REVIEW: "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" Exhibit at the Henry Ford (Part 2 of 5)

In 2012 I found myself on at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland on assignment from Motorcityblog. The museum was massive and contained 6 floors of exhibits. A music lovers dream come true.

A music lover trough and through, I jumped at the chance to cover the "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" touring exhibit brought to you by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and having it's final U.S. touring stop at the Henry Ford in Dearborn. A large collection of over 250 pieces of memorabilia from 70 women in rock and roll history.

There is so much to cover in regards to the exhibit that I plan on releasing my "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" review in five parts over the next few weeks.

Before a song is recorded often the song is constructed via pen and paper with lyrics. If you love the power of song lyrics and the legacy of handwritten lyrics giving birth to some classic songs, than this exhibit has you covered.

Keeping your life organized as a rock star can be difficult at times. Many artists had their own appointment books to keep everything in check. This exhibit was lucky enough to have some of them in the collection.

THIS SATURDAY: LYDIA LUNCH/RETROVIRUS (Music and Lecture) at MOCAD in Detroit

Singer, Poet, Writer, Actress and  Spoken Word Artist LYDIA LUNCH is coming to Detroit This Saturday for a musical retrospect and a lecture.

Lydia Lunch RETROVIRUS is an all-star cast of sonic brutarians in a no-holds-barred survey of Lunch’s musical output, from 1977 to the present. Including music from Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8 Eyed Spy, Queen of Siam, 1313 and Shotgun Wedding. Lydia Lunch has spent decades trolling through the subterranean sick-home black & blues creating a schizophrenic musical legacy which loops from shrill No Wave to bludgeoning hard rock, from smoky jazz noir and illustrated word to macabre psychedelia. Lunch is joined in RETROVIRUS by guitarist Weasel Walter (The Flying Luttenbachers, Lake of Dracula), drummer Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore), and bassist Tim Dahl.

Preceding the concert, Lunch and Walter will present No Wave Now, a lecture that traces the cultural history of No Wave which Lunch is often considered a pioneer of.

Ryan Dillaha and The Miracle Men release a special 45 in honor of the late Michael Millman

This Friday at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, Ryan D. and the boys hit the stage in support of a very special 45 released by New Fortune Records. The record features recordings the band made before the passing of Michael Millman- the bass player and founding member of the Miracle Men.
Also on the bill is Dutch Pink, Oak Bones and John Freeman. $10 cover for 18 and up includes a digital download from each of the four acts.

If you don't mind me adding a personal note to this post, I must say its been difficult to look at this poster so often anticipating this show. In my journalistic duties at MCB I certainly haven't had to write on a subject that pulls at my heart strings so dramatically as Mikey Millman was a very close and dear friend- a friend I confided in every day for the better part of the short few years I knew him. He was a great listener and sincere in conversation. He was honest and sometimes humorously crass, a humanitarian and worldly. Mike not being much of a drinker, I laugh having the memory of the time I actually had some beers with him at New Way Bar- he burped something fierce from it. He left many devastated from his passing but it's closely followed with some memory to smile about so I'll consider that his gift of still being around.

As a fan of the Summer Pledge, it's sad to say this will be their final show. They leave us with a handful of releases- 2 full lengths You Are You and Vessels with a few 7" records. In 2011 Patrick Grant, a New York City-based composer/performer and Detroit native, created Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Guitars for the Make Music New York celebration of the first day of winter. The title of the project refers to the axial tilt of the Earth that brings about seasonal change as well as playing upon the word “axes” which is slang for one’s guitar or other musical instrument. Since then Tilted Axes has had a number of manifestations in NYC, one in Detroit in 2013 for the first day of spring, and now looks forward to European versions beginning in September.

What is Tilted Axes? It is a body of musical works that are performed as a procession by approximately 30 guitarists with portable mini-amps worn by each performer. They are accompanied by drums and percussion and are led by standard-bearers holding a banner. The ensemble, whether in NYC, Detroit, or Europe, is made up of local musicians, in this case, musicians from the greater Detroit area, who receive the music and improvisational structures that Grant creates in advance via MP3s and PDF files. They workshop and rehearse days prior to the event, customizing it and adapting it to the nature of the ensemble and to the requirements of the event and its featured performers. 

Tilted Axes has always been event specific, whether it was to celebrate the first days of winter or spring, the mayoral inauguration in NYC, or the opening of the performing season in Europe. 

For this year, the Detroit Historical Society (DHS) has asked Grant to bring the project back to Detroit to celebrate the city’s 313^th anniversary on July 19^th. Dubbed “Tilted Axes: Detroit (313),” the event is in three parts; the first starts at the Detroit Historical Museum, 5401 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI at 1:00pm. It consists of a procession through Midtown Detroit with stops at various locations (the DIA, the Science Museum, etc.). A detailed procession route is forthcoming via the project web page.

The second part begins when the procession returns to the Detroit Historical Museum. The players will perform outside in a circle within the museum’s Legends Plaza.

The third part consists of a procession within the museum and culminates in its auditorium. The events presented by the DHS will conclude at approximately 5:00pm.

As an added bonus to the day, beginning at 6:00pm, the musicians will be performing another procession at the entrance to Comerica Park before the Detroit Tigers game.

The Music: For this event, Grant will add to the current Tilted repertoire by introducing new variations on the Tilted Axes themes that reflect the musical history of Detroit. The stylistic slant of these pieces would follow this plan: 

1950s - Jazz/Blues

1960s - R&B/Motown

1970s - Rock/Proto-Punk

1980s - New Wave/Techno

1990s - Hip Hop/Hardcore

2000s - 21st Century ~ Synthesis

Each one of these styles represents a distinct contribution that Detroit has made to music in the last 60 years. The 21st century is left “open” because, musically speaking, the city is going through a period where all of these styles are being combined to create new genres. This is the present.
