting verses, downstroke grinding guitars, fuzzy on the low and laser-beam on the high synth parts- all over top a true rock bass guitar and drum rhythm.

Now back to Kathleen Hanna. If you're born Generation Y there should have been a section in your life manual about the riot grrrl manifesto. Associated with the third wave feminist movement it influenced a cultural stand up for women in music and art and life. Anything unsaid was said by Hanna and what she was a part of. Speaking truths and dishing "Fuck You's" exactly where they needed to go and in a state of immediacy. You can read the riot grrrl manifesto here: http://onewarart.org/riot_grrrl_manifesto.htm I would also recommend watching the biographical/ music documentary The Punk Singer by filmmaker Sini Anderson about Hanna.
