Another great week at PJ's Lager House Detroit - Audra Kubat - Bill Grogan's Goat - Velveteen Rabbit - Mexican Knives/Frustrations

Holy autumn weather, Batman. Where'd summer go? With the flip of a switch, summer has left us. Michigan wears the cooler weather well, though, and we're here to help warm you up, too. We've got music every night of the week happening, from out-of-town Americana acts to our favorite local rockers who like to play loud. And our menu warms people up with the best of them. Try a hot soup or PJ's Detroit gumbo, savory roux-based gumbo with Andouille sausage & chicken served over rice with bread on the side.

Happy Hour Daily 2-6.  $2 Domestics. Come Early. Get Drinking.

Lots of great shows this week. Read on, music lovers.

AUDRA KUBAT, SHE KEEPS BEES, AND SHILPA RAY & HER HAPPY HOOKERS

AUDRA KUBAT- "Kubat is an iconoclastic songwriter: her methods of composition and articulation are unlike anybody else's on the scene…Million Year Old Sand is a rare recording; it exists in a vacuum as far as popular music is concerned, but it does so willingly, by articulating with grace and aplomb those hidden places that defy easy categorization, easy placement, or easy sentiment…This may appear to be a self-reflective album, but in reality, is an offering of stark and beautiful reality that possesses enough experience and aspiration to be shared, as well as felt."  --ALL MUSIC GUIDE

SHE KEEPS BEES- She Keeps Bees have self-recorded and released music made at home since 2006. Their debut album, Minisink Hotel, was described by NYC's Other Music as "the best album you've never heard." Nests, their second full-length, was admired by the Guardian as "sparse, soulful and defiantly retro." Their third LP, Dig On, was praised by the BBC as "an album of fire, spirit, and sweat."
ON THE INTERWEBS

SHILPA RAY & HER HAPPY HOOKERS- Shilpa Ray's forearms bulge with blood when she plays her harmonium. "I have strange musical injuries" she explains, referring to the blisters on her fingers. But none of that stops her from pounding on the accordion-like instrument, which reached the height of its popularity in 19th-century churches.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18- 9 P.M.- $5
HALF WAY TO ST. PADDY'S DAY w/ BILL GROGAN'S GOAT, BROTHERS CROWE, AND DEBAUCHEROUS EXTRAORDINAIRE

BILL GROGAN'S GOAT- Bill Grogan's Goat combines solid Detroit rock with traditional Celtic melodies to produce a truly unique sound, tightly combining traditional songs with reels, jigs, and hornpipes at a pace that will challenge the Lord of the Dance himself. Highland pipes, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, bouzouki, and penny whistle, accompanied by rock and roll bass, guitar, and drums, breathe new life into time-honored songs of love, war and whiskey.

BROTHERS CROWE- The band consists of two brothers, Derek (vocals/harmonica/mandolin) and Paul (guitars/vocals/piano). Brother Crowe's purpose, is honing in on an New Country/Indie Folk sound that still possesses a somewhat traditional Americana style. Paul, who along with his brother was influenced by his father's love of Folk music, is dubbed Brother Crowes' main songwriter. The duo works on music together, jamming out the skeletons of tunes until they're finished.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 19- 9 P.M.- $5
KRAKATOA, DAN MARISKA & THE BOYS CHOIR, CRASH BANDITS, VELVETEEN RABBIT, AND THE BAD MICS

KRAKATOA- Scrap metal, Detroit-style.

DAN MARISKA & THE BOYS CHOIR- On Dan Mariska's sophomore outing, Bummer Songs, the promising 22-year-old makes the leap to fully realized talent. With backing band the Boys Choir and veteran producer Knol Tate (ex-Askeleton), the album sounds triumphant even if Mariska's lyrical sentiments are anything but. "I should probably stay inside for the rest of my life/That seems to work all right," he sings. Still adept at channeling the sardonic spirit and skewed guitars of '90s college-rock, Mariska impresses most when he steps out into unfamiliar terrain, as on the heartfelt mid-tempo acoustic number "Company."
OFFICIALDOM

CRASH BANDITS- The Crash Bandits are a Rock trio based out of Minneapolis. In the last year and a half, the band has released two EPs and a full length, Better Off, produced by local veteran Knol Tate (Killsadie, Deleter, Dan Mariska). In 2014 the trio plan on releasing their EP, Closer, at the renowned 1st avenue/7th st. The Crash Bandits boast an expansive songwriting catalogue that harkens back to the late 70s roots of punk, tips its hat to the DIY hardcore scene of the 80s, and salutes the nostalgic pop punk of the late 90s and early 00s.

VELVETEEN RABBIT- Founded by Sandy C. Hopkins, Camilo Jantti and Jason Janusch, today Velveteen rabbit is a 2-6 piece band that loves to collaborate with other musicians. Velveteen Rabbit has built a vast body of intriguing music and has produced over 40 short independent films. In 2009 they were discovered through a series of their mini films by former entourage of the uk's madness, and co founder of white hart projects uk.

THE BAD MICS- That good ol' Detroit psych-garage sound.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20- 9 P.M.- $5
LANGUAGESTAIN, 3-WATT DEATH RAY, MUSCLEBABY, AND THE BUTTS

LANGUAGESTAIN- A musical project started out of necessity / hunger. Languagestain has also added members and amended our sound over the last year of existing. We play Chaos Rock and it's pretty rad. Come throw hats at us.

3-WATT DEATH RAY- If memory serves right, this band used to be called Anal Everything before they added more instruments and members. Now they just make super fresh Ska/Reggae/ and Pop-Punk. How can you be mad about that?

MUSCLEBABY- The Synth-Pop band your mommy warned you about. Being nice won't stop the Muslebably from spreading across your bones.
IN THE CLOUD

THE BUTTS- Do you guys remember that time you were all like "hey, I want to listen to hip-hop, but I only want to hear drums, trombone, and bass"? I don't, but The Butts heard your cry and answered with grooves that are beyond copacetic.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21- 9 P.M.- $6
DEAF WISH, FRUSTRATIONS, MEXICAN KNIVES, AND BROTHELS

DEAF WISH- This is a guitar band. For the ages. Deaf Wish embrace abrasive and primal elements to make a sound that is loud and unhinged, but sewn together with a sense of sincerity and emotional abandon. It is wild volume, the explosion of the torment and ill ease. Rarely does life vexation and desperation seem so heartfelt, and disconnectedly optimistic.

FRUSTRATIONS- A rock band that rocks. Seriously.

MEXICAN KNIVES- "Thankfully, the new music video for "Killer Snake" from Detroit garage rockers Mexican Knives has shown me that payphones and cell phones can still coexist peacefully in today's world, pee-free. And that despite falling on some hard times and going bankrupt, the city of Detroit is still cranking out top-notch rock 'n' roll."  --VICE

BROTHELS- Newer group featuring 3 of the guys from Growwing Pains.
